Onboard the ship itself, you do not need any cash except for tips for room service, help with bags, etc.. You can charge everything else to your room and pay off your bill with a credit card.

We charge all of our tips to our room account--including room service, beverages/snacks at shows/etc. Generally the only place we use cash is to tip our excursion guides/ spend at the vendors in port. We don't buy expensive items such as jewelry/cigars/alcohol though--just a small souvenir--if anything. For more expensive purchases in port, I would definitely use my credit card.

I typically have a stack of 40-50 $1 bills for tipping purposes. Beyond that I think about where we are going on our port days, what we have planned, and budget my cash needs from there. When my brother and I split a private charter last May in Grand Cayman we paid in cash. When we did the Xrail excursion not thru the cruise line in Cozumel I brought the balance I owed in cash. Think of each day, know your activities, a and budget accordingly. That's what I do.
