Do characters still sign pillowcases?

Hi

We have pillowcases for my son and nephew. It is better to use fabric markers or sharpies. Also do you need to put something in the middle of the pillowcase, so that the markers don't go through to the other side of the pillowcase. Should we wash the pillowcase prior to bringing them to the cruise.
