Just had to share this special moment with others who will understand:
My family decided to take an "unplanned, somewhat last minute, low-cost" trip to WDW over a long Memorial Day weekend. This is our sixth visit in as many years - we've been coming once per year since DS was 3. This is also the first trip we've taken with just our little family of four - no friends or additional family members. I have to say, it has been one of the best trips we've ever had, and it has made me extra grateful for being DVC owners.
Anyhoo - at the main SSR pool yesterday, I believe DS9 had his first experience with vacation romance!! During the afternoon pool party, he befriended two sisters from England - Elizabeth and Lidya. (We think!) LOL! DS clearly took a shine to Elizabeth, and the two of them spent much of the afternoon together. Playing pool games, sitting in the hot tub, going down the slide, etc. She even got a camera to take pictures of DS. DH and I got such a hoot out of watching it all go down, and were sad for him when we had to leave for the evening.
For the rest of the evening we heard all about Elizabeth. And about how "they will probably never get to see eachother ever again for their whole lives." While en route to Epcot for the evening, he asked if there was an England there. When we said there was he asked if we could visit that country, since that's where Elizabeth is from.
The whole thing was so bittersweet, and I smile even now just thinking about it. I know at 9 boys and girls often still play together without even considering the boy-girl thing. But this was different. And it made me think about all the milestones in my kids' lives that I associate with Disney in some way. Like when DS was learning to read, and he would strain to see which bus was coming to the bus stop so he could try to read which bus it was. Or the first time we came without diapers. Or without strollers. Or on this trip, when we didn't hit a single character line or any of the Dumbo/Alladin/TriceratopsTwirl rides. My kids are growing up in front of my eyes, and sometimes our time here accentuates that in a way that it can't at home.
Hold your kids close, and love 'em up good! Time flies!
