Happy Friday everyone! My interview with Richard Sherman was just put up on the blog. This is the complete interview with probably an additional third that I had to edit out for the podcast.

Things you didn't hear on the podcast include:

How P.T. Travers, author of Mary Poppins, didn't like Walt Disney's treatment of her book.

How Julie Andrews burst onto the scene in her first film role, and Dick Van **** recently reprising one of his film roles for one night in the LA production of Mary Poppins.

Richard Sherman also talked about the two different songs for "Carousel of Progress", and which one was his favorite.

In addition, Disneyland Correspondent Tom Bell, was able to go over to the Sherman Brothers window ceremony in Disneyland yesterday, and take a lot of photos. We've included those photos on the blog too.

Enjoy!

It was an exciting and emotional ceremony and I felt privileged to be there representing The DIS.

Here's one of my favorite pictures from just before the ceremony.

The gentleman in the chef's hat is Oscar Martinez. He works at Carnation Cafe and has been with the company since 1956.

Seeing him there brought it home to me about how important these window ceremonies are.

I'm assuming Oscar didn't HAVE to be there. I'm sure he was busy with the lunch crowd coming in. But he was there. Not in the VIP section. Not even on the inside of the ropes. He was just there to watch.

Thanks Dave! :cool1: I've been checking for it. Off to look and listen! :thumbsup2

Dave, I have two questions, don't know if you know, but is there any thought of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang coming to Broadway from London?

And also, how is Robert Sherman? It didn't seem he was at the window ceremony. I hope he is doing well.

I'm sure Dave can elaborate, but I can tell you that you're correct, Robert Sherman wasn't at the ceremony, but did record a message that was played.

Any of my thoughts regarding Chitty Chitty Bang Bang are purely speculation, but here goes... It's been really successful in London so I would think someone has to be looking at bringing it to North America. Maybe it would go to Toronto before Broadway? :confused3

I would have loved to ask Richard Sherman about Robert, but I never got the chance to. My understanding is they do not get along, and do not speak to each other. I've even heard it described as "their not able to stand the sight of each other outside the office" (this was from a review of "the boys" in the New York Times. Much of what the biography film "the boys: the sherman brothers' story" is about is their dysfunctional relationship and the deep and longstanding rift between them.

I really want to see this film after talking with Richard Sherman.

I've never heard that Robert Sherman is not OK, but I think he is much more introverted than his brother Richard.

Absolutly amazing blog and interview. Is there anyway to download the full interview, separate from the podcast? Just wondering, Thanks

Very interesting! I didn't know they didn't speak....but they still write music together??? Even more fascinating. I'm going to be keeping an eye out for that documentary DVD!

I Googled Richard Sherman and apparenly he is also an acclaimed painter. It also said that he lives in London. Probably why he wasn't at the window ceremony.

Dave - What a fantastic job you did with that interview. I heard another interview recently of Richard Sherman on another Disney podcast, and let me tell you, it had nothing on yours!

Tom - how awesome that you covered the Main St. window ceremony. I loved the pic you posted with Oscar front and center. Not to go off topic too much from the subject matter of this thread, but my wife and I were lucky enough to meet Oscar in Feb 2007 at The Carnation Cafe at Disneyland.

Awesome is how I described it too...only I added an extra adjective that we're not allowed to use on The DIS.

And actually Oscar wasn't front and center. We was in the front, but in one of the public viewing areas off to the left side of the VIP/Media area. About where I highlighted in yellow in the photo below. I keep thinking how happy he looks to be there.

That's Robert who lives in London. Richard lives in Beverly Hills, CA.

I saw a screening of "the Boys" at the D23 Expo. Some of the musicians from the "Tuneful of Poppins" cd performed before the movie began, followed by a surprise appearance by Richard who played some songs on the piano for us. It was an incredible evening, and the movie was quite interesting and sad. I can only imagine the pain shared by the families of the two cousins who came together to make the movie.

I also had the opportunity to attend the "Evening with Richard Sherman" performance at the El Capitan a few weekends ago. The first half of the concert featured Richard behind a piano sharing with us many stories about the songs he and Robert wrote. The second half contained selections from his new musical "Pazzazz," which is funny, light-hearted, and reminiscent of a bygone era of Broadway.

The real highlight of the evening, however, was dinner prior to the performance at the Disney Soda Fountain next to the El Capitan. My friend, who attended the concert with me, and I went on the D23 Studios and Archives tour on February 13. She had me pose for a picture with my hands in Richard Sherman's handprints in the Legends Plaza (both she and I were piano majors in college). Well, when we knew we were attending the concert at the El Cap, we decided that somehow we were going to meet Mr. Sherman and get him to sign my picture. As fortune would have it, during our dinner at the Soda Fountain I noticed a man in the back corner having dinner who looked a lot like Richard Sherman! The manager of the restaurant noticed my friend and I getting excited, so he came to our table and asked what the fuss was about. I showed him my picture and asked him if we could meet Richard. The manager escorted us to his table, and we were able to spend a few minutes with him before he had to leave to prepare for the concert. He and his wife were so gracious and flattered that he meant so much to my friend and me.

Actually, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang did open on Broadway first, a couple years ago or so. And it did poorly and closed shortly after its debut. There is a Walt Disney World connection in the original Broadway cast. One of the cast members was a regular performer at the Adventurers Club, and he has also appeared as Bruce in the Finding Nemo musical at Animal Kingdom.
