Grand One Tipping

    Has anyone tipped the captain and first mate on the Grand One Yacht before?

    I did this in the past but since the price has gone up alot, 20% for each of them seems a little excessive.:confused3 Any thoughts or experience?

    I think 15-20% is still appropriate. That is what we tipped for the fireworks cruise, and I believe that is the general expectation / etiquette / whatever. The total price of the item should not be relevant except to your budget, of course. But I wouldn't tip less because the price was higher.

    vicki is right. The going rate is the going rate. When you book the Grand One, the proper tip is expected.

    I guess I didn't explain myself well or phrase my question properly. In the past I tipped EACH person on the boat 20%. Of course, the butler gets the 20% for food but tipping the captain and first mate each is 40% of the trip cost. My question should have been should the tip be 20% of the trip cost for both the captain and first mate or 20% for each? I'm not trying to be cheap, I wasn't in the past but I have since learned that they thought my tip was extravagant compared to what they normally get.:confused3 Just asking for opinions.

    And not that it matters, but there's nothing cheap about it. My total cost for our evening on the Grand One is $5000.

    We booked the Grand One with a group, and I believe the tip of 20% (it may have been 25%, as there were a number of us - but it wasn't 40%!) was shared between the captain and his mate. We did not have butler service, so I'm not sure about the etiquette there.

    I don't think 20% of total cost should be expected for every cast member!:eek:

    40% of $5000 is $2000!!!!!!
    I'm generous but not THAT generous!!!!!!
    I would definitely divide the 20%.

    Can't wait to hear all about this - la de da!!!!

    I'm sure it will be a night for you to remember always. What a fantastic way to celebrate your ds's graduation!!!!!

    We tipped 20% to the Capt. and I expected him to take care of the crew. You don't tip everyone on a restaurant staff but many tips are shared in those situations and I view this the same way.

    I do believe many people are not aware that tipping is a part of some of these activities. I know our fishing guides and guides for fireworks cruises in the past have been very appreciative when we tipped... so either 20% is unusual or they are just very, very gracious.

    I must say the one thing that seems odd to us is NOT tipping our guides when we use the VIP tour guides. Now we just bring along a few gift baskets with local products to give to some of the club level CM's as well as a guide if we are using them. T

    Yes I agree 20% tip for the WHOLE crew is what I would do, not each one. I did miss that part of your original question.

    I have two thoughts; first, I agree, many people must skip the tipping for activities, as we've always gotten the same appreciative response from CMs, as though it is not a common occurrence.:confused:

    Second - did they recently prohibit VIP tour guides from accepting tips? We gave our guide a 20% tip, but it has been several years ago. She did try to get us to keep the money, but when we insisted, she accepted. I hope that wasn't against the rules?

    I'll live vicariously through you until our July trip.

    The Grand One - I'm so jealous. Of course I don't DH's brain to explode so we won't be doing that one!

    Hopefully next year we'll meet up again for another BC/YC Mini- Meet!

    Can't wait to see the pictures and hear all about it. Congratulations to your son. Now the really hard part starts - watching them go away to college.

    Today was ds's last day of Law School - he's been going to school since he was 4! I'm not sure he'll know how to act!!!

    Timely thread - I was going post something similar myself.

    We're doing the pontoon from the yacht Club in September for Illuminations. I'm assuming 20% (or so) of the total cost would be the tip collectively from the group.

    So, from memory the cruise is around $350, based on that the tip would be $70 in total.

    We don't have tipping positions in Australia, so although I'm familiar with the resturants, baggage, etc, this one is new to me.

    OMG - here I was thinking that your oldest ds was graduating from high school! Well even more CONGRATULATIONS to him then. What a wonderful graduation present.

    In all the confirmations we have received it specifically stated that tipping was not expected nor allowed for the guides so we just began taking some local items and making them into a basket as we do for the concierge staff.
    I believe our first experience with the guides was in 2009? So not sure if this was a change or not. We were also turned down on one of the safari tours when we tried to tip the guide.

    It's really hard to keep up with. :confused3 Concierge is not allowed to accept tips but event planners are.:confused3 It gets confusing. We need a guide book............:rotfl2:
