I know some people refuse to make ADRs, but many of those people are also flexible with whatever's available or willing to just eat quick service. The reality, WDW is not like Disneyland, and it's going to be a pretty bitter pill for him to swallow when he's either told no or that he's got at least a 2-4 hour wait to be seated. And with a child involved...well, talk about tears when you try walking up to a favorite character meal just to hear no. And believe me...I've witnessed that in person...and it's not pretty.
He may not love the idea of you making ADRs, but you'll be grateful that you did. Please also consider stalking the website if you can't get exactly what you want at first. Things tend to open up closer to travel dates as people start weeding out what they're not going to use. In fact, morning of or night before is an amazing time to pick up last minute things as so many are dropping at the last moment to avoid the penalty.
