.I have recently returned from the US, having taken my iPad in the hope that I could find and buy a prepaid micro-SIM card that would enable me to use the iPad to browse the internet. Despite searching numerous stores (such as AT&T), no such thing appears to exist there.
I was able to use free Wi-Fi services to connect to the net but this would not allow me to download maps and use the GPS to get directions while on the move. As a tourist, I can't sign up for a contract with US service providers. Is there any way
I can connect to the net with my iPad while I'm on the move the next time I'm in the US?

The solution is not too complicated. An AT&T micro-SIM card will restore full functionality for your iPad 3G in the US.
What you want is a prepaid mobile broadband plan, available through any AT&T outlet (att.com /storelocator). To activate your account, AT&T requires a credit card with a US address and the solution for travellers is to buy a VISA prepaid card (usa.visa.com /personal/cards/prepaid), available from most friendly convenience stores.
Because these cards do not have a pre-assigned address, you can enter the address of your hotel at the prompt during the AT&T activation process.
Apple Support has step-by-step instructions (support.apple.com /kb/HT4157) to walk you through the AT&T activation.
