Booking On-site Hotel

We are going in September and have decided to book on-site for 3 nights (after all the good advice I got on these boards )
I have never stayed on-site and wondered do I book now,who with & what's the best way to get a good rate? I've heard a lot about free dining in September -how do I get this??? (sorry if this is covered elsewhere)

You can certainly book now, what you might want to do is book with a knowledgeable Disney TA, that will keep an eye on the discounts for you. I have used Dreams Unlimited and have found them to be very reliable and they have always gotten good deals for me.
Last year the free dining promotion was offered starting 4/12/07 for stays 8/26-9/22

Free dining is not a guarantee. They have used it the last couple of years to raise attendance during the slow, hurricane season. It hasn't been announced for this year yet. A TA is not needed if you prefer to do it yourself. Make your reservations now and then watch here on the DIS for special rates and/or free dining to come out and then call WDW back and change your reservations. Once a code comes out, you need to be ready to call them soon after, because the specials are only good for a particular number of rooms.

I just called last night for an unexpected trip next month. It's for my husband's business and I had six dates that we could go. I wanted a discount to save the company money (well, my husband wanted to save the company money!). I called the Disney number and after one call where the person was not that great, the second Cast Member was outstanding. We started with my number one choice of dates with the AP or AAA discount at a value. Then we went to my second choice. Nothing. Then we went to my third choice and TA DA! We are in All Stars Movies. The Cast Member was outstanding.and talked to me the whole time, finding out why I was going, etc. It was a fifteen minute phone call but it was a very pleasant fifteen minutes. He was just as excited as I was to get what I needed and at a rate that was great for us. He was even excited that I would get to see The Grass Roots for one night.
