Drinking Beer on Board...

Though I know this sounds silly, I was wondering what the most cost effective way to drink beer on board is. I know we can bring some in, which I plan to but I don't want to look like a weirdo and bring too much! Thanks in advance!

I bought the beer mug....you get to have it filled up at a cheaper rate than just ordering a beer. And you get to keep the mug afterwards.

I too prefer the mug. They will also give a token (like a coin) so you don't have to carry the mug around the ship with you. As I recall, they serve pretty good beer on board.

I do not remember the selections... Anyone??

Must be tine for bed. I saw the title of this thread and wondered why anyone would care if you were drinking beer while on the DIS board. :rolleyes2

I don't think you will look weird. On our 'Girls Only' cruises DBFF 36 and myself 32 took two cases of bud light and two bottles of wine on board. We just carried them in our book bags but must say very heavy! Lol. However it was well worth it as our bar tab went way down!!
We also packed in our suite case a small soft side cooler you carry on your shoulder. I think it held about 8 beers. We took it to the adult pools and even to castaway cay. No problems at all and our room steward always kept our beer iced down! (We took care of them too! ;-) ) again our bar tab was way down so it was worth it and no one seemed to look twice at us!
We cruise may 16 with our husbands so we ALL will have heavy book bags!!! ;-). Can't wait!!

I know in the Cayman Islands, we were allowed to buy a couple cans/bottles of duty free beer and carry them directly onboard the ship. I know other people buying liquor had to have their duty free alcohol sent to them onboard, to be delivered the last day of the cruise. But since we only had a couple cans of beer, they took us through customs and let us bring the beer onboard. We drank it in our stateroom.

Not sure about other ports... The only time we ever bought any beer was in Grand Cayman...

I'll second the beer mug idea, it worked really well for me. Also check around at the different bars early on in your cruise. The different bars usually have different beers on tap, and the pricing didn't always make sense, my favorite beer on the ship was actually only $4.50 for a draft, cheaper than any others.

Also, don't feel weird about carrying on. If you don't already have rolling carryons, just get a couple small ones and load them up with beer. I'd recommend cans over bottles, and take them out of the boxes and pack them individually in the suitcase. Remember that you can't get to your room until 1:30-ish, so if you plan on exploring the ship before that be careful of what you put in a backpack.

Also know that technically you are only supposed to drink what you bring in your stateroom. I don't think you'd really have any issues, but I'd be discreet about drinking it around the ship. Don't drink directly from the can, pour it into a glass, etc.

Finally, as mentioned, you can carryon more beer at ports. What's better, as long as you don't bring it back into the US you don't legally have to pay duty tax on it. Most places you can buy duty free and just carry on to the ship yourself, just make sure you buy it right before you get on the ship. In Grand Cayman I was escorted to the tender after buying, presumably to keep me from selling to locals or consuming in the port instead of buying the higher priced drinks. If you don't buy duty free, you can buy at any time in port and just carry back with you.

Have a great cruise!

Could someone explain the mug (and coin), as I'm going on a cruise shortly and didn't know about it while on my previous cruise? When/where can I buy the mug and what are the benefits (cheaper priced beer at all bars?). How much is the mug?

Here is a photo of the beer glass:

DCL claims that it holds 22 oz, but in reality it is more like 20 oz.

Having just returned from the Fantasy, I recommend taking on as much beer/wine as you can carry! We had a one or two drinks by the pool each day and a couple of drinks at dinner each night, and our bar tab as huge!!

You buy the mug onboard, they'll have stands set up the first day. I believe they are $14 or $15. Then, you can take the mug to any bar on the ship, and get it filled up for the price of their regular 16oz drinks. So you basically get 20-22oz of beer for the price of 15-16oz. When the cruise is over you get to keep the mug.

At the bars you'll continually get new mugs, so you don't have to worry about rinsing/washing yours. If you get the same kind of beer, they'll reuse your mug. If you get a different kind they'll either rinse it for you or give you a new mug. Once you're done drinking beer, you can give the bartender your mug and they will give you a card (on the magic it was a card, it might be a token on other ships). That card basically gives you the ability to grab a new mug at any other bar. So when you're done drinking you don't have to carry the mug around with you, or run it back to your room. Just trade it in for a card and put that in your pocket until you need another brew.

It's worth it if you drink a lot of beer. It's basically 4 beers for the price of three. After 12 beers you've made your money back form buying the mug, and you get to take the mug home with you.

That's right it's a card not a coin... All the beer I drank must have affected my memory.

No one's going to care. Put it in your carryon and don't think more about it!

We were two adults in our cabin (and one 8 year old) and I brought 4 bottles of Oregon wine and 4 22oz bottles of Oregon microbrew for our 3 night cruise. Now...those bottles were for my aunt, and were never intended to be gone by the end of the trip (I was giving them to her), and 7 of them came back off the ship (with me, ugh, she thought she would be charged customs for something purchased in the States), but with 6 bottles for 3 nights and 2 adults, no one commented at all.

Just off the Wonder- bought the mug and did not regret.

Draft selections were-

Bud Light
Heineken
Stella Artois
Kona Longboard Island Lager
Kona Big Wave Golden Ale

The Quiet Cove bartender said there were 7 beers on board, but these were all I could find. The Kona Longboard seemed to be almost everywhere, but the Big Wave (found in Cadillac Lounge and Wavebands) was my preferred beer.

The best part about taking it home...is bringing it back with you on the next cruise!

DH does a combo of the Beer Mug and taking his own. He normally takes on either a 24 or 30 pk in a collapsable rolling 21" suitcase. That seems to suit him very well.
