My best friend is desperate to book a Disney cruise with us, but she gets terrible motion sickness. She's tried a motion sickness patch with good success on another line, but if she does come, she'd like to indulge in a few adult beverages :drinking1, and she can't if she's wearing the patch.

Any booze compatible remedies that have worked on sea sickness?

I get sea sick and basically suffer from motion sickness if I'm not in the front seat of a car. I love the sea sickness meds that are handed out by guest services on the ship.

Is she on the pill? Sorry to be personal but been there done that. Two weeks before my 7day, I knew I was in trouble when playing volleyball made me nauseated and do not begin to get me started on my husbands driving his truck.... Bllllllaaaaa

I told them "switch me tomorrow!!" Literally within the next day, all my dizziness and nausea went away and has never come back. Even when the ship moved a bit on the 7 day, it never bothered me at all. I also am mindful of my blood sugar too because that lead me to sea sickness when I would work out on an empty stomach. Now if I workout its about 4pm. Green apples are a crew remedy. I also am helped tremendously with chicken fingers. Thinks its a mix of protein and carbs.

Anyway the pill is seriously the cause for me. Not even exaggerating. I have been known for literally hugging the ground on a few of my cruises!

Also I feel quite confident she could do a 3 day Bahamian like we did. PC to Nassau Nassau to castaway castaway to PC. No sea days and not much motion at all because of being so near all the islands (unlike western along cozumel which while I love it is absolutely the worst for me for sea sickness). Tack on a day or two at WDW and even at 3 days its a fabulous trip! She could try the 4 day but it costs more and means they are wandering at sea for a day which may not be to her benefit.

Hope she gets help. BTW I always take Dramamine with me in case but I haven't needed it since my switch. However my friends still laugh about the time I took it, I was so disoriented, I kept going back and forth to each stairway because I couldn't never figure out to go around them to get to the deck lunch area. I wasn't necessarily so tired but I had to be escorted around on that stuff because I could never get my bearings. They still tease me to this day. Needless to say.it has to be really really bad for me to go there again!

PM me if she wants to know which one I changed to to clear up my dizzines and major motion sickness!

Peace.

Bonine! Otherwise known as meclizine. As with all medications you shouldn't take them with alcohol. However, meclizine is non-drowsy. I haven't had any problems with having a drink or 2 while taking meclizine on my cruises. Has she tried the Sea Bands that you wear on your wrists. Others swear by ginger chews.

BTW my friend has a famous bar tab by the end of the cruise. She never stopped wearing her transdermal patch. Not for a minute...

Ginger gum, candied ginger and ginger capsules. NASA has even used it in their space program to combat motion sickness.

I would suggest you have your friend call her doctor and ask him the best med for her situation!:thumbsup2

A few years ago my pharmacist suggested ginger. I went to the health food store a was given Pure encapsulated ginger and the. Told to take 2 capsules a day for two weeks before the cruise and then I could take up to 7 a day on the cruise. I have done this on the two cruises we have been on and never had a problem. In fact the last one we were on in March we had some pretty rough sees and I was fine. I took one at each meal and one before bed. I like the fact that it does not make me sleepy or groggy. I always use it if we are driving any length of time and it works great.

Bonine does not make me drowsy and I drink with no problems while on it also. A friend uses the patch and also drinks on the cruise with no issues..so, just do what works for you and you can probably also have a drink. I also bring along ginger candy and sea bands but have never needed to add those to my Bonine.

i'm a ginger capsules fan

I've always struggled with motion sickness - had to sit in the front in the car, felt awful on the ferry from England to France, can get motion sickness watching some films (flying sequence in Hancock for example) and have suffered from labrythitis/vertigo. I couldn't even wear flipflops as they upset my balance!! I was really worried about my cruise in the Med two years ago. I started the ginger tablets the day before, took them twice a day and I was fine!! I did however suffer afterwards - for a few days I felt like I was still on a ship! That passed though!

I use the ginger capsules and wear Seabands (wrist bands purchased from pharmacy like CVS...they do some pressure point thing). Works like a charm and I don't get all groggy/bobble headed like I do when taking Bonine or Dramamine.

Definitely the Bonine/Meclizine. My 2nd DD had horrific motion sickness as a child with pediatric opthalmic migraines, and her neurologist recommended Bonine. It is FAR superior to Dramamine, as others have noted, it does not make you drowsy, and you don't have to take it as often. Key is to take it BEFOREhand. The recommendations for ginger & sea-bands are very good as well.

Oh, and I second the advice re: pills available from Guest Services. I believe they may be Meclizine as well. My step-daughter needed something one evening, & they did the trick for her!

Lastly, I know it sounds weird, but the more one can keep their mind off the fact that you are on a ship, on the ocean, the better. We found that if we kept DD mentally engaged, it did help. Obviously, serious motion sickness is not just "in your head", & meds are important, but the mind over matter aspect can be helpful too. Good luck to your friend! I'll be she does great! :goodvibes

Great suggestions so far, hope you find one that works well for you!

If you do find yourself feeling ill on the ship, this is a terribly hard suggestion to follow when you just want to go to sleep and/or be near your bathroom in private, but try to go up on deck and get some fresh air. Deck 4 is great for this, you can relax in one of the loungers and it's usually pretty quiet out there.

For those of you that are fashion conscious, a company sells Queasy Beads. These are fashionable bracelets that work like sea bands. I am going to try these for my upcoming cruise in addition to Bonine because I too suffer from motion sickness.

A Relief Band is the best remedy for seasickness or motion sickness of any kind. My ob/gyn prescribed one for me before we went on our first cruise years ago when I was 4 months pregnant. They are difficult to find now, but are available on ebay for $150-$300 depending on whether you want the one with the replaceable battery or the throwaway type. I am very prone to motion sickness & always wear mine on cruises. The only time I ever got seasick was the night I forgot to wear it & within an hour or so of putting it back on I was feeling better. Since it is electronic there would be no issue with alcohol consumption while wearing it. I never travel without mine!:cool1:
