Hi Everyone,
I'm contemplating the DDP for my upcoming trip. I will be traveling with 4 other adults. I've always used the TIW card, but with the price of most buffets going up was thinking of trying the DDP. I was wondering if anyone has used both and could let me know which worked out better for them. For me personally I'm not one to ever get dessert at a counter service restaurant or many sit down restaurants....I also drink water (tap) at sit down meals. The people I'm traveling with do drink soda and would probably enjoy the dessert if it was offered.

Here is where we are eating:
Tappan Edo Dinner (they don't accept TIW)
Chef Mickey's Bfast
O'hana Dinner
Boma Dinner
ESPN Club

Any suggestions would be awesome! Thanks :)

With mostly fixed price restaurants, it makes the math easy (don't have to worry about what you'll order and all that).

Before I get going, if you feel everyone would always order an appetizer (or at least often, or in place of dessert), there's a very good chance that TiW will win out. If that's the case, you can read further, but the math may not quite apply.

Assumptions
  • Party Assumptions
    • Off of DDP, no one will order desserts at QS.
    • Off of DDP, half the party will order desserts at TS
    • One of the 5 QS locations takes TiW
    • Number of meals equals the number of nights
    • Off of DDP, 3 out of 5 snacks will be purchased
  • Number Assumptions
    • QS Meal = $11, Dessert = $3
    • Snack = $3
    • All pre-calculated numbers rounded up to the next dollar
    • All post-calculated numbers rounded up to the next cent
    • Average (middle ground) for entree/dessert choice at menu service

The Math
So, right off the bat, let's look at CM, 'Ohana, and Boma.
Boma: $31
Chef Mickey's: $27
'Ohana: $31

Now, the menu places
ESPN: $12/2.5 ($5 avg dessert, but we're assuming only half the people will get dessert)
Teppan: $25/3 ($6 avg dessert, but we're assuming only half the people will get dessert)

So, we got the average prices down. Now for the math...

DDP Cost:

$42 x 5 = $210

OOP Costs

  • Boma: 31 × 1.065 = 33.01
  • Chef Mickey's: 27 × 1.065 = 28.76
  • 'Ohana: 31 × 1.065 = 33.01
  • ESPN: 14.5 × 1.065 = 15.44
  • Teppan: 28 × 1.065 = 29.82

Add these together:
33.01 + 28.76 + 33.01 + 15.44 + 29.82 = 140.04
Add the CS meals into place:
5 × (11 × 1.065) = 5 × 11.72 = 58.60
Now, for the snacks:
3 x (3 × 1.065) = 3 × 3.20 = 9.60

Add all those together:
140.04 + 58.60 + 9.60 = 208.24

Plus 18% tips (since that's the same charge as TiW)
208.24 + (131.50 × 0.18) = 208.24 + 23.67 = 231.91

Continuing on to TiW

TiW Costs: (Note, Tax is off of discounted food, Tip is off of base price)

  • Boma: 31 – (31 × 0.20) = 31 – 6.20 = 24.80, 24.80 + (24.80 × 0.065) = 24.80 + 1.62 = 26.42, 26.42 + (31 × 0.18) = 26.42 + 5.58 = 32
  • Chef Mickeys: 27 – (27 × 0.20) = 27 – 5.40 = 21.60, 21.60 + (21.60 × 0.065) = 23.01, 23.01 + (27 × 0.18) = 23.01 + 4.86 = 27.87
  • 'Ohana: 31 – (31 × 0.20) = 31 – 6.20 = 24.80, 24.80 + (24.80 × 0.065) = 24.80 + 1.62 = 26.42, 26.42 + (31 × 0.18) = 26.42 + 5.58 = 32
  • ESPN: 14.5 – (14.5 × 0.20) = 14.5 – 2.90 = 11.60, 11.60 + (11.60 × 0.065) = 11.60 + 0.76 = 12.36, 12.36 + (14.5 × 0.18) = 12.36 + 2.61 = 14.97
  • Teppan: 29.82 + (28 × 0.18) = 29.82 + 5.04 = 34.86

Add the pre-tip together:
26.42 + 23.01 + 26.42 + 12.36 + 29.82 = 118.03
Tips total:
5.58 + 4.86 + 5.58 + 2.61 + 5.04 = 23.67

Add QS Meals:

  • Non-TIW: 4 × (11 × 1.065) = 4 × 11.72 = 46.88
  • TiW: 11 – (11 × 0.20) + ((11 – (11 × 0.20)) × 0.065) = (11 – 2.2) + ((11 – 2.2) × 0.065) = 8.80 + (8.80 × 0.065) = 8.80 + 0.53 = 9.33

46.88 + 9.33 = 56.21
Now, for the snacks:
3 x (3 × 1.065) = 3 × 3.20 = 9.60

Total everything up and we get:
118.03 + 56.21 + 9.60 = 183.84
Adding Tip
183.84 + 23.67 = 207.51

And now for DDP. Since we'll add all desserts in there, we can't use the same tip amount. However, to simplify things, we can just calculate the added tip onto the current total and use that. Also, since Boma, CM, and 'Ohana is included, we don't have to worry about those. So it's another $2.50 for ESPN and $3 for Teppan (this is the other half of the 1/2 dessert from earlier):

  • ESPN: 2.50 × 0.18 = 0.45
  • Teppan: 3 × 0.18 = 0.54

Add this to the total tip amount:
23.67 + 0.54 + 0.45 = 24.66

Now, add the tips to the DDP base cost from above:
210 + 24.66 = 234.66 (c'mon, did I really just use a calculator for that :surfweb:)

Lastly, add up the value of items skipped for OOP and TiW:
QS Desserts: 5 × 3 = 15
Remaining TS Desserts: 3 + 2.5 = 5.5
Snacks = 2 × 3 = 6
15 + 5.5 + 6 = 26.50

So, let's look back and see what we came up with:

  • OOP: $231.91
  • TiW: $207.51
  • DDP: $234.66

Conclusion
(I'm going to start putting these in, to make the analysis a bit easier for the people I do it for :))
If your group would most likely be as assumed in the assumptions portion, then TiW will save you about $27. However, if you add in the value for the items on DDP that you didn't get on TiW, the difference closes to $0.50.

I'd say that the peace of mind of having everything pre-paid as well as the flexibility to order off the higher half of the menus is worth $0.50 at least ;). (Or even saying that the extra food allotted with the DDP, plus the peace of mind and ability to order from the higher end of the menu is worth the $27)

Colors used to separate out different pieces for further calculations, they don't have any real significance

(btw, /rude to whoever recently edited the Boma menu on the DIS (http://www.wdwinfo.com/wdwinfo/dining/diningdetail.cfm?restaurant.ID=197), seriously, I don't need to know that it ranges from 15-30 dollars depending on season, I need to know the price for each season... it only changes once and not by $15! Ok, rant over)
