Embarasssing Question re: Chicken

I can't believe I'm actually asking this...and I'm sorry it's a bit TMI, but if anyone knows, it's you all!

I have a problem eating chicken from certain restaurants - grilled, chicken fingers, whatever. I eat it, and 30 minutes later it's stomach cramps and I'm in the bathroom. Applebees is the #1 culprit - it's happened on multiple trips in different states, so I know it wasn't isolated food poisoning. And there are some nicer (not high end, but decent) local places that do it to me, as well. I spoke to a friend who owns a restaurant and she said it's likely some sort of preservative in their chicken that does it to me. Interestingly, it's not places you'd expect - like greasy McDonald's or KFC. And I can eat MSG and not have that affect me (unless I eat a ton), so I don't think it's that. Chicken on the bone always seems fine (though I've never tried it at Applebee's...)

At any rate! I don't eat chicken out at a restaurant I'm unfamiliar with unless I know I'll be home right away. So our first trip to Disney in Jan 2015 I avoided chicken, but we only had 1.5 park days. Now I'm going for longer in Jan 2016, and while there are a lot of non-chicken options, I might just want a grilled chicken sandwich at some point in 6 days!! :) Is there anyone out there in Disboard-land who happens to have a weird chicken issue like me? Has Disney chicken in particular ever caused anyone problems regularly?

Again, sorry for the TMI, but I didn't know who else to ask!! :o

I can't help other then to say that my husband has this issue with all meat but fish. It takes less then 30 minutes to get to the cramp stage. He doesn't try any meat at this point because it just isn't worth the pain. There are enough other options especially since he quite likes fish, that it doesn't overly bother him most of the time.

There are places that have chicken on the bone, like Flame Tree BBQ and Cosmic Rays. Good luck finding what works for you!

I would stick to Flame Tree, and Cosmic Rays, btu if you look at menus before you go, you will see that several TS restarants offer roasted chicken that is on the bone. IIRC the Spirit of Aloha has roasted chicken tha is on teh bone as well, so it's there.

Are you sure it's the chicken and not some sauce or Other item causing the problem? Cheese and mayonnaise can do that to me.

On the bright side, you're never far away from a restroom at WDW.:duck:

At the Studios, Fairfax Fare down by Twilight Zone and Rock N Roller Coaster (ride before you eat, trust me) has a very delicious half chicken meal with baked beans and cole slaw. First time I got it, my husband and I had just twenty minutes to our FastPass nearby (hence the warning) and I barely made it halfway through since we had to dash off. Next time, I made sure we had an entire hour so I could relax and eat the whole thing. And yes, it took that long for me. Best quick service meal at Disney World, in my opinion.

I dont do chicken on the bone and I like my chicken well done. Unfortunately 2 trips ago we got raw, pink chicken twice ( once at Ohana's and once at Kona)-

Yes, it's been since college (some 20 years ago now) and it's always chicken but in various preparations/with or without sauces/etc. Mexican doesn't bother me, grease doesn't, etc etc.

Super weird (and sad) Veuve Cliquot champagne does it, too! But ONLY Veuve! I drink plenty of champagne (from cheap to fancy) and am fine. But the 3 times I've ingested Veuve, a few hours later I'm having issues.

Thanks, all, for your opinions on my embarrassing question!! DH was like, "I can't believe you asked that!!!"

The good news is if it does happen, it's over pretty quick and some medicine will make me feel fine. Guess if I decide to try my luck, I'll do it at the resort some evening when we have nowhere else to be for the night. Then at least I'll know for future trips!

Can you contact an Applebee's manager and ask them where their chicken products come from? It would be nice for you to be able to somehow check. My ODD is allergic to all chicken... So you are not alone in the world with "chicken issues." (Though I have never met anyone else who has them!)

If you premedicate with pepto bismol before eating, maybe you could prevent it.

I have the same issue, that's why I have not eaten meat in over 15 years, besides the stomach issues, I get achy joints and feel like I getting the flu. I went to the Dr. and was sent to a
Rheumatologist, where blood test showed that I had a form of an Auto Immune Arthritis which symptoms are triggered by eating any type of meat but I can eat Fish or shellfish. As long as I avoid Meat in any form, I'm healthy. I'm so thankful that Disney
has so many choices in food, something for everyone. If Chicken makes you sick, I would not want to eat it on my Vacation, just in case, it's not worth it. I usually look over the menus at each place we want to eat and find out what I can eat before going.

Agree 100%. You should probably see an allergist/specialist to figure out your exact problem. You might be allergic to a protein that is only broken down by certain cooking methods. I wouldn't be trying chicken anywhere until I had more information; it's just not worth it.

As someone who is is allergic to many foods, this sounds like an allergy to me and would recommend talking with your doctors and getting tested for food allergies. Otherwise, I would personally go out of my way to avoid it or if you can't just tell the wait staff your allergic to chicken and would like to consult with the chef on food options :)
