Hubs and I no longer do gifts for each other but I have to direct my family into what to buy him. His family gave up on me and sends cash which is just fine by me.
That said if I'm not at work I'm always beside him so I know what comics he reads, what video game he's on, and what album of what music group he's currently listening to, at all times. So my suggestions are gonna ummm, sound a little weird and involve some digging.
Find out what character/comic he loved as a kid and get him some nostalgic stuff.
Check his snack stash to see what his fave snack is. For my hubs he loves the chocolate palettes they sell at Trader Joes for the holidays.
If he goes to the movies try one of those movie ticket memberships and make it a double so you can go with him, or he can take a friend.
Get him a gift certificate to the place he likes to eat at that you might not be crazy about and agree to go with him.
Does he read? If so dig in the book pile and see what he might like.
Does he like putting together projects? Maybe models or Legos.
Or you can go cheesy like I did and one year had a puzzle made of a photo of us. Hubs is a puzzle person so he loved it but I admit it was corny XD
