My ds12 and I just came back from RCCL's Mariner of the Seas. It is a voyager class ship. We loved it! There was so much for us to do and especially for him.
The kids area is located in the back of the ship. On one side are the kids areas--they have indoor play rooms and access to decks with outdoor activities such as human checkers. There weren't as many little kids as on a
Disney cruise.
The "tween" and "teen" areas are on the other side. They have a "living room" (hang out and talk, do activities, watch tv, has a soda fountain)and "fuel" (dance/activity area) plus a back deck area that is theirs to use. It is close to the arcade, mini golf, pools, rock climbing wall, sports court, inline skating. There were lots of activities for these two age groups. My son made a lot of new friends and had a great time!
I think it is a great ship for families with tweens and teens that have maybe outgrown the disney characters (please no flames, you know what I mean, the wonder and
awe aren't there, instead it is
ah, do I have to have a picture?). There seemed to be plenty of organized activities for the kids and they had an area all to themselves. My son and his new friends would go to the Promenade cafe for pizza and cookies at midnight.
RCCL still does soda package. We both got it and I liked the convenience of it. There are plenty of locations on the Mariner to get pop without having to make a special trip like we did on DCL (we were pre-free pop). There are bars located throughout the ship that have music and other entertainment that is fun to sit, relax and enjoy. My son went to one location so much that the bartender would have his soda--complete with cherry--ready for him!
We enjoyed the shows, especially the opening, farewell and ice show! We could have gone to the ice show twice! The late night comedy shows were good too. We went to art auctions and the parades in the promenade. We enjoyed the dining and buffets. We ate in the dining room every night--well, my son ate with the tweens/teens two nights--and enjoyed the buffets during the day. We had late seating, so would go to "tea" between 3 and 5 to help tide us over.
As for rooms, we do inside cabins as we are rarely in our room except to sleep and change clothes. It was about the same size as DCL, but we had more storage in bath and over desk area--behind the mirrors on both and on the shelf in bath. My suitcases also fit under RCL beds and they didn't on DCL.
There were plenty of deck chairs also and I thought there weren't that many on DCL. Also didn't see the "saving" of chairs like on DCL.
All in all, I would highly recommend RCCL voyager class ships if you have tweens/teens (12-17) and maybe even for the 10/11 year olds. There is also a dance club that was very popular with the 18 and up set.
