How do folks get their gear to FW???

I know this has been asked before, and answered, but for some reason myt search function isn't working on this computer. I was hoping to try tent camping at FW soon, and was wondering how those of you who come from a distance handle the transportation of tents and camping gear. It seems like a waste for me to drive from MA to FL, as I will only have a week off, and the price of gas is way too high to try it. So, do I ship? Bring on plane? What company? Any experiences in this out there???

I have flown and tent-camped before at Ft. Wilderness and it is most definitely possible.

Most airlines allow 2 50lb checked bags (check your airline website for maximum height/width/depth), then 1 carry-on bag (such as a rollerbag), and one personal item (such as a bookbag/computer bag).

Southwest allows 3 50lb checked bags.

As a solo person I bring the following:

10x10 tent
10x13 shelter
folding arm chair
air mattress
sheets/blanket/pillow (Electric Blanket in the winter)
Small Fan
Battery operated hanging lantern
Electric air mattress pump
ground cloth
disposable painters plastic to put under ground cloth (throw away at end of trip)
Laptop
Digital Camera/Docking Station
Alarm Clock
Cell Phone/Charger
Power Strip
40 ft Outdoor extension cord
3 days of clothing
Laundry Detergent
Dryer Sheets
Toiletries
Towel
Washcloth
RainGear
Shower Shoes

I pack it in a plastic locking footlocker and an extra large duffle bag (need the length for the chair) The lock is to lockup the laptop at the campsite, don't lock it for the flight. I also have the roller bag as a carryon and a bookbag to carry toiletries to the comfort station.

If I'm flying Southwest, instead of an air mattress, I can bring a collapsing air cot. (However flying and camping on Southwest was more trouble than the extra 50 lbs allowance). They had a "really" great airfare, so I had to try though.

I don't cook at Ft. Wilderness, there are too many good restaurants at WDW.

If you use Magical Express, try to fly with a "participating airline" and fly at a time when you can use "Resort Airline Checkin".

Also try to have someone drop you off/pick you up from your home airport.

The reason SW was not worth it for me was as follows:

Southwest is not in my home city, Southwest does not participate in "resort airline checkin"

So, I drove to the city where Southwest was, parked in remote parking.
Tipped the shuttle guy for helping me load 3 50lb bags in his shuttle
Tipped the skycap for helping me check 3 50lb bags at curbside
The bags were then delivered to my site by Magical Express, no problem there.
For the return:
Tipped the Ft. Wilderness guy for getting 3 50 lb bags back to Reception Outpost for storage.
Tipped the Magical Express driver for 3 50lb bags back to the airport
Tipped the skycap at MCO for helping me check 3 50lb bags at curbside
Tipped the skycap at Nashville for helping me move 3 50lb bags from baggage claim to the remote parking shuttle
Tipped the shuttle driver for helping me move 3 50lb bags from the shuttle to my car

If you fly a participating airline from an airport where someone can drop you off and also use resort airline checkin, you can avoid many of those tips to have folks help you lug your stuff.

If this sounds all too complicated, PM me, and I'll try to explain.

I hope I've been helpful.

Carol, maybe we should ask the mods to make your popular post a sticky at the top! Anyone brave enough to fly and tent (I don't like either!!) should have all the support possible.

Thank you so much, Carol. One step closer to giving this a try!

I am revising my above advice to say that Southwest is really the only airline where flying and tent camping is possible because they still allow two checked bags per person. Most other airlines now charge for checked luggage.

My husband and I flew from Buffalo out to the Grand Canyon via southwest for a weeklong camping trip a few years ago. This was back when southwest allowed 3 bags per person. It took some creative packing, but we also needed to take a lot of cold weather supplies since the weather at night was in the low 40's. We also had to eat at the Grand Canyon restaurants since taking our camp stove, etc. was not possible. It is certainly do-able.
We are heading out in 19 hours for a week of camping at Disney...it's a 20+ hour drive. Our van is packed to the brim, but we are bringing everything but the kitchen sink with us...oh wait, we are taking a kitchen sink!

I hope I'm wrong, but I'm bettn that fly/campn is gonna be much harder to do (if not dang near impossible), what with that moron diaper bomber.

I would also look into shipping directly to the campground so that you do not have to worry about lugging everything. I am looking into shipping directly even though I currently plan to drive and staying in a cabin. My sister has medical equipment that she will need that takes up a lot of space.

I cannot suggest any certain company, as I have not used any of them yet, but in searching for information I found some information on gonomad.com. If you search "Travel Lighter, Ship Your Luggage", it should give you the correct site. It gave me some information on how it could work and a listing of a few companies.

Hmmm, might be another business venture for our mayor?

Buy a tent and all the supplies, and set up the campsite for folks at the Fort that want to tent camp but due to travel issues can't easily get all their gear to the Fort.

If I lived closer it might be an idea. I did think about renting a storage unit close to WDW where if someone had the transportation to get there could rent the stuff but then I wouldn't be there to check everything out after a rental.

if your trip is timed with our group of classic VWs in May 3-8th we'd be happy to tote an extra tent & stove set up.

6+ classic vw campers travelling down the coast from NY to FL & back.

When we travel we ship all of our luggage to the resort. We pack in 2 LARGE suitcases, prepared for all weather. Cost of 70lb+ suitcases was $64 one way for both thru FedEx. Been doing this for many years so we don't have the hassle at the airports and they are waiting at the desk when we check in. Shipping home from FW would be a bit problematic if you don't get a car. The desk at FW is the only spot we've found that will not return ship for us. We found a FedEx location not too far from DTD so drive the suitcases to ship home. If you pack your stuff in sturdy duffle bags or trunks (I'd opt for the duffle bags since they weigh less) and ship you'd have things there when you check in. If you do Magical Express and fly with your stuff you can't be sure when you'll get your equipment as they may deliver at 3am in the morning.
