Anybody else get annoyed?

To the nine yr old I would respond, "Well we didn't rack up huge debt going to drug rehab like your mommy or have to pay out hundreds a week in child support like your daddy, so we have money left over to take our kids to WDW." Then let that trickle back on its own time

But I'm generally anti-social.
LOL!
That's awesome!

We get this a lot recently and we haven't even went once yet! We're planning a 12 day trip next year with my dad, my DH, and our four children. Most people who are rude about know the major struggles we put up with the past two years. We had a period of joblessness, homelessness, legal matters, and my oldest son living away from us for about 6 months (long confusing story but bottom line is that DH isn't his bio dad but wants to adopt him. Bio dad is a loser but still wants his "rights") so our family went through a lot of crap.

Recently we got a bit of help from the VA since my DH is a veteran and they helped us find a wonderful home we can actually BUY instead of just rent. He got his job back and just received a promotion and he's going to school. The VA pays for all of his schooling through the GI Bill so any grants or loans he gets back. So we decided to jump start our vacation account with some of his loan money and take our family someplace they've always wanted to go to help us all heal from the last couple of years.

We're paying for my dad to go so we can repay him for how much he helped us and stood by us when we had no one.

Are there people who think using loan money to go to disney world is stupid? Sure. I bet some are even on this board. Do I care? Not a bit. After watching my kids suffer the way they did, I'd go into any amount of debt to see them believe in magic again. It's all about what your priorities are. Bottom line: it's "our" money and we will spend it how we want. No one else has to pay our bills or pay this loan back ( which won't happen until my husband actually gets a job with his degree under the terms of his loan) so it's none of anyone's business.

Enjoy your yearly trips! It's our goal to be able to go at least every two years!

I would just ignore it and move on. We have had people ask why we don't go elsewhere and why is it always Disney. I politely explain it is not always Disney as we take two vacations and the other is normally someplace else. The most common answer to that is "It must be nice?. My response..........Yes, it is....and we are saving for college as well! That usually stops the questions.

Do what makes you and your family happy. I have seen too many cases where illness, injury or even death have cut short opportunities to spend quality time with family and friends. Not for us. We plan to spend time together doing what we love while we can and can afford it.

Happy and safe travels! Tell Mickey I said hello when you get there and we'll be seeing him in August.:thumbsup2

I get annoyed with my in laws, I talk about Disney alot, I grew up going once a month for the weekend and a week in the summer always staying at a Disney resort. I said my first word at Disney, learned to ride my bike, learned to drive, had my first kiss. I grew up there and it is and will always be a huge part of me. I live in MN now and I know it's unrealistic to think I can go as much as I did growing up but I do make it a point to go once a year for a week. DH and I don't have any kids yet but when we do I want them to have the same amazing memories I have of Disney as a child. My in laws on the other hand think im crazy they don't understand how a grown women can love Disney so much and how I don't get bored of it. The more I try to explain it the more annoyed I get with it.

I can totally relate to this thread.
I used to get annoyed, but no more,it's not worth it.;)

As pp said,haters gonna hate!
My wise dd says,if you haven't got anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.:cool1:

I shall list a few of the comments-

Why?
You must have more money than sense!
You must be rich!
You should've paid off your mortgage early instead!
you don't need to go there!
You're going there,again?
I wouldn't spend THAT amount of money on my whole vacation, never mind just for tickets!
You should spend money on-new house,New car,home decorating,etc

And so it continues. I tend now to only mention our trips to those who "get it".
The negatives far outweigh the positive comments, but they can all do as they please, and we'll continue to do what makes us happy.
:yay::yay::yay::yay:

I go to WDW every year, this year we did DL in March and will be doing DCL and WDW in July, My family and friends always get on me for my vacations, I actually find it amusing and take it as a complement that they are so indulged in finding out how me my wife and three boys always go on vacation.....and by the way we are far from rich or even well off, we are just smart savers and we have our priorities.

I have never had anyone question us about how we can afford to go to Disney so often. All of our family and friends know DH has a high paying job so it is no mystery how we afford it.

But I do have ppl make the comment "you are going to Disney AGAIN, why?"

You know what. If people ask either of those questions they have never had the full Disney experience. My family is not wealthy and recently times have been tough but we budget and find great deals and make it work. It is so nice to put our daily worries aside and go to Disney where everyone is not only treated equal but like a princess! Whether we are staying in a value resort or a deluxe the staff, resorts, food, transportation, attractions and everything is just amazing. The ah factor!

We recently thought about traveling internationally and when we consulted with our kids they said they didn't want to waste money to go there. They could see that country and have more safe and fun experiences at wdw. I just smiled because I was thinking that too.

I love your post.::yes::

We live in the UK,so we are travelling internationally. However,it's not to broaden our horizons,it's to experience the wonderful world of Disney, and we're delighted to be able to do so.
In fact, last night my ds was humming the loop music from epcot- i told him,I'd never loved him more!:lmao:

We get this a lot too. To make matter worse we also own a vacation home on a lake.

What people don't know (and I don't feel I need to explain) is that I inherited the vacation home when my grandmother died. Trust me, I rather have my Nana than her home.

We don't drink, smoke, go to the casinos, own new car or the latest in electronics. I can't tell you when the last time was that I saw a movie in the theater. We eat at home, pack our lunches every day, don't buy something unless we need it (and its on sale) and will even buy used items rather than buying new. DH and I do all our own yard work and house work and since DH is handy we usually don't have to hire someone to make minor repairs around the house.

We save money specifically for vacations, just like we do for general savings, retirement, college for the kids, etc. It's a line item in our budget because its important to us.

Sometimes I feel like telling people if they quit drinking, smoking, going to the casino, buying new cars, eating out, etc. they could afford to go on vacation too!

So true! Don't you want togo all Matlock on them and say, "well now lets see. How much did that pack of cigarettes/that latte cost? And how many of those would you say you have in a week? A month? And now, is that a new phone?....etc..." proceed until you get to the punchline "I found your trip to disney!"

We get that all the time! People ask how we afford it too. I have extra taxes taken out so my tax return is bigger and we that for our trips . If I tried to just save it myself it would get spent! But it works for us and and we just let thm say what they want. I can't hear them when I'm on Pirates!!!!

DH just changed his exemption status so we can do this too. Our tax refund will be our dining/spending money while at disney. He just got a slight raise so the reduction in take home pay won't really affect our daily lives.

To the OP, I'm proud of you for saving money and making memories with your kids. That's what matters, the other people are either jealous, or just love to hear themselves talk. Some people are cheeky buggers. If you are familiar with Wind in The Willows, they remind me of weasels.

Thank you so much :)

Yeah, it used to bug me. I think the one thing that was said that bothered me the most was:

"Lisa, It's time to give it up. Your kids are too old to enjoy Disney anymore."

As of right now, my kids are: 11, 6 and almost 2.... and the comment was made by my mother who has never been. So...just to prove her wrong, I'm saving so she can come with us on our next trip so she can see what it really is all about. Ok and so she can watch the boys so I can have a grown up night with the hubby :)

Kids are never to old for disney .. If my mum now took me on holiday there I would be so happy :) lol
I will never get bored of going there and there is always something new to experience :)
It's worth every single penny saved, worth every night out I've missed out on , every sacrifice made . Until you have been and experienced it for yourself you have no right to pass judgement :) x

AGREED!!! I think about other options and let my kids have a voice in where we may go. They are not interested in many other places except Disney. Most of the time, when we are on our way home, they are already planning what we will be doing on the next trip there...
We scrimp and save so we can enjoy our time as a family and i love taking pictures with Mickey each time we go to see how much my boys have changed. I am sure there will come a point where they want to go somewhere else but for now, our every other year trip to Florida it is!!!
