Fort Wilderness lessons learned for the first timer

Well after reading a lot of the posts on this site, I thought I would share some of the things I have learned on this (my first trip) to Disney World and Fort Wilderness Camp site. Most of the posts I have read are either from people who have been here many times, or have not yet been here but are planning a trip here. I hope that the lessons learned with our bad experiences helps others in the future.

First off, the address for Ft Wilderness does not exist in most GPS mapping systems. That is because it is on Disneys private property and they do not report their private roads to the mapping companies. The directions you get to the park by calling Disney are more often than not from somebody over the phone in a different state and have never been here. We were told to take I4 east from I95, that would have put us in the atlantic ocean, if I4 east from I95 existed that is. Secondly there is a resort here called Wilderness lodge, not to be confused with Fort Wilderness Camp. They are two different places, and the signs can be very confusing to somebody that has never been here before. We will come back to this later.

This place is also not like KOA, they will not escort you to your space. Even if you get here in the middle of the night. They will hand you a cartoon map that is in no way to scale and point in a general direction for you and finding your space in a poorly lit park at night will be the first bit of “Disney Majic” you will get to experience.
Another interesting thing you will learn is that they will not tell you what space within the park you will get prior to your arrival. So if you are trying to figure out if you will need to rent a golf cart or not, you will not know the answer to that until you get here. Unfortunatly, a golf cart requires a reservation 2 days in advance. Funny how that works huh?
The next major piece of information we learned the hard way, is that if you try to get to any decent place from within Majic Kingdom to see the fire works show without first staking out a good spot 3 hours in advance, you well be herded like cattle towards the exit to the park. The viewing area is very small and fills up fast. Once it does they keep people moving towards the exit down a cordoned off area they have set up in advance.
Next, unless you have made reservations, don’t expect to be eating anything other than hamburgers, pizza, and hot dogs. This is not Disneyland, they all expect you to make reservations here.

If you want to leave Disney property to go to Seaworld or another park and wish to take a taxi, DON’T LET THE FRONT DESK CALL YOUR CAB! I cannot stress this one enough. They have a contract with a specific taxi company who has been known to rip people off. I asked for a taxi that takes visa and knew in advance what the fair was supposed to be, halfway to Seaworld he shut off the meter and demanded $80 in cash for a $32 ride. When I complained to Disney, they said that was a problem between me and the cab company. Even though, they are the ones that have the contract with the taxi company, and they are the ones that called and recommended them.

Which brings up the next handy piece of information you should know. When you stay in a resort, you are given a room key. This key has your name on it and acts as your Disney ID for the parks extended hours. Fort Wilderness is SUPPOSED to give each member of your party a blue card with their names on it. This is what also GIVES YOU ACCESS BACK TO FT WILDERNESS IF YOU LEAVE DISNEY PROPERTY! Ask me how I learned this lesson, they do not always give you the cards, and you need to know that you need one in the first place. Especially if you check in after midnight like I did.

When you purchase things in the Disney stores you can ask them to send them to the Ft Wilderness outpost (store). To do this, you just ask the clerk to have them sent there and fill out a green form. MAKE SURE THE BOX NEXT TO FORT WILDRNESS CAMP IS CHECKED AND NOT THE WILDERNESS LODGE! You would be surprised how many park employees have no idea there is a difference. And when you go to pick up your packages, they have been sent to the wrong place. This “suck factor” is increased greatly if they do this on the last day of your stay because it takes another day for them to fix the mistake.
If you purchase a multi day park hopper pass, and you spend nearly all of your time hiding out in your RV due to thunderstorms and tornado warnings, and you have no intentions of EVER returning to Florida to experience some more of the “majic”, the pass is not redeemable at Disneyland, and the pass will become a permanent reminder of why you may not want to return.

Apparently there is some kind of light show down by the dock where you catch the boat to Majic Kingdom, but I wouldn’t know. I have never seen it, and have not been given any information from Fort Wilderness about when it starts. And I don’t feel like sitting there in the rain all night to find out. I guess its like a lot of things here, you will not be told much about anything, you pretty much are left to figure it all out on your own.

I know this sounds like I did not have a good time, and your right. I didn’t, but this post is an after action report for lessons learned. Not about whether or not I had a good time. So for those that will undoubtedly leave posts to slam me for putting this information out there. I don’t care, This is information that people should arm themselves with while planning their trip. Besides, while they are busy writing their angry replies, I will be relaxing in a nice warm dry place in Las Vegas taking a vacation from this “vacation”.:cool2:

Ed,

No reason to "slam" you. This is all valuable info for anyone planning a trip to WDW and the Fort.

I think you summed it up well in your 2nd to last sentence.
This is information that people should arm themselves with while planning their trip.
WDW is one of those places that does take some advanced planning to have a maGical visit. Anyone with some basic internet skills could have educated themselves about all of the issues you had in an evening of searching the multiple Disney forums out here.

Sorry to hear that your planning wasn't as fruitful.

Enjoy Nevada.

So sorry to hear you didn't have the magical trip you envisioned :(
While I've been to disney several times, DH,DD and I are making our first fort visit in June.
You do not say how much pre-planning you did for this trip, but I think you must have done some- You're aware of the DIS boards :)

Hopefully you'll take all the lessons you learned and apply them as life lessons for any new venture you make in the future.

I will say that the upcoming adventure is trip #7 for me. Trips 1-3 were as a teenager with parents, school and church. Trip #4 was the first I took with DH and DD. We had a blast for what we did- very little planning, but after I got back, I realized what we COULD have done, and problems we could have avoided with a little more planning.
Trip #5 was planned to be @ WDW for more days. I planned, but still not enough. (I didn't even know about the DIS boards, or passporter). Yet we still had fun, but still there were several frustrations with meals, etc. because of things we were unaware of.
DH and I went back in Jan for marathon weekend. I had a passsporter, DIS, and I had reservations - still not the one I wanted most though- and had a great trip. However, I expect trip #7 to be the best. I started planning it and even had ressies to resturants before I had resort ressies :) :tinker:

Hopefully, with the info you provided I can avoid your mistakes, and make new ones and share those in june.

I guess to give a shortened version : Planning can sometimes make your trip or break it. Sometimes life happens and there is little you can do to change the outcome. (That's a different story from our Jan. trip).

Hopefully after you settle your nerves in Vegas- you may want to try Disney another time. My motto is either forget about it, or conquer it! To me Disney is the one I want to conquer:smickey:

Hope your trip to Nevada is better :goodvibes

Like I said on the other thread, I'm sorry your trip didn't go as you'd hoped. Hopefully you will have better luck in Vegas $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ :goodvibes

Safe travels Ed

We have done many many trips to Disneyland in the past and this was our first time to WDW. Nobody can control the weather, but after purchasing a 4 day park hopper pass for 4 people and having 2 days left on them. It wouldn't be practical to travel the 2000 miles back just to use them. I wish Disney would honor them at Disneyland. But unfortunately they wont. We did as much prior planning as we could, but there are some things that nobody tells you that can make a lot of difference in how the trip turns out. Like making sure you get a Disney ID card. That was a new one on me, and the staff should have provided them for us. Instead of finding out the hard way when we were asked to provide it and we had the stupid look on our face like "room key? We are staying in our motor home, we dont have a room key". Or the fact that the Wilderness lodge gets even the park employees confused with the Fort Wilderness Camp Ground. We only planned this trip to WDW because we would be in the area, and included it into our trip nearly 6 months ago. Disneyland and WDW are very similar parks with major differences, and I think we will stay with Disneyland. It is a beautiful campground though. i bet it is real nice when the sun actually comes out...

As somebody going to Disney World soon this is one thing that interests me. So if I want to see Wishes I have to get a spot at 7:00pm for the 10:00pm show? I thought these were fireworks. Many years ago I remember watching the fireworks show from right outside Space Mountain (didn't know there were fireworks that night and just got off the ride ). I thought there were great. Can't you see them from just about anywhere in the park?:confused3

you well be herded like cattle towards the exit to the park.

Do they really try to make you leave the park before the fireworks. I thought you could stay and ride attractions till the park closed. This time of year I think it is like 11:00 or 12:00 or later, right.

I have been to Disney World many times and have never been asked to leave the parks before the fireworks began.

I have never gotten a spot at 7:00pm for the 10:00pm fireworks.

However, you will need to get a curb seat about 1 1/2 hours prior to the parade. That is if you want a curb seat.

Also, we don't usually stay in the MH just because of the weather. We put on our raingear, take an umbrella, and off we go.

Sorry you had such a bad experience, I for one love Disney World and will continue to visit. I think it's like anyplace else, the more you research and the more you visit, the more you learn how to make your experience magical.

So what address should I use for Fort Wilderness Campground in my GPS for my first trip in June?

It's the address on your reservations, but here it is:

The campsites at Disney's fort wilderness Resort
4510 North Ft. Wilderness Trail
Lake Buena vista, FL 32830

407-824-2900

Alot of people make the mistake of typing in Orlando, I kow we did many times. Then we looked at our reservations and the address was there.
Hope this helps. Have a great time.

You can use your tickets at Disneyland. Here is some information from mousesavers.com.

Using Walt Disney World Tickets at Disneyland

Interesting, unpublished fact: you can use any unexpired, leftover days on a Walt Disney World ticket at Disneyland or Disney California Adventure! Present the Disney World ticket at the front gate on arrival -- they will take it somewhere, deduct a day from it, and give you a one-day Disneyland Park Hopper ticket. You can repeat this day by day until the Disney World ticket is used up. They will not give you a multi-day ticket all at once, even if you have multiple days left on your Disney World ticket. Also, MouseSavers.com reader Danny P notes that any Disneyland ticket obtained from exchanging a Walt Disney World ticket must be used on the same day it was exchanged.

This policy has been in effect at least since I started this site (2001), and the information was last reconfirmed by a MouseSavers.com reader in February 2011. Don't even bother calling Disneyland to ask about this -- the people answering the phone have no idea and they will tell you they don't take Disney World tickets.

Disneyland tickets are NOT accepted at Walt Disney World, and Annual Passes are only good at the park where they were purchased (Walt Disney World Annual Passes are NOT good at Disneyland, and vice versa). However, there is now a Premier Passport that is good at both locations.

Surely, I can take something away from this post. That said, Ed, I think your post is a combination of not-so-good planning on your part mixed with some bad service by Disney mixed with some bad luck.

You can only kick yourself for your GPS issue and not knowing how to get there. If I'm driving in an RV, I will not only put the info in my GPS, but I will also compare my GPS route with a map to see if they jive before I even leave the house. On top of that, I will also have hand-written directions and a good map at my side in the RV along with a competent navigator.

You do agree that one cannot control the weather, but your issue with not being able to use WDW multi-day park hopper passes ad DL is completely on you. You simply cannot be disappointed by this...you have to do your homework ahead of time if this was your expectation.

Not getting your Key To The World Card (KTTW) is very odd, but I haven't stayed at the Fort yet and when I do this Aug, it'll be in a cabin, so I have to have that card for entry to my cabin....not sure what they are supposed to do for camp / RV sites, but it would seem that this one is totally Disney's fault.

If you knew about this "Light Show" which is either the Electric Water Pageant or MK's fireworks, why didn't you ask somebody about it. You can't expect everything to be handed to you...people can't read your mind.

Having packages transferred to the Fort and there being a mixup with Wilderness "Lodge" is a matter of who had to check the box and if it were you, then you need to know where you are staying or ask someone.

The cab ride (I agree) is a bad deal, but I would ask you what your approach was. This "contract" that Disney has may have nothing to do with them getting a kickback (yeah, weird - I know). Sometimes these contracts are an agreement based on the cab co's willingness to come to WDW, provide enough cabs to be trusted to show up in a timely manner, etc. Just like my roadside assistance, if I need a tow, Jeep will find a tow truck for me, but I have to pay the "independent" tow truck driver.

For fear of going through what you went through, I spend weeks planning. I look at road maps, park maps, familiarize myself with the property, the parks, the special events and read message boards like this one. I ask questions on the more critical stuff and intentionally leave stuff alone where I want to fly by the seat of my pants.

The experience is what YOU make of it. Good luck next time.

I have always gotten my key card, even when we checked in at 1 in the morning. They were in an envelope inside our information folder. I am assuming, I know never assume, that you weren't asked about having charging priveledges on your key cards. If you ever make a return visit to WDW, I'm sure it will be a better experience.

The campsites at Disney's fort wilderness Resort
4510 North Ft. Wilderness Trail
Lake Buena vista, FL 32830

That is the address we use and it works fine.

The message about making sure you have dining reservations is a very important one, I cannot tell you how many times I have told newbies to make their ADR's even if they have to cancel them later. Funny, my DH uses the same words you used "if you don't want to eat burgers and pizza make some ADR's"

You will not be ushered out of the park before it closes and the fireworks can been seen quite nicely from anywhere in front of the castle. It does get crowded but there is always room for one more.

The Electric Water Parade has sailed past the campground at 9:45pm for 40 years.

We have never checked in after dark but I have often said it is something I would not want to do. I can sypathize with you there. No excuse for not getting a KTTW card, everyone in your party should have got one.

The taxi thing, I had happen to me when I needed a cab from the car rental drop off at the Dolphin back to Pop Century. I asked the CM for a cab and got a towncar that charged me $28. If it's not a yellow cab, don't get in!

You can exchange unused WDW tickets at DL but not the other way around.

In the OP's defense, customer service at Disney in general has declined greatly in the last 10 years. Unfortunately Disney seems to have a high turnover rate due to their low wages. At times it seems that most of us know more than the CMs that work there.

Although there are crowds gathering before the fireworks, a lot of people do try to leave the parks before they get started. I have often left in this departing crowd, but have NEVER been herded toward the exit by any CM. And yes, you can see the fireworks from many locations in the parks, but many people do like to get the choice areas in front of the Castle in the MK.

WDW Can take a lot of preparation and planning or can be taken in as casually and spontaneously as you like. If you had six months to plan your trip, it sounds like you let yourself down. If you were there during a busy period, you should have expected the resturants to be busy.

The Fort is not a KOA. There is much to do there. Arriving late at night is not good camping ettiquette, but dimly lit streets is more condusive to late night quiet hours. I don't know if they have a Campground in your western Disneyland, but if i were traveling 2000 miles to stay there, I would find out about it first.

I have no problem with your contention that tickets should be honored at other Disney properties, not that I personally would be visiting any of them, although I'm not sure Disney can be required to control the weather during your visit. I also agree that when you call, you too often talk to someone who is no where near the property, nor has ever seen it. That can be infuriating. I have never tried to take a taxi from the Fort, but have rented a car many times for cheaper than $80, with pickup and delivery to the campsite. I have also always received a KTTW (Room Key) card for each member of our party, including small children.

I'm not sure what to make of your comment on golf cart rental. First, I have not heard of a two day advance reservation, which may well be true. Second, your campsite location need not be the determining factor on the need for a GC. There is a wonderful internal bus system working there that can get you most everywhere a GC can...and cheaper, too.

In short, if there's a next time, whether it be WDW or Hershey PA, maybe you should do more planning. Find out more in advance, and plan to get there earlier in the day, so you can find your way around. And if you're on vacation, relax and enjoy.

When staying at The Fort, we have always used Alamo. They pick you up at the outpost and bring you back. The are located at the AAA car care center. They are extremely helpful and accomodating. I think it would probably be cheaper to rent a car then to take a cab, but I could be wrong.

We have checked in in the dark twice, and it will only happen again if it's an extreme emergency. My DH is really good at backing up the MH, but it's still nice to be able to see where you are going. Also, I don't like to bother people late at night.

Unfortunately we almost always check in late at every campground we go to. My husband and I both work somewhere that it is impossible to leave early and we love to camp on the weekends. We have our routine down, though, so we can be setup within 1/2 hr after backing in. It is difficult to do in the dark and some campgrounds are worse than others. At most other campgrounds especially on Friday nights, people are up late sitting around their campfires. Since there are no campfires at Fort Wilderness, I would assume it is an earlier crowd.
