They have not announced the Haunted Mansion closure date to have the HMH overlay installed. Starting on Monday, August 25th is the best guess at this point based on past years (and the assumption that HalloweenTime will start on Friday, Sept 12th).

I wonder if they are going to do anything to fix the Matterhorn cars so that people don't hurt after riding them (every single person I have talked with that has been on the new cars complains about this)

As for Haunted Mansion, this is when it normally goes down for the Halloween/Christmas Overlay.

I read somewhere (of course can't remember now) that HM was going down on the 27th, and I specifically remembered that because we are going the 25-31st and made a note to make sure we hit HM on the 26th so we didn't miss it.

But who knows what can happen between now and then! I'm sad to be missing the Matterhorn on our first (and maybe only) DL trip. At least we've done HM at WDW before.

I wonder where the info for that link is coming from (for the closings). The closing for HM and Indiana Jones I can't find on any other website. We know about HM but not Space Mountain? Why would IJ ride go down for just 4 days. I may actually stay an extra day till that Friday to be sure I can hit Indy.

I am really bummed that both are going to be closed during half-marathon weekend! This will be our first trip to DL (and I have no idea when we'll get back since we're on the east coast). I knew HM would be down, but hate that the Matterhorn will be down too. I guess I don't understand why they don't wait until after the race weekend to close.

If it follows the pattern of the last few years and assuming that it doesn't go into an extended refurb for some reason, it should re-open on the Friday leading into MLK weekend.

As others have said HM should re-open by late January. For the last few years, it closed on either Monday or Tuesday after New Year and the re-opened 11 days later on a Friday or Saturday. It closed from 1/7-1/17 on both 2013 and 2014, so it depends on when the Holiday Season ends at DLR.

The HM goes down to get its overlay, so they really couldn't remain open through the half marathon weekend unless they wanted to push back the start of HalloweenTime by a full week. In terms of the Matterhorn, I suspect it has to do with when they want to finish by. The rehab is slated to run through 11/13. Friday, 11/14 and 11/7 are commonly guessed date for the start of the Holiday season. If they push the rehab back, that has the Matterhorn closed until the weekend before Thanksgiving, which should be after the holidays start. So my guess is both of these rehabs have to do with the start dates of Seasonal Events.

it's almost always been closed for Half Marathon weekend, for the HMH overlay.. you'd have to come a week prior to see it before it goes down. You can come back to the DL half next year for the 10th anniversary. new medal too.

Like PPs have said, if the overlay removal follows the patterns of previous years it will close at the end of the first week of January and reopen 2 weeks later. However, DLR has not released this years holiday time dates yet, and there is always the possibility that there could be an extended refurb if they're sprucing things up for the 60th. It will probably be open in February, but I wouldn't count on it 100%

Thanks for the replies everyone! We were originally planning on our first day in Disneyland being 8/25 but I think we'll bump it up a day so we can make sure to do Haunted Mansion and Matterhorn.

I knew HM would be closed, although I'm still disappointed because it is my favorite ride at WDW. But I knew, from the get-go, that it would be down.

And if I ever do come back to DL, it won't be for this particular race weekend. I want to ride HM and would love to see the overlay.

I was really looking forward to riding the Matterhorn though. So, yeah, I'm totally disappointed that we'll miss it by three days.

Space Mountain reopens July 4th and should remain open for a while, as this was an extended refurbishment. If the do Ghost Galaxy this year, it may go down for one day to make the switch, but it's my understanding that their goal is to have it were they literally just have to turn a switch and it will change.

As for the Matterhorn, don't be too disappointed, the new cars they have installed are EXTREMELY painful. There have been a lot of reports of bruising from them. There are also many riders who literally can no longer fit in them and I am not just talking about larger people or those that are extremely tall. I have known some 5'6" people who are of average weight that can't fit. So, we are all hoping that they fix the car design somehow.
