My DD has been having really red (somewhat crusty) eyes this week. Now before you jump to pink eye like I did...it is only late evening and in the mornings. When she gets home from school they are fine. They are fine until a little after dinner and stay bloodshot until some point in the day. I thought allergies so I got her some Claritin and allergy eye drops. They did nothing. I'm going to make her an appointment today but they don't open until 9am and I wanted your thoughts. I think pink eye and allergies have been ruled out.

Oh, there are no other symptoms (sneezing, coughing, etc.) other than she says her vision seems to be getting worse as well.

Thoughts?

My only other thought is the she could have suddenly become allergic to our cats. The timing of the red eyes works perfectly with this. They are fine at school but get bad at home.

I know you said you ruled out allergies, but if you are only going by the fact that the drops aren't doing anything I wouldn't go by that. All of my kids get horrible eye allergies in the spring, drops work some of the time. We have trees budding and my dd's eyes are already starting to get itchy.

I would make an appt with an opthamolgist anyway, it could be a number of things including a virus.

ETA sorry, I see you are seeing the doc

luvmy3, she is also taking Claritin daily too. Not sure if that changes your response or not.

Having visited 3 eye doctors and used 6 different eye drops with no lasting results in a span of 7 months I can sympathize. This might sound crazy, but ask the doctor if it could possibly be an eyelash infection. I finally had to see a specialist after nobody could figure out what was wrong. Oddly enough, my husband actually diagnosed me the night before my actual diagnosis. It took the specialist 30 seconds to diagnose me. My eye has been clear for 2 weeks and no longer feel uncomfortable. My eye was always very red by the end of the day and when I woke up. I do not have long eyelashes by the way and did not notice any eyelashes getting into my eye. Might not be it, but worth a try. Good luck, hope they figure out what's wrong quickly.:flower3:

Her eyelashes are really long. They touch her glasses when she wears them. My daughter is gifted in the eyelsash department. ;)

Her appointment is with her regular physician today. She told me it is really bad today. I just hope it stays bad until her appointment.

An allergy medicine like Claritin doesn't always work instantly. You need at least 3 weeks to see a real benefit from this. It could still be both pink eye or allergies.

I would guess that it is some sort of allergy. Probably to something at home, like the cat, bedding, mold? Or possibly something like the trees or grasses. Just because the allergy medication doesn't seem to be making a differnce doesn't mean it isn't an allergic reaction.

It certainly can't hurt to see the eye doctor. If that doesn't get you anywhere, I'd call the pediatrician as well.

Systemic meds like Claritin do not get across into the eye very well.

Try an allergy-specific eye drop, like Zaditor, an anti-histamine eye medication.

My allergist prescribed me pataday for my eyes. They are prescription eye drops.

It is probably allergies. I have multiple environmental allergies and right now I have no other symptoms besides my eyes itching and red but my allergist said that my itchy eyes are definitely my allergies. For me, it is only a matter of time before my other symptoms start but you can have allergies that only affect his eyes.

And theve verdict is.....pink eye, in both eyes!

DD said she went to the school nurse during school yesterday and she told her it wasn't pink eye. :confused3

She's now on drops every 4 hours for 5 days. Glad it is an easy fix.
