Health question for the DIS doctors!!!

Glad you got your answers. Hoping your dd has a speedy recovery! !

So now that you know strep was the culprit, what are they going to do for treatment? I say this because I know people who've had very serious complications from strep: one of my coworkers had a heart attack at age 30 as it damaged the heart and my BIL got rheumatic fever and has had a pace maker and valve replacement. He was 45 when he got the pacemaker. Not to scare you, but please make sure the doctor is on top of this!

On a side note, my 8 yr old had undiagnosed strep last year. We were on vacation when he started urinating pure blood and brought him to an er. Long story short he was misdiagnosed with a urinary tract infection and discharged (he was really swollen and I kept pressing this issue with the er Dr who said it was because he was vomiting ). 2 days later he wasn't improving called my ped for follow up and he was diagnosed with post streptococcus glomertheritus (spelling? ?). Apparently swelling is a sign your kidneys aren't functioning right. He was hospitalized for two days and had to be treated for high blood pressure. It has been 16 months and he is still under the care of a specialist because his kidneys aren't functioning properly. I never knew strep could be this nasty.:sad1:

Wow, sorry to hear that story! Yikes!

My oldest was born with a heart defect so we took having strep as pretty serious.

Strep can be really serious! We tend to get complacent about it because we have such good drugs now. Sadly, I think some doctors overlook it because of that complacency!!
I can't understand why my dd showed no other signs of having it.....for a month! Scary to think what could have happened.

You mention she is in costume as a character, did the doctor rule out cellulitis or something from the heat and rubbing too? If it's looking like bruising not welts of nodules I was just thinking out loud.
Hope it is resolved soon.

Does your daughter now antibiotics can interfere with the effectiveness of birth control? Her partner should be using condoms for the month she is on it.

I am curious about her doctor's office speaking to you about her condition. Isn't that a HIPAA violation? My DDs are 20 and 22. Their doctors won't speak to me.

I think any adult can opt to sign a form that allows health information to be shared with someone else. (Or opt to not sign, and keep their information private.)

And that is a good point about antibiotics. Hopefully if it's an issue the provider would have mentioned it.

and this is why i have a specialist for everything.
any primary doctor i've gone to never has an answer or has the wrong answer so i only go there for my yearly check up and non specific things. for example i went to have stitches removed after falling at disney world.
i have a gyn for my feminine health, an ent for well anything ear/nose/throat/sinus related, an endocrinologist for my thyroid condition, a retinal specialist as i've had several retinal detachments , a glaucoma specialist as i have glaucoma, a cataract specialist as i had a cataract, and a dermatologist. (and a dentist of course)

I agree it's a good idea to have specialized doctors. But...I've seen it go badly before. For instance..my dad was living in Florida. He had health issues. He was elderly. He had a cardiologist. He had a lung doctor. To single out the worst offenders. When he had breathing issues, the cardiologist said its the lungs...go to that doctor. The lung guy said no, it's cardiac. It took a third person to look at the big picture before they got it right. So, it's good to have that one physician with all the records at hand.
Yes, our doctor dropped the ball. I was amazed when she called me, rather than have her nurse talk to me. At least we did away with that 'middle man'.

In a perfect world I'm sure everyone would like to go directly to a specialist.. But from first hand experience, I know it can take months to get into certain specialists.. sometimes calling your primary for a same day appointment ends up having to be the first line of defense.

Is there a plan for when she goes abroad if your dd were to get sick? Maybe be proactive and have her check out the medical office or clinic that other students go to at the school in Europe so if she does get sick, even though it might not be strep, she could feel better about getting medical attention.

No, it has nothing to do with her being in her feet.....other than her not resting her legs as she should!
And yes. She knows about the drug interactions. They know what to do in this situation!!

As for being aboard and possibly getting sick. Yep, she knows it could happen. The school had things in place if it should happen.

And yes, she gave the doctors office permission to speak to me. She, and the doctor, felt it was best since dd lives in another state right now, with a whacky schedule.

Thanks for the good thoughts and advice.

OP-don't listen to the posters who are putting you down for trying to help your dd with this issue, that's what parent's are for. Parenting doesn't end when someone turns 18. I think it's great that you are involved and helping your dd, it shows she trusts you and can confide in you. Good for you for being there for your dd. I can't believe people think this is strange or inappropriate. It shows you are close, some people are not close to their children. Good luck.

No worries! I fully realize that I am more involved with this dd's life than with my other two kids. I'm sure that many see this as helicopter parenting. And they are entitled to their opinion.
A quick story...my dd got a job in a theme park, about 80 mins from us. Her boyfriend, same job, lives about 20 mins away, albeit in another state! So, she decided to stay with his family. I wasn't so happy about that....it would be nice to see her during the summer and I knew that just wouldn't happen unless she had to be here for some reason. So, I was having this discussion with a male friend of ours. He had 15 y/o twin ds's. He looked at me and said...'Geez, how old is she? Don't you think she's an adult and can do whatever she wants? Lighten up!!' Sure, she's an adult....but that living arrangement just doesn't sit well. And I have to wonder how this guy, and his wife, are going to react when their ds's start making these choices. Just goes to show you that everyone has an opinion....and usually feel very good about sharing it!!!

So, yep, many think I'm overly involved. But, I don't think so. Dd needed some assistance with this issue.....she made it possible for the doctor to talk to me about the situation. The situation is resolved, thank heaven, and we can both get back to living our own lives. We don't get to see her more often than once a month. That doesn't make me happy especially since she's gone for 3 months this fall. But, she makes her own choices at this point. She has to make some mistakes in order to grow as an individual. I just choose to not have those mistakes be medical ones.
