Can you pay for tips with Cash?

Probably a silly question. But if you're on the dining plan, can you leave your tip with cash? I thought I read that the tips are billed on your card (or what ever it is that links to your room). Sorry it's my first visit and I'm not sure if I 'm using the right words.
