Fantasmic in October

We're planning to be in HS on 10/23. Josh at easywdw is forecasting this as a crowd level 4 day.

We have two kiddos (8 & 3). We aren't going to be on the dining plan. Would you do the Fantasmic dinner package? It seems like too much food and too much money, but I don't know that I want to sink an hour or more into waiting for the show.

What would you do?

Ok - first time in a long time and first time with my new account so pardon me for jumping on this thread...

For whatever reason, we have never done Fantasmic:confused3. We are, however, doing it next trip, which is in 2 weeks. We have a ressie at HBD at 6:45. Do you think that will leave us enough time to get in, finish dinner and still line up and get a seat for the late show at 10? Thanks for the help.

No problem at all. :thumbsup2
I'd arrive at the F! gates by about 9:15.

Have fun!

:welcome: back to the DISboards!

I wouldn't do the dinner, the reserved seating is not any better than a lot of the other areas.

I would wait in line to get in. Not sure it needs to be an hour if the crowds are low. Just keep an eye on the line and jump in when it starts to build.

I do the dining package. I'm a firm line avoider :rotfl2:

The seating was fine and we waltzed in about 30 minutes before show time, had our pick of seats in the assigned seating section, grabbed some popcorn/cotton candy, and hung out until show time.

Not sure if ROBO has kids...but that may factor in here...just how good at waiting is your youngest? we are doing the Fantasmic lunch package so we can have a nice midday rest and my three year old can nap during/after...we can grab CS/cart for dinner...this way we arrive about 25 minutes before the show without much fuss.

However, I have wondered if on a 1-4 day at HS would an hour still be needed for lining up?

I have also heard some people say they eat dinner while waiting that hour for the show...not sure if that works timing wise for you...

We will be there that same week!:hippie:

I want to do the F! Dining as well. I would like to have dinner at the Brown Derby then do F! @ 7:30 (since it's at 7:30 every nite that week.)

What time would you suggest we eat? It'll just be my sister and myself, both 30-somethings.

TIA!!

We went the last week of oct. last year, with our kids, age 7 and 9. We did not want to buy he dinner package. Our plan was to eat at the quick service places on the street outside of the fantastic theater, we figured that if the line looked crazy we would bring the food with us. But it wasn't too full at all, there were people lined up waiting to get in but really not that many so we ordered and ate dinner and then killed some time but finally just headed in to the theater a little less Han an hour before show time. We were in the main section with great seats, there were still plenty of seats left 30 minutes before show time. Last year they had a pre show with a couple of comedians running around the audience for 30 minutes before hand which the kids loved and passed the time very fast.

It depends on how tired she is and whether she gets restless (bad!) or zoned out (good!), lol. We'll try giving her a smartphone to play with.

If it's going to be an hour or more, I like the idea of maybe bringing food!

They also sell snacks - pretzels, popcorn, soda and the like - inside the stadium. So a couple of you could wait on the benches while someone brings the little one up to get snacks, hit the bathroom, or otherwise wander around a bit before the show starts to kill some time.

DH usually goes to wait about 1 hour before and I bring the kids an meet him when there's about 30 min left. Works great.

That can work sometimes.

But, it is a very chancy proposition on many busy nights.

Not recommended unless you are very sure how to judge the crowd level that performance.

No one can predict exactly how large the crowds will be or how early you should go to find a seat for Fantasmic! on any given day.
It has totally to do with the whim of the crowd at DHS on that day, and the general crowd levels.
How much time you wish to "invest" in waiting is a personal decision. We have never done the F! Dinner Package, and have always seen the show (dozens of times).

(Take all of these as "average" numbers, sometimes the crowd will be MUCH greater and the theater can fill up much sooner.)

VERY Busy days:
If you go to the first show of the evening (or "only" show that evening), if you arrive about 75-120 minutes before show-time, you can sit just about anywhere.
45-60 minutes before: Outside seats likely still available.
30-40 Minutes: will vary between seats at edges and rear of theater to SRO or even "closed" to further guests.

Yes, the lines can start forming over 2 hours before the show-time on a very busy day.

At about 90-120 min. before show-time, they will open the gates and begin allowing guests in line to approach the theater seating.

(See my maps. It is a very long ramp.)

They will continue with the lines of guests walking in until the theater is completely filled or the show begins, whichever comes first.

They will "hold open" the Dining Pkg. seating area ONLY for guests who have the Dining Pkg. voucher.

BUT, if the theater is over-crowded
then, at about 30-35 min. before show-time,
the CM's will cease holding the DP area open for DP voucher guests
and, at that time, begin to allow ANYONE
who still needs a seat to sit in (any seats left) the DP area.

Busy days:
If you go to the first show of the evening (or "only" show that evening), if you arrive about 75-120 minutes before show-time, you can sit just about anywhere.
60 minutes before: Good seats
25-35 Minutes: will vary between seats at edges and rear of theater to SRO or even "closed" to further guests. (The crowd of "last-minute" arrivals can be slow to get seated before show-time.)

Off-Season (not busy days):
You should be OK to enter by 30-50 minutes before, but you'll likely be seated to the outer edges, and/or way at the back.

Dining Package:
New Dining Pkg. Entrance was added in mid-Sept. 2009.
If you do the Fantasmic! Dinner Pkg. you still SHOULD enter by AT LEAST 35-45 minutes ("safer" at 45 minutes) before show-time and still be guaranteed "pretty good" seats (not my "first choice" area, but fine), regardless of crowd-levels. Remember, the DP is only valid for the first show of the evening, if there are 2 or more. If you do have DP and you spy some seats outside the DP "reserved" area, you are free to choose to sit anywhere outside that area you like, no problem.

If there are TWO Fantasmic! shows in one evening, the second one will have lower crowd level than the first one. You can arrive a bit later (generally, 45-60 minutes) and still find a seat.
(Some say less advance time will be needed, but I'm cautious.)

Be aware that the second show waiting area will LOOK like the show is "too crowded".
That's because they HOLD the 2nd crowd outside the theater while the CMs CLEAN it after the first crowd has exited.

Then, they will let those waiting together in that big group IN... all at once, and there will be PLENTY of room.

(The theater seats over 7,000 guests.)

When you enter the theater, there will be CMs along the way directing the flow of traffic, but you may (if you are early enough to have a choice) simply choose any open seats in the theater to be your own.
If you want to exit more quickly, choose a seat farther back and to towards audience-right.
If you want to be immersed in the show (and sometimes, immersed in water-mist, if the wind is blowing "in") choose a seat towards the front.

We like to eat our evening meal while waiting for Fantasmic! to start.
You can bring in items from the counter-service places in DHS, or they DO have concession stands at the rear of the theater serving "baseball stadium-type" food and drinks. Yes, even beer, sold strictly ONE-at-a-time, one-only-to-a-person, so a single person can't go and buy beer for other members of a group... all guests wanting to buy a beer must be present in-person at the counter.
We have a hot dog, maybe a pretzel, later some popcorn or cotton candy (Disney Health Food).

Click above for the "menu."

But, nothing ALWAYS happens the same way at WDW.
I would be cautious about assuming anything, as WDW has been experiencing
unpredictable (sometimes record-breaking) crowds even over the past couple of years.

If its IMPORTANT to see a particular show, arriving a bit too early will be better than arriving a bit late.

If its not a really big deal to see a particular show, you may certainly arrive closer to show-time and just see if you get lucky.
Many folks do.

When we were there in December we could buy two alcoholic beverages at a time, not just one. Has this changed since then?
