Eurotunnel has warned of "significant disruption" to services if burning tyres on the motorway in Calais are not removed by French police.
Ferry workers had set fire to tyres on the road leading to the port to try and block the entrance to the Eurotunnel terminal, the company said.
Traffic from Folkestone on the cross-Channel rail service is not being affected, Eurotunnel said.
Day return passengers have been advised to reschedule their journeys.
French police told the BBC protesters would end their blockade at 12:00 BST.
Eurotunnel
tweeted: "The protesters have now left the motorway, but A16 from Calais remains closed as the authorities work to remove the [blockage]."
Passengers are experiencing delays, a spokesman for the company said.
Eurotunnel has advised those unable to access the Coquelles Eurotunnel terminal from the Calais direction to use a diversion which has been put in place from the Boulogne direction.
