Fantasmic In September

Fantasmic will be showing twice during our stay at WDW in September. i understand that the crowds are just crazy, but my wife and i haven't seen Fantasmic since our honeymoon in 2001 and we want to see it again.

everytime we go to WDW, we end up skipping because of the crowds, but i was thinking that this time, we are going to head back to the hotel in the afternoon and come back to HS JUST to see Fantasmic.

is it truly silly to show up 2 hours ahead of the show, or do we really need to be in line that far ahead? i think i can handle waiting a long time in line if that is the only thing we are doing in the park that evening and i haven't been walking around a lot before.

i would appreciate any info you could give. thanks!

;)

1- Can be. (See #3.)

2- You would not be waiting IN LINE for the 2 hours.
They open the theater at about 90 minutes before show-time, and you can
go in, choose your seats, and sit (and snack, if you like) for the remainder of the time.

It is very likely that as your actual dates get closer, Disney will add performaces.
Likely a second show of the evening. That second show might be easier to see (though not always.)

3- No one can predict exactly how large the crowds will be or how early you should go to find a seat for Fantasmic! on any given day.
It has totally to do with the whim of the crowd at DHS on that day, and the general crowd LEVELS.
How much time you wish to "invest" in waiting is a personal decision. We have never done the formal Dinner Package, and have always seen the show (dozens of times).

(Take all of these as "average" numbers, sometimes the crowd will be MUCH greater and the theater can fill up much sooner.)

VERY Busy days:
If you go to the first show of the evening (or "only" show that evening), if you arrive about 75-120 minutes before show-time, you can sit just about anywhere.
45-60 minutes before: Outside seats likely still available.
30-40 Minutes: will vary between seats at edges and rear of theater to SRO or even "closed" to further guests.

Yes, the lines can start forming over 2 hours before the show-time.

At about 120 min. before show-time, they will open the gates and begin allowing guests in line to approach the theater seating.

(See my maps. It is a very long ramp.)

They will continue with the lines of guests walking in until the theater is completely filled or the show begins, whichever comes first.

They will "hold open" the Dining Pkg. seating area ONLY for guests who have the Dining Pkg. voucher.

BUT, if the theater is over-crowded (a very likely scenario in 2009)
then, at about 35 min. before show-time,
the CM's will cease holding the DP area open for DP voucher guests
and, at that time, begin to allow ANYONE
who still needs a seat to sit in (any seats left) the DP area.

Busy days:
If you go to the first show of the evening (or "only" show that evening), if you arrive about 75-120 minutes before show-time, you can sit just about anywhere.
60 minutes before: Good seats
25-35 Minutes: will vary between seats at edges and rear of theater to SRO or even "closed" to further guests. (The crowd of "last-minute" arrivals can be slow to get seated before show-time.)

Off-Season (not busy days):
You should be OK to enter by 30-50 minutes before, but you'll likely be seated to the outer edges, and/or way at the back.

Dining Package:
New Dining Pkg. Entrance was added in mid-Sept. 2009.
If you do the Fantasmic! Dinner Pkg. you still SHOULD enter by AT LEAST 35-45 minutes ("safer" at 45 minutes) before show-time and still be guaranteed "pretty good" seats (not my "first choice" area, but fine), regardless of crowd-levels. Remember, the DP is only valid for the first show of the evening, if there are 2 or more. If you do have DP and you spy some seats outside the DP "reserved" area, you are free to choose to sit anywhere outside that area you like, no problem.

If there are TWO Fantasmic! shows in one evening, the second one will have lower crowd level than the first one. You can arrive a bit later (generally, 45-60 minutes) and still find a seat.
(Some say less advance time will be needed, but I'm cautious.)

Be aware that the second show waiting area will LOOK like the show is "too crowded".
That's because they HOLD the 2nd crowd outside the theater while the CMs CLEAN it after the first crowd has exited.

Then, they will let those waiting together in that big group IN... all at once, and there will be PLENTY of room.

(The theater seats over 7,000 guests.)

When you enter the theater, there will be CMs along the way directing the flow of traffic, but you may (if you are early enough to have a choice) simply choose any open seats in the theater to be your own.
If you want to exit more quickly, choose a seat farther back and to towards audience-right.
If you want to be immersed in the show (and sometimes, immersed in water-mist, if the wind is blowing "in") choose a seat towards the front.

We like to eat our evening meal while waiting for Fantasmic! to start.
You can bring in items from the counter-service places in DHS, or they DO have concession stands at the rear of the theater serving "baseball stadium-type" food and drinks. Yes, even beer, sold strictly ONE-at-a-time, one-only-to-a-person, so a single person can't go and buy beer for other members of a group... all guests wanting to buy a beer must be present in-person at the counter.
We have a hot dog, maybe a pretzel, later some popcorn or cotton candy (Disney Health Food).

Click above for the "menu."

But, nothing ALWAYS happens the same way at WDW.
I would be cautious about assuming anything, as WDW has been experiencing
unpredictable (sometimes record-breaking) crowds even over the past couple of years.

If its IMPORTANT to see a particular show, arriving a bit too early will be better than arriving a bit late.

If its not a really big deal to see a particular show, you may certainly arrive closer to show-time and just see if you get lucky.
Many folks do.

I would not assume the second show is less croweded. We did the second show last week and it was horribly packed.

People started standing in line for before the first show even started and since the shows were only and hour and half apart they didn't let us in till 10pm for a 10:30pm show...the line took the whole half hour to get sitted and such. there was some seats avaible but it was a zoo...

First show is so much better since you can get in and find a seat and relax versus standing in a mass of humanity for an hour or more.

The first show gets over at 9:30 but it takes them a half hour to all get out so that is why we didn't get in before 10pm.

I have no desire to do second show at all. We only did it so we could ride TSM that evening since park close was at 10pm.

How will the crowds be in Sept? (well when comparing it to the summer months when there are two showing a night.

will places to eat be opened AFTER the show? (like pizza planet?0

robo, thank you SO much for taking the time to answer my question in such detail.

i didn't realize that you could get into the theatre that early. by the way, i think your maps are the best!

You're welcome, and thanks for the kind words about my maps!

Say, is your name really Jasper Dale, or are you just a fan of "Road to Avonlea?"

If you arrive early and select your seats, can one or two people from a party of 7 leave and come back with treats from outside the theatre?

Yes, and no.

I don't recommend LEAVING the theater to grab snacks.
There's a very real possibility that whomever leaves, may not get back in.

But they do sell snacks INSIDE the theater.
(And, you can BRING them with you as you first arrive at the theater.)

you take the chance that the stadium will be closed for further people if its reached capacity.

I was planning on doing the same thing during our trip in December- take a break back at our resort, then head to the Studios just for Fantasmic, which is at 6:30 during our week.
Since we're staying at POFQ with easy access to Downtown Disney, I plan to pick up some sandwiches at Earl of Sandwich and bring in a picnic dinner to eat while we wait. I've done this before and it's worked out very well, especially since the food at the Studios always seems to make me sick.

In March, we got in line for the first show about 45 minutes before showtime, and we stood for about 15 minutes before the line ever began to move.

Maybe something happened that evening to cause them to open the theatre much later than normal? :confused3

Oops, just checked my trip report notes, and we got in line at 7:20 for 8:30 show (70 minutes before show time). The line started to move at 7:30.

The crowds for F! will be similar in Sept to what they are in the summer. There really isn't that much of a slow time for F! anymore since it only shows a few nights a week. September means free dining and value season. Value travelers tend to want to get more bang for thier buck and take advantage of EMH's to get more hours in the parks (since they close earlier than summer) if the F! showing is on an EMH night it is going to be very very crowded in that park all day. If there is not an EMH that night it will be crowded but not as much as a madhouse. I would go with Robo's suggestion arrive 60-90 min ahead of showtime if you want a seat.

It really depends on the exact day and the hours but that time of year F! happens right at closing and all the restraunts will be closed afterward with the park closing happening at some point during or shortly after the F! show.

On my week-- the nights fantasmic is showing it is not EMH- so we should be good to go on that night

So... if we left the Biergarten on the boat to DHS at 6, do y'all think we'd make the 8:00 show alright, or are we pushing it? This is a Thursday on one of those 2 performances-a-week Sept shows. Fantasmic aren't on EMH nights.

Thanks, y'all! :)

3- Fantasmic aren't on EMH nights.

1- Sorry.
2- Yup. (But, you can always give it a TRY. ;) )
3- F! is virtually never shown on a DHS PM EMH night in the "off season" anymore.

(Biergarten is a very long way from the International Gateway to begin-with.)

My wife and I am huge fans of the Kevin Sullivan / Disney TV versions of the stories.

We especially like "Mr. Dale" as one of the great characters.

This discussion reminds me of a night on our trip in April when were on the boat headed from Epcot to DHS at 8pm, not planning to see the 8:30 Fantasmic. But there was a family on the boat that really thought they were going to make it. They kids were flipping out, the parents were berating the captain at every stop along the way, and ignoring him he told them they weren't going to make the 8:30 show. Then once the boat arrived at DHS (clearly after 8:30), they were still impatient at security and the entrance, thinking they were going to get in. Fantasmic had started and I'm sure the theater had been full for some time. It was just painful to witness it all, but there was no reasoning with this group. Not sure if they waited for the 10pm show or not. I lost track of them, thankfully.

We are also going to WDW in September. Where can we find the dates and times for Fantasmic! during our trip?
