I booked a royal Caribbean cruise for spring break 2018. I originally booked one cabin and later decided to upgrade to another at a considerable expense just so I could hold a room number as I thought about it. Later I decided to go back to my original room booking, thinking they were like Disney and we were locked into a rate for all cabins. I found out today, if you want to upgrade or downgrade, it is at today's rates. Today's rates are over $200 higher. Very disappointed I didn't know this.

Different lines have different policies. Good reminder.

It's possible that at some point there will be a price drop. There are websites that monitor those things. As long as it's not a "new bookings only" rate if a drop happens you can switch before final payment. Or maybe you'll see a better upgrade rate.
