Hi!

First time cruisers, registered for the Black Friday sail aboard DCL. It will be me, DW & DD (a few weeks shy of 4 years old at time of sail). My parents also cruising this trip to take DD one or two nights for us.

We're interested in the FE - I'll get my post count >10 in the morning so we can PM.

Thanks,
-Andrew
Good morning Andrew, and welcome to the group!
:welcome::welcome::welcome:
I will add you to the roll call, and send you the PM for the FE.
Thanks for getting your posts up :teacher:

The settings say all members can start conversations, is there another setting somewhere?
Try checking settings under your profile.
To do this, double click on your screen name in the top right hand corner of this page. Then, on the left hand side of the screen under settings, click on contact details.
Now in the center of the screen you should have your message preferences. The second check box in this section says " accept conversations from..." Make sure that says 'members only'.

Contact allow PM.JPG

Hopefully that will allow me to PM you. :o

Looks like the settings are right - maybe it takes a little bit of time for DISBoards to register the post count and allow conversations? I'm not seeing a way to send you a PM, so that'd be my guess.

My only other thought is the privacy tab. However, I think that is what you were refering to orginally.
Under the Privacy tab, do you have Start Conversation with You set to Members only?

While waiting, I will continue searching. :guilty:

It went through!!

Just a quick note to all FEer's, except for a TBD cabin number in each of the groups, Groups 1 and 2 are now full. The information for both cabins are completely filled in as well.
If I have not sent you the link for the spread sheet yet, please PM me so that I can get that to you.

Thanks for the Monday reminders Tink! Those are always great - really appreciate them! I don't get on the Disboards everyday, but it's so fun when I see something in our board! :goodvibes

Welcome to our new families - so excited that more are joining us!

I got to talk to a gal at work on Friday who will be cruising on the Wonder the cruise immediately after ours (so we'll be getting off as she's getting ready to get on) - we talked tips since she's new to the DCL and we've done 2, so we're pros. lol ;) But I did steer her to the Disboards, so I think she'll get a lot of good info here.

I hope everyone had a great Labor Day yesterday. We relaxed and cleaned some, but since it's the start of football season, we mostly rested from a pretty busy weekend. :)

I've been looking at the excursions again, and I'm wondering if any past cruisers have been out to the Atlantis, and if so, is there anything they highly recommend doing?

The only other time that we stopped in Nassau we just bummed around town and took in the local sights, but since we're going back we really want to go see Atlantis - even if all we do is look around... then I noticed they are offering a half-day pass just for our cruise (probably since the port time is so short) - does anyone recommend the half-day pass for Aquaventure? Or should we just wing it and check on getting an aquarium pass at Atlantis once we get there?

Let me know what ya'll think. :)

Brit- Our first trip to Nassau, we were lucky enough to have a friend of a friend give us a tour. The girl who gave us the tour, had been my best friends college room mate.
There is nothing like seeing the area with a local. One of the places she took us was over to Atlantis. We did not do the water park because we were trying to spread our time equally around all areas of interest along with getting a taste of local cuisine from a restaurant that locals eat at. However when we were there, we looked through all of the shops outside of Atlantis (they are cute and a little more upscale than the straw market in Nassau), the casino (fun), and the aquarium (loved it). I would say that the aquarium is worth a visit if you are like me and love fishies, and / or nature. Atlantis has done a beautiful job of presenting the aquarium. *** side note - there is a part of the aquarium that can be viewed for free if you want to take a sneak preview. The area is about the size of the atrium on the boat.
I can not speak for Aquaventure as I have not personally experienced it, but have heard mixed reviews. Our concern when we looked at the half day excursion was the price we were paying for the amount of time we would actually be able to play. Keep in mind, it will take a minimum of 30 minutes to get to and from Atlantis.

Few questions for the experienced Disney Cruiser's:

1) Safety - DW is worried about leaving DD @ Oceaneers club - she read the story about the lost child that was sleeping in the chair pile. Any board members want to share their OC stories/experience?

2) Cabana @ Castaway Cay - I've heard they're already sold out. What are the odds one will free up for first time cruisers - I'd love to grab one for our family of 5.

3) How is the kid/family pool on days at sea?

Andrew-
My boys have had nothing but glowing things to say about the OC. If you ask them about their cruising experiences, they will tell you how awful, how small, and how little there was to do on Royal Caribbean and Carnival (in their kid areas). And then they would tell you how much fun they had, and how many friends they made on Disney. As a matter of fact, there were times we had to pull them out (they were that intent on staying). Which led to the rule that required family time is breakfast and dinner. Everyone must attend.
But that does not answer your wife's questions about safety. Unfortunately, when it comes to stories about Disney (or any place else for that matter) it is always the sad, scary, or disturbing stories that get attention. While the stories about the wonderful experiences are missed or not even noted. (side note...Tink moment... I have worked very hard as of late to make sure to leave positive reviews when something good happens, not just negative review for the bad. It is sad but true, that we can find time in our busy lives to talk about how bad something is, but rarely find time to share about the outstanding things). I have not heard the story about the child falling asleep in a stack of chairs, but find it odd that my husband and I were talking about children falling asleep (or there inability to fall asleep) in the OC just last night. Someone had asked us "if my child falls asleep in the kids area, do I have to bring them back to the room, or can we just leave them until they wake up?" First I have to explain how floored I was at the question, but answered quite nicely that I honestly would not think that falling asleep in the kids are was possible. There is so much going on in there, that falling asleep would be difficult. And if a child was found sleeping in a pile of chairs, I am sure it was because they were so tired, and that they wanted to sleep, so the found someplace with no activity going on. The good news is, all the children are given RFID bands when they are signed up for the kids program. These bands are scanned when they go into the OC, and again when they leave. If a child is proving difficult to find, a cast member can pull up the child on the computer and see whether or not someone has signed them out (and don't worry, you have the chance during sign up to designate who can and can't sign your child in and out). {Another side note, with the RFID band, your child should be able to be located no matter where they are on the boat.} Basically, if you or your wife are the only ones allowed to sign them in and out, than if neither of you signed the kiddos out, they would still be there. There are occasions when one of the activities is scheduled for out of the OC (like a game up on the sports deck). On these occasions, they are with OC cast members who keep a good eye on them. They will document who they take with them, and make sure that is who they have with them until they return (and if you come to the OC during that time, they can tell you where your kiddos are). Oh, and I don't know if it helps or not, but the OC on the Wonder is smaller than the one on the Fantasy or the Dream (the larger ships have several rooms, and hallways connecting them). And the story probably came from one of those ships. To put your worries at ease, they will have an open house on our first day aboard, and you will get a chance to see how secure the OC is, and how many cast members they have on hand to watch over the kiddos.
Now, Cabanas at Castaway...I wish I could put your mind at ease as hopefully I did about the OC, but I can't. I can verify that all of the Cabanas are taken. We are gold members, and they were all gone when I logged on at 12:01 AM on the day that online check in opened for Gold members. We had wanted to get one for a large group of us that are going. What you can do is go straight to the guest service desk when you get on board and ask to be put on the waiting list for cabanas, and then keep your fingers crossed.
If you do not get a cabana, don't fret, there are a lot of great areas on the island. My family has a tradition of hitting the game area before lunch, and then we find a nice place on the beach that still has undisturbed beach chairs and umbrellas, and make ourselves comfy.
On sea days, the Mickey pool and family pool is a hit or miss kind of thing. If there is a family activity going on around the pool, or a good movie on the mega tron, they will probably be on the crowded side. However, earlier in the day and late afternoon, it is thinned out. Other than that, it is hard to say until we get on board and see if we are on a sold out cruise or not. Either way, I think that you should be able to find a beach lounger to put your stuff on, and room in the pool. The hot tub on the other hand is always packed. If you want to use a hot tub, I would plan to do that when you can go to the adult only area.

Hope that helps,
~Tink~

Thanks Tink, much appreciated.

Do you know if you can specify if your child is allowed to go on the "field trips" to the sports deck? My wife just read your response and left the room going "no no no no no no no no" :). Apparently she's okay with OC if we can opt-out of the field trips, otherwise I guess we'll have to wait until she's a bit older.

Oh, and the fun chair story - the sleeping part was one thing, the big scare was that the RFID wasn't working so they spent a few hours not knowing where their child was and the crew couldn't do much. I work in tech, I know that RFID can be iffy, so I think the biggest part for those parents was how it was handled; as with everything in life, right? Either way, I think I have my wife somewhat onboard with OC pending the opt-out :).

Will do on the Cabana - we really wanted one for my parents who are sailing with us. My father is deaf, so a place for him to sit down and relax while we go about our day, and know where to find him to get lunch, etc was what we were after. Might just have to grab chairs/umbrellas early and claim an area.

Disney is very responsive and go the extra mile to individualize each guests experience. When signing the kiddos up for the OC, you can let them know any restrictions that you would wish to be added on. My son also just said when he was at that age, they had several things for the kids to do at any given time, and when they are going to have a "field trip", not everyone has to go. He also said there were a lot of kids who's parents told them they did not have permission to leave the OC with out them, so they would say no, they did not want to go on the field trip. You can also keep in mind, that if you want to pick and choose what time you take your kiddos to the OC, the Navigator (our daily planner that magically shows up in our room each night when we are at dinner....I think the towel animals bring them in) has a complete list of every activity on board. That includes each of the OC age groups. If there is a "field trip" coming up, it will be on the Navigator specifying where the activity will be taking place. If you see Oceanears Lab is going to be....on the sports deck, than you know that would be a good time for family time.
You can let her know that the Disney boat is full of cameras. The only areas that they can not track the movement of someone would be inside the cabins and the restrooms.
And on our first Disney Cruise, we were very nervous about the kids areas. This was probably because we took them on the other 2 cruises first. By the 3rd day though, we were more comfortable and able to relax and enjoy our vacation. I was such an over protective mother hen that I would not even book a verandah until we were up graded to one. My youngest was a curious one, and I did not even want to think about him getting out on the patio area. When we got in the room, and saw the child safety lock on the top of the door, well out of reach (even if he got up on a chair), I breathed a sigh of relief.

The area with the blue building on it is a nice quiet area. It has a good amount of shade, and a few hammocks along with lounge chairs. The location gives you a good view of the boat, the lagoon, and the water play areas. The only thing is, there are a limited number of chairs, so to snag this spot you have to get there early.

I read the same story and it freaked me out as well. I am wondering if something like the Tile would work as a back up, especially with the Navigator app getting more people to use their phones onboard. I am not sure how much time our kids will be in the clubs since this is our first cruise and we want to do as much together as we can.

Okay, I am going to have to search for the story.
Aside from that, you have stumped me. What is a Tile? aside from what is on the floor or counter.
