where should I request to be closest to the main building / monorial?
Any other tips for first time GF'ers?

Boca Chica and Big Pine Key are close to the main building.

Sugar Loaf is the closest, but it's concierge.

Maybe someone else can help who has stayed in the other buildings. I am only familiar with the Main Building and Sugar Loaf. I can't think of the others off hand.

Big Pine Key is closest, but none are very far. I really don't think it makes much of a difference. For everything you always wanted to know about the GF, post on the GF FAQ thread. The ladies there are friendly, knowledgable and passionate about the GF!

We stayed in Sago Cay (Garden View room). It is very close to Gasperilla's and as we walked out of SC and looked left, we could see the castle. It was an easy walk to the Main Building (could see it from our balcony); the bus depot and the monorail. If we every stay at the GF again, I would not hesitate to request Sago Cay. We loved it there.
