We made it back early this morning after a wonderful vacation. My family loved Universal! We stayed for 6 nights and only left the property to shop for a few hours. We were never bored and wished we could stay longer.
Day1
We flew Spirit Airlines form Detroit Sunday and arrived in Orlando at 10am. I had arranged
FL Tours to pick us up at the airport and it worked out as planned. Our driver was at the end of the escalator as we made our way to the baggage area holding a sign with our name on it. He helped us with our luggage to the van. We opted for a van instead of a car even though we only had 4 in our party and were only carrying 2 full size bags, 2 carry on bags and a knapsack because my husband wanted to make sure that there was enough room for our groceries when we stopped during our arranged half hour stop. The van was much larger than what we needed. It was meant to carry 9 to 12 people. You live and learn and we will know for next time. This cost us $124 round trip with tax plus tip.
Our driver stopped at a Publix grocery store. We are Canadian, and if you have ever shopped for groceries in Canada you will notice a sharp rise in prices. This store was on par with the prices that I am use to but for some reason I was not expecting that. For example $3.95 for 4 muffins/apples $2.09 per lb.
I gave my husband a list and I had another list and we were easily able to get all our supplies that we needed with the exception of cereal that we forgot to pickup. The store stocked beer but they never carried liquor. I wanted some vodka or rye but that was not available. I had to settle for Mike's Hard Lemonade.
I had read that instead of renting a fridge, pick up Styrofoam coolers for about $2 each and ice to keep the perishables cool. We bought 2 bags of ice for 2 coolers but ended up throwing one bag away. One would have been plenty for both of the coolers.
When we pulled up to Hard Rock Hotel we were impressed. The grounds were lush and green and spotless. An employee from the hotel was at the van within seconds of pulling up to the building and they loaded our luggage on to a cart and put it in storage until our room was ready. I paid the driver of FL Tours the entire amount and he gave me a voucher with the date and time that they would pick us up to take us back to the airport when it was time to fly home.
Checking in to the hotel was done very quickly. Our room was not ready but they gave us our room keys so we could go to the park and use the keys for our Express Pass. On request they punched the cards so we could put them on our lanyards. They even put my purse in a safety box so I wouldn't have to carry it around all day. While I was checking in my husband and the boys explored the lobby and all the rock memorabilia and took several pictures. Man, did they have an incredible collection displayed.
The walk to the park was very impressive. Lots of greenery and flowering trees and shrubs along the path that followed a man made waterway. Apparently US was once a orange grove. My husband and I spent a lot of time admiring the grounds and reading the signs indicating the names and origins of the plants.
At the end of the path as you enter City Walk a gentleman checks the bags that you carry into the park. At that point you could turn left to go to IOA and if you look right you are basically right at US.
I knew that the kids would be more impressed with IOA so we made our way to the gates, enjoying the sites along the way. I remember reading that someone said that the US property was dirty and unkept compared to WDW. So untrue!
We walked up to IOA and stood in line to have our vouchers that I purchased for Viator exchanged for park tickets. It was a long wait. No fault of US but people had not done their research. Plenty of discussion was going on between the US employee and the entire travelling parties. I became quickly annoyed but when it was our turn at the wicket I showed them my picture ID and was told to walk to the front gates.
Every time you entered either US or IOA, you placed you ticket's bar code under the scanner and the adults then had to place their finger tip on a scanner to be allowed in.
Again I read that the theming in the parks was poor compared to WDW. My husband and I came with an open mind and decided that we were not going to compare US to WDW. The theming in our opinion, was very different but equally impressive.
We were making our way toward Thunder Falls for lunch but made a stop at Spiderman. With our Express Pass we were able to walk right on without a wait and this was the trend that occurred throughout our stay. You did this by entering the Express line and a TM would scan your room key's bar code and usually closer to the loading zone another TM would double check your room key. I did feel guilty by bypassing everyone else waiting in line but I am telling you that is the way to go. Much less stress especially when you are waiting in line with children exposed to the elements (very hot and wet during this trip).
Spiderman was great and became my youngest 2nd favorite ride. So much fun!
My oldest son saw the Hulk and couldn't be persuaded to wait to ride so my husband decided to go on with him. My youngest was daunted by the size and was to short to ride it anyways so we rode Spiderman again. We met up again within a few minutes. Got to love those Express Passes! My husband was not expecting the severity on the launch of the Hulk but enjoyed it and my 9 year old loved it. Hulk was his favorite ride.
We made our way over to Thunder Falls purchasing the refillable cups from a vendor along the way. They were buy 2 get one free. The cost was $6.99 for each so for 3 we paid $14.89 with tax. Each refill was $.85 that is with tax and I was very please to see that lemonade was included so I could limit the kids sugar intake. Well worth the money that we spent on them ( just make sure that you buy the red ones not the blue- blue is for the meal deal and don't work the same way).
At Thunder Falls we decided to split 2 chicken wraps between the 4 of us because we were not extremely hungry and it worked great. Each cost $8.99 and was served with fries. The meal was a very good quality and we all enjoyed it. Our total bill was $19.15 without drinks (we filled up our cups prior to eating)
It started raining quite hard when we were done (sometimes between 1 or 2 pm) so I thought that we would try WWOHP. No wait to get in. The area was breathtaking and the attention to detail was unreal. We rushed to FJ and I could not believe it but the posted wait time was 30 mins. We carried a small bag with ponchos/sunscreen/refillable cups ect. so we had to use the locker. No line but it was crowded in the locker area. I quickly figured out how to use the (as long as you read the prompts you will be fine) and we were off to stand in line.
The line constantly moves and there is lots to see so really only felt like a few minutes that we were waiting. Again the castle theming is amazing. Once you get to Dumbledore's office you quickly head into a area where you see a hologram of Harry and his friends (if you hit this area at the right time fake snow will fall from the ceiling onto the waiting area) and then on to the sorting hat and you are at the area where you are seated on the ride.
Since the seats are without a floor, I sat on my children's flip flop and I curled my toes around mine and we were fine. You sit side by side in a cart that fits 4. You can't see each other. It is very similar to Soaring in WDW with more movement, at one part you are almost 3/4 of the way upside down. It was incredible and I have never seen such a high tech ride!
My nine year old son and I went (my youngest was not interested) on Dueling Dragons and we chose the blue side. I thought it was like a typical roller coaster. Then we all went on the Hypogryph (spelling?). Very cure and again good theming. Relatively intense for a children's roller coaster but all the kids seemed to love it.
My family proceeded into Seuss Land. It is bright and fun! We did the Merry Go Round-like ride and the boys and I did the Cat in the Hat. My husband sat this one out because the sign said spinning. It was not spinning in my opinion, just swung around and told him we would have to all do that one again. Both very cute.
We were tired and went back to the hotel because it was approaching 4 pm. We went to the desk and were assigned room 6091 garden view. I did mention that I was an All Access Member but they were completely full so no upgrades available. I kind of expected that upgrades would be impossible but it was worth asking. I also couldn't find my ticket to retrieve my purse but the gentleman behind the desk was able to retrieve it and I showed photo ID to verify I was who I said I was. Arrangements were make to have the luggage brought up to our room (we received it within 20 mins)
We took the elevator for the lobby (which was located on the 3rd floor- very different) to the 6th floor. Once you get off the elevator the room branches off in 4 different directions so the walk to the elevator was not to long from any of the rooms.
Our room was very well laid out and just the right size that we were not tripping over one another. The bathroom had a small pedestal sink with a mirror and outside a spacious counter with another sink and mirror. The refreshment counter in the room had decaf and regular coffee as well as tea. I wish I knew this and I would not have packed a kettle to make tea. We never took the key for the refreshments so I am unsure what was supplied. There was a small safe in the closet that enabled you to type in your own code to open and close it. I found it handy to store our wallets, extra cash and passports. The room also had an ironing board and iron.
OUr room overlooked another well kept area where the boat loading area was. We were quite pleased with our view. Best of all we never saw one ant which was my biggest worry. Another thing I was concerned with was the noise that some people have stated. I thought the hotel was quiet throughout our stay with the exception of some yelling in the hallway early in the morning lasting only a minute our first night.
We had dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe in City Walk and again were in awe of the memorabilia displayed especially the stain glass windows and the painted ceiling over the bar area. The restaurant was quite loud but again that is to be expected. I ordered a Mediterranean burger and my husband had a SOB burger both were $14.75 each. My 9 year old had BBQ drum sticks and my 7 year old had chicken fingers and both of their meals were $7.50 each which included fries and their chocolate milks. Our non alcoholic drinks were $2.99 each. The total bill was $53.76 but due to the fact that I was an All Access member I had $20 preloaded on the card when I ordered it so I used it toward the meal. I found that the burger was "too meaty" if that makes any sense. I am not a huge meat eater and the paddy was way to thick. I know this is very strange but that is just my opinion. My husband loved this burger. I would defiantly go back again but order something other than a burger. You can't fault a restaurant for picking the wrong thing on the menu.
After dinner we were exhausted from the early start and the excitement of the day so we called it a night.
I will upload some of the pictures that we took that day.
