A bill is set to go before Congress that will abolish the 22nd Article of Amendment (limits the number of terms a President may serve).

The first thought that came to my mind was "What past President wants to serve again?" The second thought was "Perhaps President Obama thinks it all can't be accomplished in two terms."

I was just wondering what other dis'ers thought about the bill and possible ramifications.

:hippie:

Won't happen.

If anything there should be term limits extended to Congress.

It will make great fodder for the tin foil hat crowd though.

Well, we already have a marxist, communist, socialist president....this would allow us to add facist to his resume. Funny, why wasnt this brought up during the Bush years??

Well, I see that the sole sponsor is Rep. José Serrano [D, NY-16]. I believe he likes to introduce these types of bills to get his name noticed.

As Paul Harvey would say "He would like for me to say his name..."

I see I did write his name. Blast. It worked. Anyway, I doubt anyone outside of his immediate family takes him seriously.

This was something that Obama mentioned in one of his speeches after he was elected - that it might take more than 2 terms to put America back on track. If Obama asks for it (formally), will he get it? If it does pass, should we worry?

Actually, the real plan is to create a monarchy and anoint Obama King. ;)

Personally, I think there should be term limits for every elected office, even state and local offices.

However, I also see the point that if there are no term limits for congress, why should there be a limit for President.

I doubt seriously this will pass, and will hopefuly fuel discussion about congressional term limits.

Congress SOOOOO needs term limits. Most of our national concerns would be be settled by a term-limited Congress that isn't more interested in campaign funds from special interests than in doing what's right for the citizens of the country. In fact, I imagine that should anyone need to launch an opposition campaign against this silly presidential proposal, all they'll have to do is point to Congress and say, "Yeah, how's that no term limits thing working out for us there?" :sad2:

I think it is a terrible idea with far-reaching consequences for our Representative Republic if Congress takes this up on their agenda.

Then again......this Congress has taken up a lot of terrible ideas with far-reaching consequences for our Representative Republic already........

Me personally, I want strict term limits on everyone in the Legislative and Executive branches of Govt (and am starting to see the need in the Judiciary also).

We have term limits-they're called elections. If you don't like the job your congress members are doing-vote the bums out!

Remember: Many Bills Are Introduced, But Few Ever Get Out of Committee.

This bill will die DOA.

Because of the election process, incumbants have a huge edge. Term limits are the only solution...

Personally, I'd like to limit terms of Congressmen & the number of Congressmen. Make it one Represenative and one Senator per State, one for each Holding (ie. Peurto Rico, Virgin Islands, Washington D.C.) The amount of taxpayer money that would be saved is mind boggeling.

Any past Presidents come to mind? At first, I thought Clinton...but I don't see it. Carter, even though a great Human Rights Activist, left too sour of a taste...was a horrible President.:confused3

I live in Texas, I've been trying. :rotfl2:

I heard Kay Bailey Hutchison is thinking of running against Rick Perry (both Republicans) for Governor next term. :scared1:

Oh yeah, he was a regular shoo-in for a third term.:lmao:

What if they run unopposed?

Then you need to work with whatever party you support and find a candidate that you can support.

I'm not in love with lifetime Congress members either, but I can't help that their people like them and keep voting them in.

That is really how I feel. I mean, Jim Wright represented Fort Worth for years and years. My family was 'Goldwater Republicans' and so never supported Mr. Wright. However, each election he won 70 percent of the vote. I would have been a 'sore loser' if I started harping on 'term limits' just because I did not like him.
