Here now. Just observed a guy who clearly needs those very small foldable chairs.. Think camera tripod type. Guy was very large. The chair is the one that is 12 to 18 inche, smaller than umbrella. Manager came up to him and said it was not allowed and they would have to hold it or he would have to take it to car. Guy was swaying while waiting to get in. Sad :(

according to Disneys own website.. you can use the cane chairs at the parks.. but from personal experience they will argue the point with you.. I Had trouble getting through security with mine a couple of years ago.. they told me to get a wheelchair.. I said if they pay for it , as I dont need a wheelchair.. but I need my cane.. after a supervisor came along , asked whats going on.. and said.. oh yes you can use it. .. right hand doesnt know what the left hand is doing.!!

This doesn't sound like a cane chair though. This sounds like an actual small folding chair which are not allowed in the parks at all.

The ADA does not require that Disney allow just anything to be used.

Just because they allow the use of cane chairs as canes doesn't mean they have to allow guests to set them up as chairs and stop to sit wherever they feel like it.

You are correct. and saying that, once I got through security. no CM ever said anything to me when I did use the chair part.. it really is hit or miss on the day and the CM's:-)

Officially, Disney is not supposed to let people sit on folding chairs of any kind at WDW - imagine if everyone brought in a chair to sit on for a parade, there was a fire, and then what? The walkways would be littered with obstacles, and people wouldn't be able to get out. Plunking yourself down willy-nilly leads to safety issues, and Disney has to maintain a level of safety for all.

If the guy was already "swaying" while "waiting to get in", I'm afraid the folding chair isn't going to be that much help for him. How is he going to get through lines? Set up the chair, sit down for 10 seconds, get up, move the chair, sit down for 10 seconds, rinse-and-repeat..... How is the folding chair going to help him walk around the parks?

I am sure tha Disney is within their rights to deny the folding stool. I would like to address the idea that the stool does not provide enough relief. I suffer from severe knee pain and have one artificial knee. From my experience the pain is much, much worse while standing still in one place. Moving about the parks would still hurt but it is more bearable because as you move you are able to distribute the pain among different points instead of concentrating it on one pressure point. The need to sit, stand, move in line would be awkward but I would not deny anyone who has found a way to deal with the dehabilitating pain and helps makes life a little more bearable.

I do understand Disney's rule but just want to point out how this device could be a huge help.

Where is that at? What bldg. if you don't mind..We're thinking of possibly staying here next year.. T.I.A.

Did you accidentally post on the wrong thread? This is about using folding chairs at Epcot.

If the guy was very large, as the OP says, I'd be more worried about a) whether a folding chair would support his weight over a continued period of use and b) what he'd do if he was sitting on it and it collapsed under him?

I have arthritis in both knees. If I went over for any reason, apart from hurting like hell if I landed on my knees, I wouldn't be able to get up again without help from a third party (or two) or something to lean my weight on. My knees can't bend much beyond 90° so I can't kneel or crouch, either. So, I can imagine someone even larger than me having a huge problem.

I gave up walking the parks on a cane in the same way that I can't manage our two local shopping malls without frequent rests as it feels after a while as if my knee joints are grinding together and it's very painful. So, I hire a scooter now. No more worries about frequent rest breaks and we don't need to worry about finding seating for all of us together as I already have one. I just use my cane for rides which I can't take the ECV into (eg Pirates).
