Hong Kong Disneyland and Disneyland Paris TR

Hong Kong Disneyland and Paris.

As most would know I’m a Disney nut through and through. I’ve also been going through the phenomenon of going to the Disney Parks more often as the years have gone by. 6 years, 4 years, 3 years, 4 years, bit over a year, bit under a year.
Of course I’m not sure many Aussies could beat PrincessinOz who flies to the US every second week it seems. And then writes PTRs and TRs the alternate weeks. ;)
Sadly for me although the frequency increased it reached a plateau at a year apart before appearing to become less frequent again.
The last trip to a Disney Park for me was in December 09. A sadly Disney Park free trip to the US occurred in October 10. With the next on the horizon not being until at least a year away.

However the fates combined to send me on a holiday to London this past Feb 2011 to visit the BF. The hunt is always on for the best airfare and Europe is always complicated. So after much hunting and deliberating and discussion I went with an Air France offer which took you to Paris, allowed for a stop in London, and then provided 2 free Asia stopovers. Code shares with Qantas and KLM allowed the stopovers and dates to work. However, after that experience I will be doing my damnedest to never fly with Qantas ever again. And I’m not sure I’d bother with an Asian stopover again either.

So a run down on the Itinerary –
Sydney – Singapore (2 nights) – Paris (3 nights DLP, 3 nights Paris city) – London (1+6 nights) – Amsterdam - Hong Kong (4 nights) – Sydney
It was a very full itinerary and I’m still in a time flux. Which is why this report isn’t instantaneous like a PrincessinOz one. However I will try to do my best.
If it makes you feel any better…I planned to simply do a Hong Kong Trip Report. However, given I stayed on property at Paris this time I thought I’d include a trip report of that.
So…now that I have bored you into a deep sleep I will begin.

Singapore…how I hate you…
Ok…not the best start…but this city is torture for people who don’t tolerate humidity. I left Sydney before the bad heatwave and arrived in a “cooler” temperature range. However I also arrived into near 100% humidity. Which I don’t play well with. I am glad I visited as part of an included stopover. And I certainly see the advantages of breaking the journey. But I honestly think I’d go through if possible and just crash at the other end. Because what I found when I arrived is that although I had the opportunity to nap after arriving in Paris at 6:10am, I couldn’t get to sleep as I was half there and half not. The flight wasn’t quite long enough if that makes sense? I got 1-2hours shut eye on the flight which did recharge the batteries enough to not allow me to nap. Which meant that I started flagging earlier than I hoped.

Lets elaborate on that arrival though. I will say overall I was far more impressed with Air France and KLM on this trip than Qantas. However, Air France did make for a fun arrival by landing with a bounce and swerve before taxiing to somewhere near Siberia. After we finally stopped taxiing we disembarked by staircase onto the tarmac. Yes. Stairs. Tarmac. Outside. In the cold. Before walking over to a bus to transport us to a terminal. Well…I use the word Terminal loosely. I’m sure it was. But although it was a decent distance from our parking spot it still didn’t seem to get us to CDG proper.

Up escalators, down hallways, around corners. Not surprisingly the luggage had well arrived by the time we got to Baggage Claim. I want its transport route next time. But thankfully after getting through this whole ordeal I had a smiling face and big hug waiting for me after going through passport control.
Due to my early arrival my hero had flown in from London the day before and stayed at an airport hotel. Sadly the one he chose was slightly more hassle to get to from the airport than one might anticipate due to the French approach to access to train stations. [stairs…always stairs…] but it was welcome having somewhere to go to wash face and get changed before returning to the airport to get the bus to Disneyland Paris.

So…

Disneyland Paris!!!
We returned to the Terminal and worked our way around to where the Disney Bus departs from. Might I suggest you do a thorough study of where exactly it departs from. There are a few locations I believe. The BF was in charge of this. So I’m not entirely sure. But in true French style they don’t really provide signs until you are getting close
But…we made it…and didn’t wait long for the bus.

DisneyBus.jpg

AndyandMeDLPbus.jpg

Interestingly when we first got there only a handful of people were waiting but the bus was pretty much full by the time we left. Now there are a few ways to get to DLP. The train and the bus are the main 2. Or hiring a car. I would recommend the bus over the train I think. It is mostly door to door to the actual hotel. Even if you get the train you then need to get a bus from the station to the hotel as the station is closer to the park entry.
If you are staying for a while...Especially off property...I would recommend a car. But if you are staying on property and are just there for the parks then you don't need a car. Everything is walking distance.......although it can seem a very long way at times ;)
If you are staying at the Disneyland hotel the walk wouldn’t be too bad from the station however as it is at the entrance to Disneyland. But you would then probably need to go through the bag check which wouldn’t be easy.

To get the bus you buy a ticket per person and then when the bus pulls in to pick you up you load your own bags into the underneath. There are shelfs above the head in the bus but they are only really laptop bag size. So if you take it on the bus with you expect to nurse it if it doesn’t fit. We thought BFs carry on could sit on a spare seat but there weren’t any. But we sat it in the aisle after everyone was settled.

I can’t remember how long we were on the road but it wasn’t too long. The drop off started with New York Hotel. Then Newport. Then Sequoia.
With the bus so loaded and hardly anyone getting off at the previous stops we thought Sequoia must be a big stop. But we were the only ones who got off there. So we think they must have been going to Cheyenne and Santa Fe.
We hopped off. Grabbed our bags. And walked in the door. Slightly confused. You see there are 2 entrances. And we got dropped off at what I would call the back door. It looks like a proper entrance with a Portico and all. However we still had to walk all the way round to the Check In counter.

On Check In our room was ready (bonus!) and not only that it was a GREAT room. We booked a Montana Room with Lake View. However the definition of Lake view can vary. There is also an issue with both this hotel and Newport and walking distances because of the large wings. But we got a room right above the entrance/exit to the path to the Village and Parks. Score!!!
I’ll add some hotel photos when I get a chance. But I don’t think I have many. I do have some of our view though. I’ll also add more photos to the trip report as I get them uploaded.

So. After check in and dumping bags we were off to Disneyland!!!

I was awake…trust me…would I lie? But seriously I was doing ok at this point. There was one destination I had in mind. Phantom Manor. You see when I first went to DLP it was closed. It was supposed to reopen on our last day however it didn’t :(
To say I was disappointed is putting it mildly. I am obsessed with the Haunted Mansion and I’m not ashamed of saying that. So Phantom Manor is very important to me. It is similar but different…more different than I expected. But downright amazing.
It is hard in some ways to say which is better. But Phantom Manor is very very special. And I’m inclined to say it is my favourite. I know the spiel to Haunted Mansion by heart. I could recite it for you if I like. Sadly doing this for Phantom Manor isn’t likely to happen as it is in French. But the scenes are really cool. And the stretching room actually is a lift.

Welcome back!!!! PrincessInOz would be very proud of you for starting a TR. I am in awe of your great achievement. I too am aiming to get to all 5 castles, although by the time I get there, I am guessing ShangHai would have been built already...

Queenie, I am a bit confused so is the Disney Bus run by DLP? And you are saying that it is door to door? Just wondering wondering if the number of hotel stops is the main reason you're recommending a hire car.

There is a possibility that we're going to DLP in 2012 so I am now paying close attention...LOoking forward to hearing more about HK Disneyland. Going in May.

Oh and its nice to be able to put a face to the BF!

Lol...need to rephrase that.
I do recommend a car. If you are there for an extended period and want to do a day trip to somewhere else.
But what I ACTUALLY meant to say is that I recommend the Bus over the Train.
Sorry about the lack of clarity...

Because you tend to travel in packs I would recommend the bus to you :rotfl: as it really is an easier process than the train.
I don't want to mislead so I won't confirm if it is actually run by Disney. But it IS a door to door service from CDG to the Disney hotels
http://visit.disneylandparis.co.uk/visiting-paris/access-from-airports.xhtml
http://www.vea-shuttle.co.uk/vea-bus-timetable.asp

I suspect it is like the Mears relationship with WDW.
My crack about it sort of being door to door is simply that we still had to trundle around to the Check in deck. On stone paving...which is all with the 'theming' of the hotel...

Sequoia Lodge

Ok so here are some photos from the "rear" of the hotel. If you do a google map search you'll start to understand how these hotels all work together. But this is where you come out to leave towards the path to the Disney Village...and ultimately the parks.

Our room you can see in these photos. Going with photo number 2
We were on the floor below the top floor. And it is the one with the window open a crack roughly in the middle. 4.5 from the left. 5.5 from the right

These are the view from the room. Yes we could see the castle. In the wider angles you see the balloon...then move right and you see the tops of the Disneyland Hotel...Then between the tree tops is a castle. I was actually quite impressed. It was easier to see with the naked eye than it appears.

Moving left from the balloon you move across to the studios and can see the Tower of Terror.

We leave for DLP in 34 sleeps. We wont get to DLP until late April. Loved the photos, I am getting a bit excited now. The castle looks beautiful. There are so many other parts to this trip that I keep forgetting about this little bit. The kids don't know that we are going to DLP so we do not talk about it. Wish they would post the opening hours, only have the first two weeks of April. Can't wait to hear more.

The Parade

A Disney Parade is an important thing to me. It is a chance for all sorts of characters to appear and excitement abounds. Disneyland Paris sadly has no fireworks but they have a decent parade. Their Castle stage show is pretty cool too...but more on that later...
They might on special occasions or in peak season have more. But for February there were no fireworks. So the focus is on the parade.

The thing about this though is that it is at 5pm. Why?? I do not know. The traditional parade time is 3pm. It is really annoying because the light was already a bit of a problem with being overcast. But the light level was dropping fast during the parade. It's winter guys!!!
This is why the photos are a bit dark. But BF might play with them a bit in the future to improve them.

This is the same parade I saw during my visit 2 years ago minus a couple of floats. Due to some work in one path from the hub the parade had to go down Main Street, around the hub, and back up Main Street. This means that the whole parade needs to fit around the hub.
As far as I can tell the missing floats were the Princess ones as they were found floating around loose. Free from floats.
There isn’t a lot to say about this parade. But it is a lovely one. I love the Villain float.
It is also important for those wishing to film and or photograph this parade that the floats are double sided. You need to be somewhere you can look both ways easily.

:woohoo: Thanks for sharing your trip report makes me want to go even more but i better get this trip out the way before i dream of planning another one :yay:

How strange that they had the parade so late as it does look like it's almost night time!

Castle Show

This show is on multiple times during the day. We saw it during daylight hours. But I think it was better at night. Much harder to photograph. They move VERY fast…

But it makes it much more exciting and fun in the dark. The number of Characters and the outfits Mickey wore was great!

It's a very beautiful castle!

Those Villian floats are great. :lovestruc

How long would you recommend staying at EuroDisney (or TokyoDisney)? Bear in mind that I would want to shoot fireworks (so Winter in Euro may be out or a compromise)....and the indoor rides...(multiple times on is a must).

BF says there haven't been fireworks in years. But he also hasn't been for a few years. So maybe go over to the UK and Paris board and ask them about when you might see some.

I'm going to get to crowds in a bit. Because the crowds on the weekend were BAD. So if you do choose to go at a busier time than winter. I would think at LEAST 4 full days.
We arrived on Friday and things were fine. Sat and Sun we were getting 80min wait on Crush's Coaster. It was crazy. But we decided to do all the Studios shows which worked well. And finished the crazy queue rides on the Monday. Which again was much quieter.

Tokyo. You need at least 2 full weekdays. Weekends are crazy. Unheard of wait times. 180min wait for winnie the pooh. This was in Feb - Winter.
I would think at least 5 days.
BTW...I actually have 4 trip reports...
This one on Tokyo http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2458888 and the DCL one in addition to the 2 "in progress"

After the Castle show the park was closed. We had a bit of a look in the shops. But we were tired and had a dinner reservation at King Ludvig’s so we bypassed most by going through the secret passage…

Walkwaybehindtheshopsalongmainstreet.jpg

You will find a passageway on both sides of Main Street running behind the shops. It is great…but beware. If it has been raining it becomes an ice rink. Thankfully we didn’t get rain this trip so it was ok. But the previous visit we discovered there are many drainage issues in Paris. And the skating rink was especially fun.

I don’t have really any food porn. I was hungry. What I have is iphone photos of the BF. He was having a lovely time. What he is holding is a Rosemary sprig. The meal was pork and saurkraut. We both had that.
It is great German food. The restaurant is in the Disney Village. Like Downtown Disney. Family friendly but good for everyone. Not the place for an intimate dinner. But it was lovely. The beer is actually good value too. And it was a really nice ale. I don’t drink beer. But it had a good flavour.
There is an upstairs as well and there was a school group up there. So they work with placement well.

We then retired to Sequoia Lodge and their bar. It is really nice. With a big fireplace and nice nooks you can sit in. They also have regular tables.
I had my first Glowtini…

Day Two at Disneyland Paris.
When you book accommodation at a Disneyland Paris Resort you basically get it packaged. I never looked at room only rates because in asking my trusty BF he said he basically always books through the uk brochure prices or the .co.uk website.
But…it might be worth looking at if you are staying an extended and your park dates don’t include the block out dates for the annual pass. The base Annual Pass is very good value once you get to 4 days or more basically. Finding out info on it is harder than I remember as it is ONLY on the French website. So maybe go through google and put in the url to get it translated.

In any case we went with the normal package, which includes continental breakfast and length of stay park ticket. You also get early entry. For when we were there it was 8am instead of 10am for both parks.
In researching it became clear Americans don’t always know what to make of this breakfast. But anyone who has travelled in Europe before gets what’s expected or better. The key is to remember that while this is a Disney Park…you are in PARIS, FRANCE. Not the US. So no you don’t get an American Breakfast.
Options included deli meats, cheese, bread rolls, bread, croissants, brioche, cereal, and fruit. Plus condiments/jams/jellies. I loved having nutella on bread rolls and croissants. I will say the cereal was a bit out in the open for my liking. But this is common in the US aswell. There was juice. There was a hot drink machine serving various coffee types and hot chocolate. I was satisfied.
What you need to know…
When you check in you will get allocated a time frame to come down for breakfast. I don’t know if you can change it. But if you want earlier then just go down and it shouldn’t be a problem. We got 7:30-7:45. Great. Busy but not too chaotic. It is around 8:30 and later things get busier. So I was happy.
So. After breakfast we hit the road.

First stop Phantom Manor :) YAY!!
There was an issue with Big Thunder so we decided to come back later. We went back through to the hub and watched the Disney Train. This trundles down Main Street and had different characters to when I saw it last time.

It is worth being mindful of when this is on as it is great fun. A little piece of parade that stops in the hub. Lots of fun.

I am sure that I remember reading that DLP only has fireworks 2 or 3 days a year on occasions such as Bastille Day. This was an arrangement when the park was built to help keep things smooth with the locals. It is not the norm at all.

We are going on a weekday, you should avoid Wednesdays as Parisian school children do not go to school on Wed or only for half days.

Weekends are busy. We are going the week after Easter and the week of the royal wedding. Aaargh. Stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Loving the trip report and photos. It is helping to bring the park to life. I cannot believe I will be there in less than 60 days.

I like the parade cars. It looks like they are different to the floats used in the US.

Was this an early morning parade?

It isn't a parade as such. I thought it had a specific time but I've never really known what it was.
On looking at the current schedule I don't see it mentioned
http://news.disneylandparis.co.uk/UK/EN/Neutral/Images/ShowsAndParades.pdf

We usually just sort of crash into it.
The first time we were in a shop on main street and this music started. It came past and then it was gone.
This time we walked into the hub as it was there.

It was between 10 and 11...I think???:confused3

It is basically a train with about 5 carriages I think.

Wow you're brave going around the royal wedding.
I didn't know about the issue with Wednesdays. But I know we timed around the UK half term. But the weekend was still crazy. :headache:

Word is many Poms are leaving town during the wedding due to combining its public holidays and others to get about a week off. So I don't know if they're off to Paris Disneyland :lmao:

I wish you the very best with it all :goodvibes
