Do they ever let you bank points for two years

Not that I am aware of. Points can only be banked once and once banked, can't be borrowed back.

Unfortunately no you cannot bank 2 years worth of points. You can bank one year, use your current year, or borrow from the next if need be, but you cannot bank 2 years worth.

No they do not let you bank 2 years of points. Try to rent them if you can, At least they will not go to waste.

No, they have to be used the year after they are banked. You can always rent out a reservation.

As noted, banking points will extend their useful life for one additional year.

However, you can have the use of three years worth of points for one trip using banked, current and borrowed points - and could even use points from a 4th year if the trip spans two Use Years.

Good point, not talked about much, but if your reservation crosses the 1st of the month of your use year you could bank into one, then borrow into the next.

Bank 2010 into 2011, make a reservation in 2012 that crosses the use year and borrow 2013 into 2012. Use 2010/2011 for part of stay and 2012/2013 for the rest.

Thanks Doc. I went to try and start a new rent or trade points thread, but it said I needed 50 posts minimum...so, it looks like I'm going to be chatty here for a bit. ;-)

Being "chatty" may not help much. The mods are looking for substantive posts, so just posting "Cool!" or "Welcome Home" may not qualify.

With regard to your original substantive question, however, there is one way you can extend points for two years. We also currently have the option of depositing points into RCI, where they are valid for two years from their deposit date.

That's not a preferred option, because depositing the points is an irreversible transaction and there is no guarantee that you'll be able to obtain an acceptable RCI exchange for those points. But it's an option.

philm, based on your original question and your note about renting points, looks like you are trying to "not waste" points you may not be able to personally use this year. Note that your 50 non-rent/trade and substantive posts also need to spread over 6 months.

So you may want to consider using a rental service to help you with renting your points. dvcrequest.com is one. You will see its ad as well as a sticky in the rent/trade board.

This went way over my head but I'd like to understand...can someone give an example using numbers? :confused3

Here is an example.

Assumptions:
  • Your UY is October.
  • You want a BLT 2-bdrm Lake View for 9/29 (40 points), 9/30 (48 points), 10/1 (50 points), 10/2 (43 points) in 2011.
Here is what you can do to use 4 years' points:
  • Bank your Oct 2009 points. You can use these points 10/1/2010 - 9/30/2011. You can use 44 of these points for 9/29 & 9/30.
  • Your Oct 2010 points can also be used between 10/1/2010 - 9/30/2011. Use 44 of these points for 9/30.
  • Your Oct 2011 points can be used between 10/1/2011 - 9/30/2012. Use 50 of these points for 10/1.
  • Borrow your Oct 2012 points. You can use these points 10/1/2011 - 9/30/2012. Use 43 of these points for 10/2.
Hope this example clarifies. In this example, if you only have 46 points per UY, you can bank 4 points from Oct 2010 points to use for 10/1 as well.

Holy cow that's brilliant. Thanks!

I'd never thought about this scenario, but it might just be a huge help to me in the future. We've been thinking about a big family reunion trip sometime in the next few years and this could very well help us stretch our points enough to make it happen. My other alternative was to have some points transferred in to me from another DIS'r. I see some complicated MS conversations in my future! :lmao:

This is pretty fantastic! I didn't think about it, either. A big advantage of dipping into year 4 would be home resort. I assume we can make these reservations at the 11 month mark, so locking down that hard to get room around our UY would be easier.

With the reservation over the change in uy, be aware that the part before the changeover is as risky as any reservation right at the end of the use year. If you have to cancel or even make adjustments after the banking deadline, it may be difficult to use those points before they expire. For example, cutting a day from the beginning and adding a day to the end could be very complicated.

This is the first time I've seen a strong reason as to when use year might be important. We have a Dec use year, but we almost always visit in September. If I had a September UY I could use the "4 yr" scenario.:)

4 years worth of points? :teacher: WOW! And here i thought I was smart for using 3 years of points.

I guess there are post restrictions because the number of one time posts to the Rent/Trade would be astronomical. My wife and I have been DIS lurkers for 5+ years. I enjoy the discussions now, but probably never would have posted until I saw PM and rent/trade board minimums. I was still lucky enough to find people here that would transfer points to me.

And now, I upgraded to MK view at BLT. I can't wait to see the kids faces when they see fireworks out the window.
