Do You Wanna Eat Some Breakfast? Or Maybe Lunch and Dinner Too?

And now for the much anticipated review of
Restaurant Marrakesh

We arrived at the restaurant promptly on time for our 12:40 ADR. There was maybe one person checking in ahead of us. They gave us a card indicating we were Candlelight Processional Package people (say that three times fast!).
IMG_0395.JPG

We took a seat in the lobby for a few minutes
IMG_0394.jpg

And were at our table by 12:47pm. It was against the wall straight back from the performers. The ceiling was beautiful.
IMG_0396.JPG

The dancer was very enjoyable.
IMG_0398.JPG

Our table was for four, and I took the seat on the inside, up against a pillar type thing. Problem was, the base of the pillar was wider than the body so my chair kept getting stuck and I was a bit squished.

Isaam was our waiter and Saad was his "assistant" (kept the water filled and cleared dishes).

Our CP package was $39.99/person plus tax and gratuity. It included an appetizer, entree, dessert, and non-alcoholic beverage. Some of the non-alcoholic specialty beverages sounded good but they weren't part of the package, so we all got sodas.

As for appetizers, PB had the Beef Brewat Rolls (baked layers of thin pastry filled with seasoned minced beef, eggs, fried and sprinkled with cinnamon and powdered sugar). He described it as "a beef egg roll" but said it was very good.
IMG_0399.JPG

Mom and I shared the Goat Cheese with Crispy Bread for Two (mixture of cheese and kalamata olives served with red pepper sauce and balsamic vinegar reduction). Mom was hesitant at first because of the red pepper sauce but it was really very mild. PB didn't think he'd like it because it had olives mixed in to the cheese but you couldn't even pick them out in flavor. Very yummy!
IMG_0400.JPG

They also bring around fresh pieces of bread. We asked for more and were told, "No problem" but Isaam never came back with it. The same happened with some of our drink refills, so that was a definite negative.
IMG_0402.jpg

Each of us got a different entree. I had the Chicken Kebabs (grilled brochettes of chicken breast with olive salad and dried fruit sweet couscous). The chicken was good but I had a devil of a time trying to pry it off the skewer. I definitely flung at least one, and probably two, onto the floor. I know one hit Mom on the way down because she had a funny green splotch on the side of her pants for the rest of the day! :rotfl:
IMG_0403.JPG

I loved the couscous, but wasn't feeling quite brave enough to try the olive salad. Also on the skewers were vegetables. Now the mushrooms were one thing, but whole pieces of onion are totally another. There were baby tomatoes and pieces of zucchini as well, so be prepared for that.

Mom had the Shish Kebabs (grilled tenderloin of beef with roasted rosemary potatoes and vegetables medley).
IMG_0404.JPG

She also had some difficulty getting the meat off the skewers, but not nearly as much as me! This was also very good, according to her.

And PB went all out and ordered the Roast Lamb Meshoui (lamb shank braised in natural juice served with roasted eggplant puree, zucchini and tomatoes).
IMG_0405.JPG

He ate every last bite, which is kind of a common theme!

Isaam stopped by exactly once to ask "How is everything so far?" That irked Mom; she used to be a waitress and told us after he'd disappeared that she was always told to never ask, "So far", which kind of makes sense. It's almost like you're being set up for disappointment. "So far, everything is good but it could rapidly go downhill". :rolleyes1

So let's recap our time frame so far. 12:47, we're seated. 1:10 we have our appetizers, 1:33 we receive our entrees. Well, whoops, now we're already behind my pre-planned schedule because we are almost always in and out of TS restaurants in less than an hour, but it's been 45 minutes and we're just eating the main course! Alright, we can reschedule the Moroccan Holiday Storyteller for later.

We've asked for more bread and not received it, our drinks are empty, and Isaam seems to have disappeared. I think Saad came to take our dessert orders and despite us asking, did not bother to refill our drinks.

For dessert, we each ordered one thing off the menu to sample everything (there are only three choices anyway).
This was the Moroccan Symphony, which is basically assorted baklavas.
IMG_0406.JPG

They were good, but not outstanding.

My choice was the Bastilla (crispy leaves of pastry topped with vanilla cream and sprinkled with toasted almonds) and I thought this was the best of the desserts.
IMG_0407.JPG

But the winner for Mom & PB was the Marrakesh Delight (fresh fruit salad topped with mint ice cream, toasted almonds and orange blossom water). I really wanted to like it but there was just too much going on flavor wise.
IMG_0408.JPG

Desserts were delivered at 2pm and Isaam has still not come back to check on us or give us the check. We are starting to get restless and we're also freezing-the restaurant was ice cold. Finally he comes back, we take care of paying, and this was one restaurant where I left less than an 18% tip. The service was just not good. In fact, it was so bad that Mom asked to speak to the manager on the way out. We were compensated with a to-go box of baklava and cappuccinos.
IMG_0409.jpg

Manager said she'd talk to Isaam and perhaps he was having a bad day, he's normally a very good server, he typically waits on the VIPs, someone's father just died so the whole staff is a little off, etc. We understand that sometimes people just have a bad day, and in fact, when I got home I noticed that someone wrote to the Unofficial Guide and specifically mentioned him as being an excellent server. We finally left around 2:30.

So as far as the restaurant goes, yes, the food was good, but the restaurant was soooo cold and the service was awful. I may go back eventually but I'm not in a huge hurry and would probably try the CS location first.

Funnel Cake Stand (America)
Since we were seeing the 5pm Candlelight Show, we got in line around 4. Really not necessary, but oh well. While we waited, PB went to get some snacks and drinks and I asked him to please buy me a Pumpkin Spice Funnel Cake. I've been eying this thing for almost 3 years now, but it's $8.00 and that's quite a lot.
IMG_0435.JPG

WORTH. EVERY. PENNY. I love pumpkin and I love funnel cake and this was just heaven on a plate.

Les Halles Boulangerie & Patisserie
I rarely ever call this by it's new, full name. Most of the time I call it by it's old name, or simply, "the bakery in France". We come here pretty much every trip for two things: the cheese plate and the strawberry tart. Oh yeah.

This time we ventured in a little bit after 8pm. Mom and I got in line while PB hunted down a table for us, then when we came to sit down, he went up to order. This was easily our most expensive counter service meal, at $40 for the two of us. I almost fell over when they announced the total!

For some reason, we ordered two Fromages (the cheese plates, at $9.25 each). We could have easily ordered one and shared (I don't eat the bleu or swiss cheeses). Then we got a big baguette to share($2.95). The Fraises (that delicious strawberry & vanilla cream tart) was another $4.25, plus I wanted to try the Bûche de Noël au Chocolat (Chocolate Christmas Log) which added $5.75 to the total. Finally, two large sodas. Yeesh!
IMG_3776.JPG

As usual, those two things were delicious. I was not as enamored with the Chocolate Log. Disney Food Blog sums it up pretty accurately: "a chocolate cake topped with dark and white chocolate mousse". It was too rich and I just didn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to. But it certainly looked pretty!
IMG_0464.JPG

And with that, we were done with food at Epcot for this trip. All in all, we did pretty good. Hit up the Holiday Around the World items at Mexico, Norway, China, Germany, and France. Totally should have gotten one of the little passports but I completely forgot!

Kona Cafe
Another meal I was looking forward to trying! Our ADR was at 1:35pm, and I feel we arrived right on time. Upon checking in, we were immediately led to a table on the right side of the restaurant, close to the dessert samples. It was just Mom and me and I told them it would only be two, because PB was supposed to be working until 4 that day. But he got released early and showed up to lunch...after Mom and I had been seated. I apologized profusely to our waiter that we'd have one more in our party and I hoped that wouldn't be a problem, and it wasn't, but I still felt bad. We were already at a table for four.

So I believe our waiter was Jorge, and we were overall not impressed with him. For starters, he brought out our appetizer and entree at the same time. Big thumbs down. Who does that? They arrived about 12 minutes after we were seated.

Mom and I split the meal here, as is our tradition. We decided on the Lump Crab Cakes and asked for the Jalapeno Lime Sauce on the side ($12.49).
IMG_0466.JPG

Mmmmmm, they were so good, and didn't even need the sauce.

Our entree was the Polynesian Plate Lunch of Pan-fried Chicken with Coconut and Mango Sauces served with Sticky Rice and Pasta Salad for $15.99.
IMG_0467.JPG

Even being brought out early this was still phenomenal. The chicken was so tender you could cut it with a fork. The sauces were perfect and made the plain old sticky rice more palatable. I loved the pasta salad even though it was pretty generic.

Like I said, both of those dishes were brought out at 1:47pm, when we'd arrived around 1:35. No rush, right? ;) When PB arrived about two minutes after we were seated, they took his order too. It was a very speedy process.

Following the instantaneous timeframe, both his appetizer and entree were delivered at the same time, a mere five minutes after ours. He had the Steamed Pork Buns (Cider-braised Pork, spicy Hoisin Sauce, and Granny Apple Slaw with Roasted Brown Rice Vinaigrette -$7.99).
IMG_0469.JPG

His entree was also pork, but in this case it was the BBQ Pork Tacos: Pulled Pork Slow-cooked in House-made Barbecue Sauce with Tomato Salsa and Jalapeño-Lime Sour Cream served in a House-made Shell with Pasta Salad and Smokey Bacon Slaw for $12.99. I don't see a whole lotta meat but I guess it was there somewhere!
IMG_0468.JPG

And then Jorge disappeared. Nowhere to be found as our glasses sat empty. Mom and I went up to look at the dessert options, even though we were pretty set on one thing...and we ended up sticking with it. Eventually Jorge came back and we ordered the Chocolate Fondue with Tropical Fruit and House-made Cookies ($6.99).
IMG_0470.JPG

This was truly amazing. On the left side, there were two balls of pound cake to dip as well as some pralines. I can't remember the last time I had a kiwi, so that was exciting! And we love pineapple and strawberries! :cloud9: Pretty sure we just about licked the bowl with that one. PB declined dessert.

We told Jorge several times that we would be separate checks. He said it would be no problem Sure enough he came back with two checks...but they were two copies of the same one! Mine and mom's! :headache: Then we couldn't find Jorge to tell him about it. PB said if he was a worse person he wouldn't say anything, but we had a larger check anyway so that doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Mom headed to the restroom while PB and I got the bill issue straightened out. Yee gads, what a headache!

In summary: food was fantastic and I'd definitely return for that but hope for better service.

Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn & Cafe
After the 8pm castle lighting, we were hungry, and restaurant options were limited during the party. Pecos Bill seemed the best choice, even if it's one of my least favorite places to eat. At that point, it was pretty empty. We decided to order a couple of kids meals. Mom had a burger and I had a grilled cheese; both of us asked for grapes, fries, and water. Mom went to get us a table near a window since the first parade was passing by!

From our spot, we had a decent but not great view of it, but the soundtrack was loud and clear! Didn't take a pic of the burger but I thought the grilled cheese was too funny.
IMG_0628.JPG

That is indeed "goldfish" whole grain bread with some barely melted American cheese on it. So definitely not the best sandwich I've ever had but definitely the cutest. No complaints on the meal and the fries were actually really, really good!

MVMCP Snacks-Tortuga Tavern
As we left Pecos and headed back to the hub, I wanted to stop in here to pick up a few of our "free treats". While I didn't take any pictures, I thought they were an improvement from 2012. I had a very small cup of cocoa (one size only) and it was good and very toasty. I grabbed us each a snickerdoodle cookie (the only kind offered unless you have allergies) and they were nice and soft. I'm typically not a big snickerdoodle fan anyway but these didn't strike me as particularly great or really awful. Wish we would have found a bit more time to take more advantage of these treat stops!

thanks for the great photos and reviews....
We had the same problem with our only visit to Morocco...So not on our list to return..
Anxious to get back there in four or so months..

Thanks again

Everything from Kona looks so good! Sorry about the lackluster waiter.

I think that food wise, it was our best meal this trip.

Oh dear, guess it's not only me that had that problem then! I talked to some other people who went in December that said Marrakesh was their favorite restaurant of their trips, so I was a bit disappointed.

That's too bad about your service at Marakkesh (I know I'm spelling that wrong) :sad1: But I'm glad to hear the food was good. It looks yummy! I did decide to book dinner here for DH and I on our upcoming March trip, so hoping for good food AND good service :thumbsup2

We did HDDR for the first time in Aug. and my boys 9 & 12 loved it! I'm not a ribs/fried chicken person but the rest of the family is. However, I could have eaten the cornbread, mashed potatoes, and definitely that strawberry shortcake all night lol! Also DH was picked to be Davey the angel....the pictures we have of that are priceless :rotfl:

Finally, I think you've convinced me to change some things around and have lunch at the bakery in France this trip. We tried last Feb. but DS12 didn't like anything they had so we all gave up and went somewhere else. Since this trip is just DH and I, I'm going to get myself that cheese plate!

Oh, and I noticed you on the March FB group ;)

Nice reviews! I have never noticed that chandelier at via Napoli. It's really cute. The Olaf cake pop looks so cute and sounds really good!

Enjoying your report, Gretchen! Getting me revved up for our trip next month!

Glad you're liking it! Have a great time on your trip!

Hello, fellow March guest! And you were there in August too! :thumbsup2 I hope your experience at Marrakesh is better than ours. The people they pick for the HDDR parts are always spot on, for sure. Yes, you have to get the cheese plate! Every time someone tells me I've convinced them to give the bakery a try, I'm like

I love that chandelier! The Olaf cake pop was just okay but it certainly was cute. And it traveled home (in a styrofoam cup) surprisingly well!

Olivia's Cafe

Friday morning we had an ADR at Olivia's at Old Key West for 10:20am. Since we had some problems with resort airline check in, I suspect we may have been a couple of minutes late. However, once we checked in, they seated us right away in the middle of the big room. Our server was Yanet.

We both started off with some juice. While the Conch Republic Omelet was highly recommended by Yanet, we chose to split the Sunrise Platter
of fresh Tropical Fruit and Yogurt topped with Toasted Coconut ($6.99) and the Banana Bread French Toast topped with Bahamian Banana-Rum Butter Sauce, Coconut Cream, and served with your choice of Bacon, Sausage, or Ham ($11.99).

This french toast was AMAZING! I don't normally care for bananas foster type things but this was so yummy! We ate every last bite.
IMG_0844.JPG

The fruit plate was great too, I can't remember the last time I had kiwi. I ate all the pineapple, and even the honeydew melon was not as mushy as it normally is in Disney fruit platters.
IMG_0845.JPG

Overall, a great, inexpensive breakfast. If you have a car or are staying at Old Key West, definitely give it a try! Otherwise, it's a bit of a hassle to get there.

Riverside Mill
For lunch, we strolled over to Port Orleans Riverside and dined at their food court. It was around 2:20pm so not very busy. We split the "Make Your Own Pasta" for $11.99 (our choice was fettuccine, alfredo sauce, shrimp, and parmesan cheese). It came with a breadstick and we ordered an extra side of three more ($2.99). Mom also got a Magic Cookie Bar ($3.99), which I did not take a picture of.

This pasta picture is from when I last ate here in March 2012. While the pasta is unchanged, the breadstick is now similar to what you get at Olive Garden.
DSCN0565.JPG

The pasta serving is definitely generous and great for sharing. There were eight shrimp that we counted, so we each got four. I thought the breadsticks were fine but preferred the old ones. Mom loved her cookie bar when she ate it later at the airport.

And that concludes this episode of "Gretchen's Food Reviews". Check back in late March/early April for my next batch!

Good reviews!

We usually go to Kona every year, as my brothers love it.. 2 years ago we had awful service as well, but our last trip in September we had good service! Definitely yummy.

Was also good to hear that about the caramel apples about how they can slice them for you, I did not know that! That's very cool and I will definitely be getting one on my senior trip in May now!!!:thumbsup2

Really enjoyed reading, Gretchen! Looking forward even more to my dinner at Marrakesh and lunch at Les Halles b/c of your report :thumbsup2

Where are you planning on eating in March/April?

Where are you planning on eating in March/April?

We are doing dinners at Fulton's Crab House, Cali Grill (both new to me), Ohana (my friend's request, he loved it last time), Sci-Fi, and possibly Turf Club, and lunches at Biergarten (also new to me), Liberty Tree, Yak & Yeti. Also giving the Wishes Dessert Party a try!

Hmm......DH wanted to try Fulton's on our upcoming trip but I just wasn't sure.....think I'll wait for your review and then possibly book for our Nov. trip :thumbsup2

We've done Turf Club dinner and Biergarten lunch, enjoyed both. Hope you do, too! I'll be watching for your next Dining Review:goodvibes
