Be aware if traveling to WDW within the next few days

I know some times of year are more risky than others, but here is a rundown of the last year. Givens: All are healthy, uncompromised immunity, we wash hands frequently, use 60+% alcohol sanitizer gels, but not phobic - don't wipe down the room, sometimes wipe tables (depends on what time we eat often early and the table was visibly just cleaned).

1973 - Dec 2007 50 + trips - no memory of illness

Dec 2007 - 10 people - 6 violently ill for at least 2 days. Ages 10 mo - 40 years. Multiple highchairs ruined, one poor magical express driver hit on the way to the airport. Our friends hit worse than us. "MICKEY'S REVENGE" dubbed by my girlfriend.

March 2008 - 6 people - 0 sick

May 2008 - 6 people - 0 sick

July 2008 - 6 people - 2 sick - upper respiratory -not GI related

October 2008 - 10 people - 8 violently ill - ages 1 -66 -my family WIPED OUT - our friends caught milder case at end of trip. Mickey's revenge is hostile!

December 2008 - 6 people - 2 violently ill with GI - ages 4 and 40. 15 mo old caught nasty upper respiratory.

At some point I'm hoping we'll develop immunity, but until then we are as vigilant as reasonably possibly and hope for the best. The reality is sometimes its just pure luck or unluck as to what germs you come in contact with at Disney!

You just described us to a Tee, about the same frequency of visiting/sick, same habits, same health, smaller traveling group, though, usually only 4. We've just sort of accepted that with this many trips, it's gonna happen sometimes. I'm always glad when it happens to me and not the kids, though, I hate to see them sick, especially when we're supposed to be having a good time...

I have a friend who is a CM down there and she had the bug last week I think? I know it was very recent that she was really sick. Didn't ask her details but she said she was miserable.

Hopefully the bug will get nipped in the bud soon.

On a side note - YUCK!!! I can't believe people would do such a thing like take a spoon up to a buffet to sample something knowing that there's a horrible stomach bug going around down there. That should've been posted on the "Grossest thing you've seen at WDW" thread! :rotfl:

We did let a CM know and they removed the items. A manager at The Mara said they have seen a larger than normal amount ofi illness.

We checked into SSR on 12/30 for 7 nights. After 2 good but crowded days at the parks, this morning DD6 started throwing up. By 1:00pm, DD3 had it. A Warning - this thing hits quick. DD went from showing no signs and actually dancing and running around at the bus stop, to getting sick on both me and her as the bus was pulling into Hollywood Studios. With 2 of the family down and 3 to go, we are a little paranoid about going anywhere after our experience on the bus this morning.

Oh well, at least we are at Disney;)

I (ek) am currently here and I have this. it is nasty. we got in yesterday and after taking a mid day rest today, this hit me full force like a truck. I haven't had a vomiting illness in several years, so to get one now on vacation is a real bummer.

this is the first time in over 8 hours I've been able to do anything but vomit violently. I feel really weak and exhausted. no fun.

nobody else in our party of 5 has shown any signs of it thankfully.

To reassure everyone worried about the spate of illness rampant at WDW, although terrified we'd get sick (as my daughter and I especially are susceptible at the best of times to stomach viruses) and having spent $Aus 7,000 on airfares as well as WDW costs, I am pleased to say we all were fine. We stayed at WL from 3rd to 11th December. :goodvibes Didn't actually see anyone sick anywhere in a resort or at the parks either. We do wash hands constantly, avoid touching all parts of face with fingers, use antiseptic wipes inbetween, use knives and forks not fingers when eating especially at buffets to avoid contaminated serving utensils (but can't avoid kids putting food back issues!). Did not disinfect room expecting Mousekeeping to be thorough (looked like they were-I was impressed with cleanliness in general) but did wash cups and glasses ourselves using brought dishwashing liquid as don't trust this.

I wanted though to say that since my daughter was frequently ill for two years when first in child care, our doc put us onto acidophilus bifidus (not then commonly available in Aus). Its a type of probiotic that helps strengthen your own stomach bacteria to fight viruses and bad bacteria. Now commonly available, marketed as Inner Health Plus (strongest one we can get by Health World Ltd) (also others by Blackmores) to name two common in Australia, we swear by these. We take a maintenance lower level dose for around one week a month and mega doses if travelling or in "risky" situations aka WDW at the moment. We know we have fought off bugs at times without succumbing when stomach flu has been raging in Aus and we believe thanks to this. Yoghurt and drinkable yoghurts like Yackult are useless as the concentrations are too low (despite their marketing). Haven't seen anyone mention this so far so for all of you going soon and worried talk to your pharmacy or health food store and take the strongest strength available for at last 3-5 days prior, during and 3-5 days on return. Every precaution helps and to save your vacation and $ spent its worth it. So very sorry to hear about all of you who had your trip spoilt and the awfulness of suffering the virus. Hope you all are 100% soon.:thumbsup2

i'm sure it wasn't intentional, but i feel like your post insinuates that you didn't get sick because you were more careful or more clean than the people who have gotten sick...which at least in my case is not true. we had read this thread and well aware of the dangers and made sure to take as many precautions as we could and it still happened.

also, to all the people who say they didn't see any sick people while in WDW, i'll say that at least in my situation, nobody in the rooms around me or the parks have seen me sick...because i can't even leave the bed! and if the other people who have had this bug feel as bad as i have, i doubt they're wandering out in public either. :sad1:

I remember going to Las Vegas in 2006 and originally planning on staying at the Flamingo. It was a good thing I checked in at the AIRPORT kiosk desk!
The Norovirus was wiping out Flamingo guests LEFT AND RIGHT and nearby Barbary Coast and Ballys Hotel/Casino
We got a free upgrade to Caesar's Palace because of it. I think our third day there Flamingo actually stopped accepting new guests entirely to cleanse the place. We met plenty of people whom were diverted to other (Now Harrah's) properties.
We never got sick thank goodness!

I dont really think Au Wendy was saying anything negative towards you aor any others stricken with this. Just offering helpful advice to those who have yet to arrive. Maybe you are just sensitive because you feel like you did everything right and still became ill???? I know if I were you I would be a mess. Hope you feel better soon!:cloud9:

Thank you so much "Aussie Wendy" for your suggestion concerning acidophilus-bifidus, and also bringing along dishwashing soap for the hotel drinking glasses, etc. which we hadn't previously considered.
After traveling such a long distance, I am glad you & your family enjoyed your trip.

Did ya ever notice how just reading this for an hour makes you feel queezy!! LOL.

Curious to know if this bug has run it's course - we aren't there until March but I believe I am there on business the end of this month.

In 2006 both of my DD's had it (but we brought it with us as they had it the first night we arrived) and we were on the dining plan!! I kept telling myself that on the positive side I wouldn't gain weight, the bathroom was close enough to sprint to, that at least the DD's could lay in the sun outside of the Hotel Room for some vitamin D, and if you gotta be sick....might as well be at the happiest place on earth.

I was surprised that Mousekeeping did not have any lysol I could use nor could I buy it at the sundry shop at the resort. They did graciously give me extra bedding for reasons I care not to discuss. It ran it's course, my prayers were answered and DH and I did not get it, and the last 4 days of our trip we were able to put it in the past. I now travel with Lysol everywhere I go - they make those little travel size cans!

For those who are ill at WDW, be brave.....think magical thoughts and it will be over in a day or so....... :flower3:

I am thinking about planning a very last minute trip to WDW leaving on the 11th of this month, and I am wondering is this virus as widespread as it is made out to be or is it just isolated? Main reason behind my asking is because I have a very sensitive digestive tract, even to the point where a few years ago they found pre cancerous cells in my intestine. Hence why I am wondering if this is the time to travel to my favorite vacation destination? thanks for your replies.

You can't not live your life because you're scared of stuff like this. Just be prepared.

And I say this as one of the ones who got hit with Mickey's Revenge.

We just booked our next trip in feb :thumbsup2 .

We also were a little nervous about taking our last minute trip to WDW after reading about the virus. We arrived on Dec.26 and checked in at POP for 4 nights and then transferred to the BC for the remaining 3 nights and I am happy to report after arriving home late last night that none of us got sick.We washed our hands often and my wife kept spraying lysol everywhere.Btw mousekeeping did an excellent job in our rooms at both resorts....:upsidedow
