Excuse me lady, but, get off my scooter!

Do you stay on your scooter while riding the bus?

Next to where you park your scooter on the bus, there is a sign that says if you are on a scooter, you need to transfer to a regular seat. Also if you rent a scooter they tell you not to stay on the scooter while using other transportation.

My current scooter is a very small, old, go go, 3 wheel scooter.

I parked it on the bus and sat in a regular seat. The bus started to fill up and this lady looked at my scooter, said "oh here's a seat" and sat down on my scooter.

I leaned over and tapped her on the arm and said "Excuse me lady but you need to get off my scooter. Don't you think if it was safe to sit on the scooter on the bus, I would be sitting in it?"

Well the lady got very upset and glared at me all the way back to the hotel.

Was I wrong to not let her sit on my scooter or should I have stayed on the scooter myself??

After that incident, every time I rode the bus, I tilted the seat back forward, and had the driver lock it into place, so that they could not tilt the seat and sit down.

I was just wondering what your opinion was of this.

Safe travels everyone!

That made my day. I am still laughing. Why on earth would an adult do something like that? My husband uses an EVC wheelchair all time now. He is not able to transfer to regular seat. In the old days we also hooked a folded walker to the seat of his EVC. If there was a ride he could go on he got off EVC , using walker to get to ride. ( for rides you can not stay on EVC). Numerous times we have come back to see unknown people sitting on his EVC. Oh, but they always had a reason-- I was tired, it was just sitting there, I was going to move it out of rain-sun-weather. Husband was nice not me I said you think you can give me parking spot so I can go get in your car? Seems fair to me that is your thinking-- so get the **** off and move along before I actually get mad. See why I was laughing-- been there done that. Word to wise always take key out you just never know.

It takes all kinds but I can hear me saying "Maam, Excuse me.........." :rotfl:

Wow, what a story! We had someone try and take DD's (manual) wheelchair last trip. She had transferred on to the ride and then as we were getting off somebody was trying to take it, thinking it was a courtesy chair! Granted, her chair is black, but it's a high end chair and it has no arm rests, a special cushion, etc.

I don't think there's anything you can do but politely let the person know it's personal property.

Wow, what nerve. During spring break, I had one guy stand on the base of my scooter. I asked him not to and had no problem. I always fold the back rest down on to the seat. I always take my key out as well.

I also learned the hard way. If you are able to transfer to a seat..... do so. I was on the bus secured on my scooter. The bus made a turn and so did I, scooter and all. My scooter (Pride GoGo traveler HD) tipped over with me on it. Other than being in total shock, banging up my elbow and leg, I was ok. I will now always transfer to a regular seat. For those who can not transfer, make sure you are really secure.

That story is hilarious!

We found out this last trip from one of the CM's (while he was strapping DH's EVC in the bus) that if DH did not "feel comfortable" transferring to another seat he didn't have to and they would put a seatbelt on him. DH is an above the knee amputee and didn't have the prosthetic on. One CM made him transfer out of the EVC and DH almost fell (the bus was a bit full and a little 5-year-old boy that wasn't being watched and when DH pivoted to sit the little boy was right there). Luckily no one got hurt. After that DH stated he felt more comfortable on the scooter.

I am always amazed at people not understanding the idea of personal property. I routinely have to ask people to stop touching when I am in lines and such - I am not a "lean rail"!!!!!

I always try to be polite the first time, but yes, when people are rude and don't listen, I may get a little snarky.

I had someone get very mad at me the other day when I refused their assistance. I tour Disneyland solo sometimes, and I use a manual wheelchair full time. I have awesome biceps and tris (my wife is very impressed ;) ), and I can get myself up hills in Soarin and Space Mountain. Yet, routinely, people just grab the back of my chair and start pushing me! Someone the other day just got mad me at me when I said "Thanks, I got it." Then when he said "No, i"ll push" I had to ask "Please, stop touching me."

I thought I was polite, but you would think that I had just said something rude about his mother or something!

And to answer the original question, yes, you should transfer to a regular seat if you can on a bus. And that woman was totally out of line.

It always amazes me when people do things like this.

I have had people use me as a leaning post too and I hate it. If it is family or friends that's one thing, but a perfect stranger, it gives me the creeps! Nothing like someone in your personal space.

OP I don't blame you for telling her to get off your scooter. It's not hers, so get her rear off of it. I would have done the same.

if it wasn't safe then you did the right thing - seat up for now on so it doesn't temp someone else then you don't have to worry

On our last trip we had a packed bus at closing and someone politely ASKED if they could sit on my ECV. I said sure, I know how tired people are after a day at WDW. It didn't seem like a big thing. It did make me feel at bit guilty for not sitting on it myself though.

Some people will do anything. We use a special needs stroller for our son and one night while waiting for the parade in the HC viewing area I sat down on the ground next to my son ( who was sitting in the stroller). I noticed the stroller moving a bit and looked up to see a woman hod sat her child ( maybe about 2 yr old) on the sun shade part of our stroller. I asked her to please get her child off and she looked me dead in the eye and said " he's not hurting anything". I told her the second time to get her child off my stroller. She again refused. I found a CM walking by and asked for help. The was great. I thought that she would have asked the lady to get her kid off my stroller, but all she did was ask who the lady and child where with. She said it was just the two of them so she asked to see their GAC. When she could not show one she had to leave the area :lmao:. It seams that not only was she rude, she had ducked under the roped off section when the CM was not looking.

Yeah, been there and done that. I've also had 2 teenaged boys standing and bouncing on the deck of my rental EVC during Pop Warner on the way to POR one night. I have never wanted to jerk a knot in a stranger's child's tail and pull their head through it so bad in my life.

I am about to get my own personal ECV and I pity anyone that even looks at the scooter like they want to touch it, let alone sit or stand on it. I saw a sticker being sold on a mobility scooter parts website yesterday that sums up my sentiments exactly, though it's not really that Disney friendly.

It said, "Don't make me get up and kick your ***." :lmao:

Of course I won't put that on my scooter, but I can still think of it and giggle quietly to myself occasionally. ;)

I had a guy sit on my scooter when I was on Kali River Rapids he was a jerk I was polite and all he did was look a met I had to tell him to get off then he blocked me from leaving I asked nice he didn't move so I pushed thru him.

I have also had people lean on my scooter hold onto the back while I was riding, stand on the back, I even had a woman try to sit an infant in my front basket. I was waiting for the parade one time and a woman stood in front of me leaning against the front of my scooter. A CM came right over and asked if she was in our party I said no and the CM made her move. There are times I just don't understand what people are thinking

I just might have to order that sticker!

I have a second degree black belt in TKD. One of the things I miss the most is going to classes and moving up the ranks. It really hurts to have to give things up. Now I am stuck in a scooter or wheelchair, can't exercise, have to get steroid epidural spinal injections, and so I have gained 50 lbs.

I also want to get a sticker that says "My weight did not cause me to be in this scooter, being unable to exercise and having to use a scooter, has caused the weight." (yeah I am still upset with Whoopie and her snarky coment about overweight people on scooters at Epcot, that if they got off the scooter and walked they would not need the scooter.)

I also wanted to tell the lady on the bus, "I will gladly give you my scooter, my seat, my 4 herniated disks, my hip bursitis, my epidural spinal injections, and gladly stand where you are. Alas it is not meant to be..."

Thanks for all your kind words. The current scooter is just to small and unstable to sit on it while on the bus or monorail.

I used to have a Go-Go scooter and it was very light and susceptible to tipping if the Disney bus turned a corner too fast. I would sit on the bus across from the scooter, but I couldn't walk from the scooter to the seat, so I would have to drive the scooter to my seat, then the bus driver would have to put the scooter into its proper spot. My current scooter is wider, longer and heavier. I feel confident sitting on it for the bus ride. Some bus drivers insist I take a seat off the scooter. OK, whatever is asked, I will do.

I haven't had any incident with my scooter and other people that is worth writing about. Only once coming out of ToT, there were people with their stuff all over my scooter and "Dad" sitting on my seat, while they were re-arranging their child's stroller. I was somewhat annoyed, but they didn't seem to have made any mess, so it was not worth a confrontation. :)

I can't even imagine sitting on someone elses property! It's a shame that you had to deal with it at all but Kudos to you on the way you handled it!!!

I once came out of Liberty Tree Tavern to find a couple of kids jumping off the seat of my ecv while the parents just watched. When I said, "Excuse me, that is mine." The parents just said they didn't know it belonged to anyone. Yeah, it has a sign on the front that says that my other vehicle is now a pumpkin with a picture of Cinderella's coach and a special lime green seat cover with blinged out Mickey heads (which I later discovered was missing some of the crystals!) Yeah, Disney justs leaves ECVs around for your kids entertainment!

I always take my ECV inside the restaurants now--never leave it unattended.

I have had this happen a couple of times, most get upset when you ask them to move. We now lay the seat back down. People still get mad when they see you get off and take a seat, I don't get it. I have also had several people take their huge double folding strollers and lay it on the back of the scooter then lean on it, they get mad when you ask them not to. Others think it is there to lay their shopping bags on.

Something like this happens on every trip. I was hoping not to have to use an ECV for our Dec trip, but depending on what goes on with my foot, I might have to.

Years ago my Mom came back into the movie theater in the middle of the movie. She went to sit in the first seat she saw empty til her eyes ajusted to the dark.Mom was so embarassed when the lady who owned the wheelchair said"hey thats my wheelchair". Mom will not go back to that theater and does not like to go alone into anyplace dark.

I had a lady get mad at me because I would not let her use DHs powerchair as a seat when DH was sitting on the floor talking with our youngest DD.She gave me dirty looks as she sat on a nearby bench. Her Son came up to us later saying how sorry he is for his Moms behavior and explained their Mom s disability.

A friend of mine has a cloth he put on his seat that feels wet to the touch that he puts on his scooter-seat when he moves to the bus seat.He enjoys watching folks touch it when they try to take his seat.
