Character's in flight payment ?

Hi there my future brother-in-law seems determined to ask me questions about Disney that I don't no the answer to.
The latest is whether or not characters in flight can be pre-booked or not.
My initial reaction was no, pretty sure you just pay when you go, but I couldn't say for detonate whether or not this was the case.

Can anyone back me up and let me know whether my first reaction was correct or not?

Since they don't know if and when it go can go up (weather issues) it is pretty much pay as you go. No reservations are available.
