Atkins vs Weight Watchers

    Hiya Guys -

    I have been on the WW diet for about a year and in that time I have lost most of the weight that I would like to lose.

    After reading all the positive feedback on these boards I bought an Atkins book from Amazon and it arrived yesterday.

    Well, after I read the first few pages it looked as if this approach would suit me.

    My question is, given the fact that my mind is in WW mode could I have some helpful hints and a little explanation of the things that I should be doing and what I can expect to be happening to my body over the next few weeks - this is just until I can get my mind round the approach and until I can finish the book.

    <b>minniespal</b> Before you switch from WW to Atkins you need to think very seriously and ask yourself some questions.

    1. Are you going to be able to live without sugar, flour and other refined carbohydrates for the rest of your life? Or at least be willing to go back on induction everytime you eat something that contains refined carbohydrates?

    Atkins has to be a lifetime change. If you really don't want to give up refined carbohydrates then WW will work better for you.

    2. Are you considering switching to Atkins as a "quick fix"? Because, if you <i>are</i>, there is something about Atkins you need to know. If you use Atkins as a short term eating plan, when you go back to eating sugar and flour you will gain weight faster than you thought possible. Are you willing to risk that?

    I am not trying to discourage you. I just want you to be informed.

    Starting Atkins after following a low fat diet can cause you to lose slowly. On the other hand, losing very slowly is the best way to lose and keep the weight off.

    If you decide to follow the Atkins nutritional plan, there are many WISHers who will be happy to advise you and encourage you along the way, including me.

    Atkins is not for everyone but it is the perfect plan for <i>me</i>. If it is the perfect plan for <i>you</i> then you will be very happy with the results you see. Weight loss is a happy side effect, the improvement of your overall health is the real benefit of Atkins :)

    Let us know what you decide to do. As always, regardless of what eating plan you follow, your WISH friends will be right here waiting to help you along the road to goal.

    Kath...I had No idea...maybe this is the Exact reason I am having so much trouble losing weight. My whole life I have eaten "low fat". (not that it did much good). Hummm...something I had not thought about.

    minniespal I am sure you find some real gems in the Atkins book. However, if WW has been working for you, I would be careful about going over to Atkins full throttle, since the calorie count on Atkins might be higher than what you are used to.

    Instead I would suggest incorporating some Atkins theories (bumping up your protein, but make it lean protein and count the points/ cut back on sugars and flour, etc...) into your WW program.

    I think others here may have done similar things and may be able to provide more info.

    While losing weight via the regimen you plan to use (albeit modified to some extent) for the rest of your life is a fine approach, it isn't the only path to success for weight management. Indeed, research shows that morbidly obese people, for example, are better off losing their excess weight quickly, using means that no one would consider for a lifetime, and then transitioning to a lifetime diet regimen from there. So as long as that transition is part of the plan, and you live up to that plan, starting with Atkins and using it to lose a substantial amount of weight, if that's what works for you, could conceivably be better than struggling to find success with approaches that don't work for you.

    Thanks Everyone -

    For your kind comments and advice. Switching from Weight Watchers to Atkins is not a decision that I have made without much thought and research. Although WW has worked for me, to some degree, it has not been without problems. I am constantly hungry and find myself reaching for something else to eat not long after having a meal. I constantly crave sweet things and high-carbohydrate foods.

    After reading a little more of the Atkins book, the foods that are mentioned are foods that I would eat usually.

    I do feel that at this stage in my life that I can be committed to this approach, for life.
