Avis rental car at Port in St. Thomas?!

Has anyone rented a car at the Port in St. Thomas? We've been to the Island several times and never really explored. Renting a car sounds good...but we don't want the hassle of chasing it down. The Avis office is at "Al Cohen's Mall, cruise ship dock." I thought we docked at Havensight mall. Help! We want to get off the ship, walk to the Avis office and head out on our way. Any experience you can share?

The Avis location is a short walk from the ship. You walk thru the Havensight Mall and cross the street. They are on the corner across from a large alcohol store.

I have rented from them 2 or 3 times. You are aware that they drive on the left side of the street. If not comfortable with this be sure you get the insurance. We usually rent our own car and do our own thing. One time we drove to St John and did SNUBA. Not much time to do other things if you make the trip to St John. The other time we drove to a dive shop we have used in the past and did a couple SCUBA dives with them. Our family was the trip. Much better than being on a boat with 20-30 other divers. After this we went to Megans Bay, stopped by the Dairy for a great milkshake and went shopping.

Cars were clean, but many scratches, dents and such so make sure you inspect and note damage carefully so you don't get charged.

We will be renting from them again the end of October.

You drive to the ferry in Red Hook, then you can drive to St John.
