"The average person gains up to 10 pounds during the holidays. You do not need radical diets or extreme resolutions after New Year's to shed those excess pounds. Learn how to negotiate through the dinners, parties and events during the holidays, and choose healthy options to keep the weight off and stay in shape."

Memorial Hosp is sponsoring this meeting at the Auburn library next Thurs Nov 4 6-7pm, free

I signed up. Dont need to loose anymore but Id like to maintain through the holidays. I think its a great idea

I hope you'll share some of the great insight you'll receive from this meeting. :)

I brought home the notes - started to post earlier this morn but my computer wouldnt let me (ahhhh!)
on my way to work but when I get a chance I will post what was discussed - they gave us handouts

alot of what was talked about i (we) already know but it was an incentive to keep the weight off over the holidays

Holiday weight gain can range from 1-7pounds!

Holiday challenges:
special holiday meals - Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, New Years
parties - family, work, neighborhood, kids
goodies - candies, baked goods, special holiday items
too busy to exercise

Special meals:
awareness of potential calorie disaster
modify portions
modify recipes
plan the day for high calorie meal
additional exercise

Party strategies
do not go hungry
bring your own low calorie appetizer or dessert
be selective (eat mose special foods - stuffed mushrooms vs chip n dip)
watch your beverages - eggnog, punches, alcohol
mingle away from buffet table, work the room
fill your plate with healthy choices first: veggies, fruit, lean meat, fish, poultry
eat slowly and mindfully
use a smaller plate
focus more on fun vs food! (people not food)

Lower calorie party snacks
raw vegetables with low fat dip, salsa, or hummus
fruit salad
cocktail shrimp w/cocktail sauce
deviled eggs, with lite mayo, limit portion
lean meat skewers
low fat chips, pretzels, popcorn

Holiday goodies, treats and special foods
the holidays would not be the holidays without---?
how to avoid work goodies, gifts, etc?
what about your own baking/giving?
how to deal with Mom, Grandma, Aunt Edna's opinions? (what other alternatives than "loving with food"?)

Increasing Exercise
extra activity at work, be less efficient, use stairs, walking at lunch
walking in shopping malls
video tapes for indoor exercise
exercise equipment for gifts
be the family initiator of walks, and other activity

gives us a few things to think about
