Atlantis- eta question re: pool use/day pass at #9

Hi All!
I'm reading a lot of conflicting info re: Atlantis. I have read, and likely agree with, that it is not worth doing the DCL "tour" of Atlantis, that you can just go there and walk around.

I have also read in the past that you can't just walk around.

My inclination is to stay on the Wonder when we stop at Nassau. However, maybe taking DMom (65) and DS (twins 10) to walk around Atlantis (not the paid admission aquarium) for an hour or so might be a nice diversion.

What have you done? Can you just take a cab to Atlantis and walk around? How much would the transportation run?

You can definitely go to Atlantis and just walk around. The taxi fare is $4.00 per person, each way. The resort is huge and you could easily spend at least an hour just walking around, looking at the beautiful landscaping as well as being able to see into some of the aquarium pools from above. The inside of the resort is impressive as well.

Just got off the Wonder last week.

For sure you can walk around the Atlantis. They have a Casino and a very impressive aquarium that you can only see parts of without a tour or a room.

They have a very impressive pool area. Actually to call it a pool is doing it a big disservice. Its more like a water park.

You can not use these pools unless you are staying at the Atlantis or its sister hotel the Comfort Suites (there are wrist bands you must have in order to use the pools.

While a room at the Atlantis is very expensive ($400+) a room at the Comfort Suites can be had for a bit under $200. I got a 'day room' when we were in port at Nassau. I took a cab there. Checked in and checked out in one transaction... my room would not be available until later (but I know others that did get a room that AM)... I never did bother getting my room... they then give you a pink card... you walk down the block (like a 1/4 mile) to the Atlantis... you can walk thru the hotel and casino... and the aquarium (you have rights with the pink card)... then to the pools... you have to find the towel shack (or whatever its called)... show them the pink card and they give you the wristbands and towels... then you can have fun fun fun.

You can waste $200 on the DCL Atlantis excursion on a familyand not have the use of the pools... I give the $200 to Comfort Suites. As the pools are not to be missed.

I thought if you're not an Atlantis or Comfort Suites guest or paying to see the aquarium/dig you're only allowed in the casino and shops? We had wristbands when we were there last Dec although I know I've read posts by people who have walked around the property without being a guest. But if you're stopped by a staff member and have no wristband or no room key I'm assuming they'll tell you you're not allowed on the grounds (it seems as if I've read that on cruisecritic).

You can take a taxi or a watertaxi to Atlantis. We had an independent guide who took us all over Nassau and Atlantis. At Atlantis he gave us a tour of the hotel, the "free" portion of the aquarium and took us through the casino. He even let us wander a little on our own (not attached at the hip) so a couple could pick up pictures and the rest of us had to kill a little time waiting on them. He actually had to go get them after so long.

Does anyone know...if you do get a day room, how many pool passes can you get? If they honestly don't care, we do have a large group sailing with us, could be worthwhile if we could share the cost

It's either 4 or 5 per room. That gives you access to the pools, slides and the aquarium/dig area.

I think I have read here and on cruise critic that folks have gotten really good "specials" rates at Atlantis......maybe via Hotwire? And at $200 for the less expensive hotel, five folks for the day at a waterpark for $40 each is a pretty good deal, I think.

Hi Jen,

We did the Comfort Suites route a few weeks ago. While we were looking for the towel stand for the wrist bands, not one person asked us for ID. So I guess it is random. We are planning to repeat this again next summer. The kids had a ball. We even skipped our scheduled dining room dinner to stay a little later. (We ate upstairs and had a great dinner.) The only thing we didn't like was that there were more smokers than we are used to, and there were lots of birds (which I am afraid of).

Enjoy your cruise. I only wish it would have been the 7 day again.

We were definitely stopped by security on our way from the Comfort Suites to the towel stand to get our wrist bands--and let me just say, security at the Altantis is not nice!! We were stopped twice by security basically yelling at us! The hotel though, was falulous. The other posters are correct--pool area doesn't begin to describe this place. We had a great day--just be sure to use lots of sunscreen.

Hi Shirley, great to hear from you! Did you just do a "day room" at Comfort Suites, and is that actually different from booking a "room"? Glad you had a great trip. I'm cancelling our 7 nite at Christmas, but hooking up with some great Dis friends for this little Wonder jaunt with Mom and twins. I can't believe how excited I'm getting since I changed my ressies. On board we'll book for next year at New Years ($$$yikes) - something to look forward to!

Interesting, CS was putting a 2-night minimum on their reservations for a short time a few months back. A Nassau expert on cruisecritic thought it was to control the number of guests during the initial opening of the new pool/slide area at Atlantis. I don't know why they would be putting this minimum on again in January. I would definitely keep checking back.
