Disney is #1, but does anyone compare?

I have cruised with Disney two times and absolutely loved it! However, feel that their prices have really jumped and would possibly be open to trying another cruise line that may be a little more affordable. I want a family atmosphere and don't want to be on a 'party' boat. I have 2 children (17 and 13). Does anyone have any recommendations/suggestions? :flower:

RCI Mariner of the Seas. Leaves from the same port. Is a Voyager Class ship. Plenty for your kids to do and we found that the same week, similar balcony stateroom, similar itinerary (although NO CC) would be over $1,000 less. THey have many activities for the kids and adults as well without being a "party" ship. Good luck deciding.

This will be our second Disney Cruise, and most likely our last. :guilty: We orignially booked this in 02, and then had to bump the date back another six months cause of work & school vacation conflicts, and secondly cost. Needed another six months to pay it off, cause although I'd like to think so this DF is not made of money. :confused3 Anyway next time out we will probably try RCCL they seem to have lower $$$$. Love DCL and realize there maybe some trade offs, :confused3 but the family enjoys cruise vacations, so we will just go somewhere that costs less .

Fortunately for us, with our FL Res discount, we pay less for a 7 night cruise with DCL than any other cruise line, including Carnival - Nevertheless, if the same cost, I would opt for RCCL Voyager class ships Navigator, Mariner, and Explorer in that order....

IMHO For the ages of your children, one of RCCL's Voyager Class ships would be a better choice than Disney. They would love it and so would you! We've done 2 Disney cruises also and loved them. We cruised on RCCL's Voyager of the Seas and were blown away. The only thing about Voyager that I didn't enjoy quite as much were the stage shows. They weren't bad, just not Disney. They had a Cirque Du Soliel type show and a rock concert (The Nelsons) but the Ice show was UNBELIEVABLE! I'm of the same thinking about DCL's prices even though I think they are worth the cost, you can get just as good a cruise experience, albeit a different one for quite a bit less $$$$. Also, I like to experience different places so for me, unless they bring a new ship/itinerary into the picture, I think we will explore other options.

What about RCCL's room sizes?

Is an oceanview on RCCL the same size as DCL? DH, DD and I are maxxed out in a CAT 9 on DCL, and I can't imagine sacrificing any space. DCL is 214 sq. ft. Does anyone know RCCL's?

Just thought I would mention on April 12th on the travel channel is a show called worlds best cruise ships. The Disney wonder is listed as one of the comparisons, but it might show exactly what your looking for in a comparison of other great cruises to Disney.

Of course its on at 2:00am EST so you better tivo it ;)

We were just on the Enchantment of the Seas in January and were on the Magic last January. We had balcony room each time. The rooms were similar in size with RCI being a little smaller and no split bathroom. Storage was similar. It didn't feel much smaller, but we also didn't have the little one with us this time. I would say that age ship the rooms are similar and I have yet to be on a Voyager class, but I am assuming, and just assuming at this point, that those rooms would be slightly larger so they would be comparable to Disney.

Our cabin was lovely! If I remember correctly, we had a Cat D6 or D7 Balcony. It was about the same size as our porthole cabin on Disney but didn't have the split bathroom. There was plenty of storage space. I LOVED that cabin!

we have been on 5 disney cruises and 1 rccl. children are 17, 15, and 13. on disney we get a cat 4 or 5. on rccl we had a balcony and an inside for $4k less than disney. the kids loved it. there were more teens and fewer small children. the food was about the same and imho the entertainment was much better because it was not disney oriented.

dh and i also loved it because we had our own room and our own bathroom.

rccl's labadee is just as nice as castaway key, actually i think it is nicer.

the children are no longer enamored by disney so i think we will be trying other lines from now on.

by the way, we were on the voyager of the seas out of miami.

We are also considering RCCL, and I read all the threads on this board about RCCL and trip reports.

So far, everyone sounds like they are happy with them, and the kids have a good time.

I am also torn because we love DCL, but the price is SO high during school break time.

If anyone has pictures of their cruise on a RCCL, I would LOVE to see them if you would share the link.

Thanks!

I'm cruising Wonder in May, and for my next cruise I've been looking at the Enchantment. Any more comparisons you can make? Our kids are 4 & 6. Thanks.

The ship is very similar in size. They seem to have almost the same measurements and tonnage. The dining room is a two story room and there is only one. There are two pools. One has a roof that opens and closes and I think is adults only. We didn't take our son so I am not sure about the kids areas. They do have an observation deck with star maps for night time viewing. They have a rock wall. No movie theater.

You should check out the deck plans for the ship after she has been stretched. The new stuff is going to be great for kids. Bungee trampoline jumping, water park, bridge out over the water, alternative dining restaurants, etc.

We enjoyed each ship, but were looking for different types of vacations from each. We used the casino, we hung out in the lounges and played the games and things like that. Which we didn't do as much of on Disney becaues our son was with us and got tired, no casino, etc. I think your children would have a great time on the Enchantment and I wouldn't hesitate to take my son on that ship as well. Especially after the changes...

If you have any specific questions, let me know.

I have included some links below. The first one has pictures of what some of the stuff will look like.

When are the making changes? This sounds interesting! A water park? Wow!

It's going into drydock in May and will be ready in June for July sailings leaving the Northeast. Should be really cool. I added some links with cool info and pictures.

My ds12 and I just came back from RCCL's Mariner of the Seas. It is a voyager class ship. We loved it! There was so much for us to do and especially for him.

The kids area is located in the back of the ship. On one side are the kids areas--they have indoor play rooms and access to decks with outdoor activities such as human checkers. There weren't as many little kids as on a Disney cruise.

The "tween" and "teen" areas are on the other side. They have a "living room" (hang out and talk, do activities, watch tv, has a soda fountain)and "fuel" (dance/activity area) plus a back deck area that is theirs to use. It is close to the arcade, mini golf, pools, rock climbing wall, sports court, inline skating. There were lots of activities for these two age groups. My son made a lot of new friends and had a great time!

I think it is a great ship for families with tweens and teens that have maybe outgrown the disney characters (please no flames, you know what I mean, the wonder and awe aren't there, instead it is ah, do I have to have a picture?). There seemed to be plenty of organized activities for the kids and they had an area all to themselves. My son and his new friends would go to the Promenade cafe for pizza and cookies at midnight.

RCCL still does soda package. We both got it and I liked the convenience of it. There are plenty of locations on the Mariner to get pop without having to make a special trip like we did on DCL (we were pre-free pop). There are bars located throughout the ship that have music and other entertainment that is fun to sit, relax and enjoy. My son went to one location so much that the bartender would have his soda--complete with cherry--ready for him!

We enjoyed the shows, especially the opening, farewell and ice show! We could have gone to the ice show twice! The late night comedy shows were good too. We went to art auctions and the parades in the promenade. We enjoyed the dining and buffets. We ate in the dining room every night--well, my son ate with the tweens/teens two nights--and enjoyed the buffets during the day. We had late seating, so would go to "tea" between 3 and 5 to help tide us over.

As for rooms, we do inside cabins as we are rarely in our room except to sleep and change clothes. It was about the same size as DCL, but we had more storage in bath and over desk area--behind the mirrors on both and on the shelf in bath. My suitcases also fit under RCL beds and they didn't on DCL.

There were plenty of deck chairs also and I thought there weren't that many on DCL. Also didn't see the "saving" of chairs like on DCL.

All in all, I would highly recommend RCCL voyager class ships if you have tweens/teens (12-17) and maybe even for the 10/11 year olds. There is also a dance club that was very popular with the 18 and up set.

Just wondering, how did you book this? Did you book directly or through a TA? If you used a TA, which one. There seems to be so many expert DCL TAs, but I'm not sure what the best way is to book a RCCL.
Thanks!
