I was thinking it would be fun to surprise DS14 with a quick, last minute trip to WDW for his October break at the end of Oct (like his sister went alone for her 10th birthday in May)...but airfare!! :scared1::scared1::scared1:

I am NOT paying $500-$700 per person to fly from MKE to MCO! Are you people out of your minds??

Even though I hate to drive in FL, I checked out TPA and that wasn't much better.

I checked Airtran, Southwest, Delta, United and Frontier.

:sad2: :(

You mentioned "October break". Are alot of schools in the area closed? If so, all the cheap seats are probably gone. You need to book early for school break times.

What are your dates? I threw in Oct 22 to 29 in Orbitz and found AirTran as low as $313.

You might want to check Midway...I know it's a long drive from Milwaukee, but lately I've found cheaper airfare from MDW via southwest than from MKE with Southwest. Better than driving all the way!

Yup, the entire state is closed Oct 27 and 28th for the annual state wide teachers conference. I'm looking at Oct 26th-30th. I've even looked at our local small airports and they are even more expensive! :scared1:

There are plenty of seats available...just at a very high cost.

We're already 2+ hours from Milwaukee (to the north). I'm not going to drive 2 more hours to Chicago. :)

Unfortunately, airlines know when schools are off and hike up the fares. I checked Orbitz and there are several options between $400-$500 but are connections with not the best times.

How about Green Bay or Appleton if you are 2 hours north of Milwaukee?

Edit: Nevermind, Allegiant isn't doing Appleton in October

What about flying into Tampa and driving into WDW? That's what we are doing :)

Edit again:: You can do Rockford to Sanford/Orlando for $541.74, you have to rent a car when you get to Sanford though or hire Mears.

If it's a big "break" week then you are really too late unless you are willing to be VERY flexible. Maybe skip a day of school and try "shifting" your dates.

Otherwise... the early birds got those fares you want. The airlines only sell X cheap seats per plane.

I have noticed that airfare in/out of Wisconsin is really high. I do think you waited too long to book during the WEAC convention, though. A lot of people leave town then. If you can leave on the 25th Delta has some flights for $260 out of MKE and there are some cheaper flights out of Chicago.

ETA: I use this search engine: http://matrix.itasoftware.com/search.htm. It picks up most airlines (expect SWA and Frontier).

How far from MSP are you? Our break is the week prior - that's when we are going.

But maybe MSP would be cheapers considering it's not break week for us? Come here a day early, hit Mall of America, then fly out to MCO from here?

$279 for 27th - 31st?

MSP is five hours away, so not worth the drive for the cost savings. :)

I guess I waited too long. Darn it.

I just checked Airtran & they had their last flight of the day on the 26th for $179. Return flights were still all $300 something.

You might want to check your school's calendar. Since Republicans went after the teacher's unions there is no longer a teacher's convention and many districts revised their calendars. If they have not changed it this year, then this will be the last year kids have those days off.

OP, I feel your pain. I've been watching the prices out of Duluth for the past 8 months and they haven't dropped much below $500. ($489 was the lowest so far) No way, no how can we afford to do that.

How the heck are people flying places these days? I have NEVER paid over $350 out of Duluth and even that was high.......

Others have said it might be your timing but I don't think so. Prices from the midwest area are not budging for *off* times. Prices are staying very very high no matter what day, what month or what time of day you fly.

Good luck to anyone else searching for decent airfares.

I feel your airfare pain....we are going to Florida in AUG 2012 (Newark NJ to Orland) & Continental is releasing airfare for AUG 2012 -11 months out & to fly out on a Sat or Sun it is $700 PER PERSON!

No way are we flying....we will probably take the autotrain down (as it is $300+) on the way down & drive back (autotrain is 3x the cost to come home).

Crazy...makes me want to go nowhere.
