Anyone listen to Dave Ramsey yesterday?

He had a girl on that worked at Dillards and her concern was that they were making her push the Dillards credit card.. She asked Dave what she should do, Daves advice was to find another job, to not do something that you don't believe in..

Then the very next commercial was for a debt relief program, the very same type of company that Dave rightfully rips on a daily basis. Maybe he should practice what he preaches? :)

I bet it was not a national commercial. It was probably a commercial that the local radio station put out. Dave Ramsey can't do much about that. Radio stations are allowed to sell airtime to other advertisers to fill the local spots.

Yes, he has commented about that in the past. He said he can't do anything about who the locals decide to put ads on for during his show.

Lori P. :)

why would he have more say over the XM radio system than regular syndication?

:sad2: How is that advice helpful?

Sounds like it is the only advice to give.

Hawking the store CC is part of retail stores that offer a CC..telling her to not offer it, or to advise customers against it--would be advising her not following her job requirements.

If you can't agree with your job--find a new one...seems to be pretty common advice to give.

I agree. On the list of moral objections worth quiting your job over (which, in my book in very fiscally irresponsible), pushing a credit card isn't that much of a biggie. Also, if it's that big of a deal, I kind of think you'd know about it ahead of time- if I took a job at Macy's, I fully expect to hawk their cards.

I have to agree

I think the point was -- the CALLER felt that pushing the credit cards was morally wrong. If she feels that way, then she needs to find another job and not do something that makes HER feel slimey.

The caller would probably have to get out of retail sales all together if she is offended by having to sell things that are morally wrong.

IE...She couldn't work at McDonald's and feel right about "hawking" fries or a soft drink for fear of health complications to her customers.

I worked at Blockbuster while in college and was told to "hawk" candy and popcorn with every rental.

It's not really high-pressure stuff. You just offer it and if they say no...you move on. It's not like you are trying to sell timeshare condos and you corner them in an office for 45 minutes to sign up for a credit card.

But...She may not fell that these things are morally wrong, but may feel that credit cards are. I didn't hear the caller, so I can't judge the conversation, but if it's bothering her to do that, then I agree with Dave.

you are right. She would probably have to get out of retail sales because there is hardly a store in the world left that isn't pushing their own credit card at the Cash Register.

However, she might not feel that candy and popcorn are morally wrong. That would depend upon her own value system.

There can be high pressure on employees to hawk credit cards. When I worked at Victoria's Secret years ago, we had dollar amount goals of merchandise to sell and also a number of credit cards we were supposed to open during our shifts.

I have heard him say many times that he has no choice what commercials they run during his program, that the individual radio stations decide that, so not to think that he endorses anything that is advertised during his program.

I used to work with a girl who said she previously had worked in a jewelry store and they were told to encourage financing diamonds, etc. She said she had a hard time doing that because people would come in that she knew could not afford a diamond, and she didn't feel right advising them to finance an expensive purchase like that and she finally quit.

I used to work for Dillards I still shop there. They do NOT push credit cards that hard. (Is Dave planning to support this girl????) This girl reminds me of a guy who used to work for me. He lost his job because, he did NOT believe in the use of credit cards. So we told him he could finance his travel himself or he could use the card the company provided. Well that worked for about two weeks, when he couldn't come up with the $1,000 he needed for a trip... He was still on the "probationary" 90 day period and we basically told him either or... he left a good job, got one making 50% less with no advancement opportunity.... But he emailed us about once a month with "sermons" on how we were WRONG for using credit cards!

Credit cards are NOT BAD!!! They are pieces of PLASTIC. THEY DO NOTHING WITHOUT YOU!!!! Blaming the credit card is not realistic. It did not walk to the store and charge on it's own!!!

(And if someone would PAY Dave he would be GLAD to endorse them. His morals are "shifting" LOL!)

I was listening on XM radio to Dave's show during the call in question. The girl was working her way through the debt snowball and had gotten herself an extra part time job at Dillard's. She said that she didn't feel comfortable with the store's policy that she was required to put some pressure on the customers to sign up for a credit card.

Dave told her that it sounded like she was feeling badly because she was conflicted between doing what is expected by the employer and her personal feelings against credit cards. He indicated that if it was him - he would find another part time job that did not conflict with his personal feelings. That he couldn't work for a company that he didn't feel comfortable doing what was expected and being a member of the team. Just like he doesn't accept credit cards for purchases from his website, etc.

I have also heard him say that the commercials on XM radio are not endorsed by him. He said that only the commercials that have his voice are the ones that he endorses. He has stated that he has no control over what XM radio or local radio stations put into the breaks.

Anyway - I have been listening to Dave Ramsey for a few months now and just looked at this board tonight on DIS and was so surprised that there was a Dave Ramsey thread.

Can't wait to see what other interesting information is out here.

Thanks,
Jennieb

Seems odd. Jewelry financing, in our experience and DH's knowledge, is one of the hardest things to get approved. We were able to finance a 15K car, but not a 2K ring. So if you can get approved, in our experience and DH's knowledge, you pretty much CAN afford it. :confused3

Im my opinion, Dave has HORRIBLE financial advice, but does play well to his target group. I suppose I have listened to him enough to realize he is a salesman first, talk show host second. He thinks payday loans and credit cards are a ripoff, but turns around and sells 25 cents worth of envelopes for $10 or $20... :)

The most amazing thing about his show is that I have NEVER heard a caller disagree with him or point out flaws.. Whoever screens his calls must do a great job!

That said, I do listen to and enjoy his show for nothing else than motivation to keep our ship sailing correctly..

His calls are very well screened. There is little about Dave that isn't "well manufactured" (I had friends who worked for him. According to them, Dave would sell his mother for a buck. He wasn't a loved boss either. And always remember and ENDORSEMENT by Dave means only that DAVE GOT PAID!!!)
