Can You Die From a Broken Heart?

Actually I think you can die from a broken heart. My grandmother was in the hospital she had breast cancer and was going down hill so she was admitted, not 24 hours later her husband my grandfather was admitted in the room next door. he was not feeling well and they could not figure out what was going on. he told us he will not leave this hospital with our his wife and we knew it was not long before she would die a day or 2 most. He went to see her and they visited and he went vack to his room and she died that night, after he learned the news in a matter of hours he died and told my mom before hand he will not leave her with out her he can not imagine life with out her( married 50+ years).

Iused to dream about my mom all the time but it seems to be stopping now.
I used to be running through a hospital and go on every floor for her cure and the docs and nurse would send me some place else so the entire dreal all I do is run carrying her from place to place to help her. The physcologist said its the guilt I have thats causing it, I am blaming my self for there not being a cure for her disease. She said i am putting alot of pressure on myself.

I lost my Dad to cancer 16 months ago. He'd been fighting it pretty successfully for 5 years, but then BANG we noted some changes -- it had spread to his brain and then it was just a matter of about 2 weeks.

If you're still even partially debilitated by the loss of your Mom 6 years ago, you really owe it to yourself and your family to seek help. Even if you were a practicing oncologist, you couldn't have possibly prevented your mom's death.

I know this probably won't help you, but one thing that helped me was recognizing the natural order of things. It is a child's duty to bury his/her parents. A parent should NEVER have to bury a child. What you and I experienced, while painful, was a much better circumstance than had it been the other way around. I saw my parents at the funerals of three of their four parents. It was very sad, but, for lack of a better word, it was "natural," the way things are supposed to be. Losing a parent is sad; losing a child is a catastrophe.

You can also try to turn your grief into a positive. My Dad died from lymphoma. My wife and I happened to take up running about a year before my Dad died, but we never really progressed beyond 2-3 mile runs, and ended up stopping completely a few weeks before he died. Well, a few weeks ago we signed up to run a half marathon with Team in Training to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. We're getting ourselves in better shape AND raising money for LLS, which will go to research to cure the diseases as well as go directly to families affected by them. Losing my Dad mobilized the both of us to raise money to fight what took him away from us.

Please seek help. And if you've been doing that, seek better help. God bless.

From the outside, we can say she had her daughter to live for but she was so devastated by her son dying, I don't think she was dealing well with it, every interview I saw she always saying she wished "God would take her, not Daniel" that she "had to be with him to help him " that she felt he was confused as to where to go after he died. They aired that interview yesterday on a show.
Her son wasn't just her son, they were buddies since he was young, he was her confidante, I know she was quirky at times, but I am in shock over how the media has been so disrespectful to her passing away. Wolf Blitzer on CNN asking another reporter the day she died "Is Anna Nicole still dead?" Is he kidding? I don't find that funny at all.
I don't know about dying from broken hearts, I've seen it happen in older people. If she was very attached to him and he was her everything, I'm sure it's possible.

I lost my 2 year old 4 months ago. My cousin lost her 21 year old. So far neither of us have turned to drugs or anything to "take the pain away".

They do say that when you are in a long term relationship (like 50+ years together) that when one dies the other usually dies within 6 months.
Just statistics. Not an opinion, don't flame me!!

Although I think you can die from a broken heart I think she died from something drug related. Maybe the trim spa weakened her heart and it finally gave out.

I have known 2 couples (much older) that soon after 1 of them past....a few weeks later the other one past on...I'm not sure if it had to do with a broken heart but who am I to judge...maybe you can?

Yes I think you can die of a broken heart. I think a prime example in the media was Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash. I lived near them in Hendersonville and it was well known that they loved it each other dearly. After June died, Johnny was not far behind her.

I thought my grandfather would 5 years ago when my grandmother died. He stuck around for 5 years. He was stronger than I thought. Overall, yes I do believe that can happen.

There is actually a name for it..."broken heart syndrome" (also known as acute stress cardiomyopathy). It can definitely be life threatening.

My grandmother died Thanksgiving of 98. My grandfather, completely healthy, died Dec 27th the same year, a month apart. He stood up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night and fell to the floor. We all believe he died of a broken heart because he missed 'mama'. You cannot be married almost 70 years and not lose 1/2 of yourself.

We all feel like he left in time to dance with Grandma on New Year's Night that year. They LOVED to dance.

Anna Nicole ~ I pray that she found peace in God's light with her son. I do feel such a loss for her daughter not knowing her mother though.

I question whether ANS had bonded yet with her daughter (it can take months for people suffering from postpartum depression to bond with their babies). I think she was going through a deep postpartum depression as well as still deeply grieving the loss of her son.

I think you can. I know my mom did. She and dad had been married for just over 50 years. My dad died on August 1, 1982. My mom died on Feb.14, 1983 in her sleep. Valentine Day had always been a big thing in her life. Dad had always done it up good. She missed him so much that she would sort of go into a trance and cry sometimes-especially remember Christmas Day with the family. We found her in another room just shaking and crying her eyes out. The night she died one of my brothers had a dream,,,,in the dream he saw mom walking toward my dad and then saw them walk off together hand in hand. Even though she never got to meet my son who was born 4 weeks earlier we knew she was where she wanted to be-with dad watching over us.
As I tell my sons she used to be over a thousand miles away but now she is right here in our hearts-no long distance needed. <g>
