Are the elevators on Dream really that bad?

Hi there dearest disboarders! Well I have booked my first ever cruise, it is a b2b on the Dream! Sept 29-Oct 6.

We have a handicapped room # 8588. I will have a scooter and my friend will have an electric wheelchair. Stairs are not an option for us.

After reading many of the reviews on here I am worried that we are going to be spending a lot of time waiting for an empty elevator. We are willing to take separate elevators. How big are the elevators?

I am just wondering how many full elevators that stop on our floor should we let go by before begging a few people to get off so one of us can get on or do you even think we will have a problem?? :confused3

Thanks for any advice you may have!

I did not find the elevators that bad at all....I would suggest avoiding the mid-ship elevators... hubby and I we were often on elevators by ourselves. The ones on the Dream are bigger than the Magic and Wonder.

As MJ said, the Dream elevators are better than the ones on the Magic/Wonder. The forward and midship elevators are not that far from one another so I would opt for the forward ones during peak times. As far as asking people to get off, there will be kind souls who will step off for you without asking. I would be hesitant to ask people to get off because you don't know their situation and might be putting them on the spot. They may appear mobile but may have health issues that prevent them from using the stairs as well. I understand you have no other option and I would (and have) let people take my spot in an elevator but I might be a little put off if someone asked me for it.

I third what was said above. Avoid the mid-ship elevators and you will have a much better time. Also if you can leave in advance for shows and dinner it will also make it easier for you to catch a elevator...they get worse as you get closer to different events. While we did wait a few times on the Dream we were never late for any events, even leaving last second, due to the elevators.

Agreed! I actually find it rude to utter anything about it. I'm a 24/7 wheelchair user and no hair on my head that would even consider asking others to vacate an elevator for me, ever. It's none of my business why somebody uses an elevator or stairs, let alone the real risk of poorly misjudging books on it's cover. Sure, they are busier on peaktimes, but so are the stairs. That's just common sense. As it's my life, I'm responsible for taking care of getting myself where I need be on time. I simply plan accordingly and thus go to my destination a bit earlier or later to beat the rushmoments. Never failed once.

As far as sharing goes; you will not be riding together. Simply no room. Again, it's just something to plan for accordingly. A friend and I did on our 7-nighter (I use a powerchair and she a manual) and never had a problem. We always ended up where we needed to be when we needed to be. Most of the times actually being one of the early ones . We took about a 15 minute chance to our "destination time", keeping ourselves on a schedule of 15 minutes earlier than dining was scheduled or a rush for the show would be in full swing. Same thing for any and all experience with big(ger) crowds. Just plan accordingly, have some common courtesy, realise there are many more folks aboard wanting to enjoy the same and basically take responsibility for your own life and enjoyment. Just like each and every person does or should do onboard and on land. ;

I apologize, I was not intending to be rude.

This is my first cruise ever and I am a little bit scared and nervous about things. I was just asking for some advice.

Thanks to those that mentioned using the fore and aft elevators, even though the midship ones will be right outside of our cabin, I will remember to use the other ones.

My other thought is to do what I end up having to do on the 4th floor of the Contemporary, which is catch an empty elevator going down and staying on it till it gets back up to the floor I need or vice versa.

Thanks again everybody!

I don't think they were talking about you.

We really had no problems on the dream other then show times!

Just think about 1200 people all trying to get there and back in the same 10 minutes. lol

It was a mad house.

Just go a little early and hang out a few minutes late.

I know this doesn't help you, but many people would run up a floor and catch it there.

Definitely avoid mid-ship elevators if possible. I found the Dream elevators to be better than the magic & wonder. However, I did over hear some of the people using scooters or wheelchairs that many of the doors were too difficult to use to get around the ship (up top), but there is a side of the ship that worked better than the other. Sorry, can't remember if it was the right side or the left.

Mid ship elevators were the worst. I did see a couple of people get out to make room for someone in a wheelchair and then they got back in if there was room. :) I wouldn't worry about it too much. You'll be fine and have a great time!:goodvibes
