Researching the prospect of buying into DVC but want to buy VWL points. Is there any advantage to buying through Disney VS buying through resale? Thanks!

1. You generally close faster.

2. The chances Disney pulls out at the last minute are pretty much nil. The chances whomever owns "your" contract backs out are somewhat greater than nil.

3. You won't pay closing costs through Disney.

4. You get a nifty backpack.

You cannot buy VWL points through Disney unless you are already a DVC member. So if you aren't a DVC member and have your heart set on VWL, you will be buying resale.

As was pointed out, VWL is sold out so no new memberships can be bought there from Disney....resale market is the way to go if this is where you want to stay the most.

Disney doesn't treat a resale member any different than a member who bought through them. They have identical rights and are really the same in Disney's eyes.

So the main thing is figure out where you want to stay the most. If it is not currently being sold by Disney, then the resale market is the place to go.

Good luck!

If a "backpack" is worth $500-$1500 to you, then I'd go with DISNEY....:p:p :p :p :p :p :p. If it isn't apparent, we've bought 2 resales:D :D .......

Not mentioned yet is that if you need to finance, and you buy through Disney, then they will finance for you.

If you buy resale, you must find your own financing. (Home equity loans work good for this).

One more thing....

Disney can be flexible on how many points you buy and - to a lesser extent - what use year is available. If you need 236 points exactly with an April use year, its going to be hard to find a resale contract for exactly that. So with a resale you will look for a range of points. There are lots of contracts sold resale in even numbers (150 and 300 seem especially popular, 230 at OKW - IIRC that was the minimum purchase at one point in time). But if you go looking for 236 points, you'll probably end up with 240 or 250.

There are relatively few VWL contracts sold via resale - the lodge is new, and its small, so there aren't a huge number of contracts - which doesn't mean give up hope - it just means you may need to be extra patient, or extra flexible, or extra lucky.

To some extent, buying resale is kind of like house hunting. You need to be patient to get what you are looking for. You may get a good deal, but don't fret too much if a house nearby sells for a little less (or a little more). The exterior may be yellow when you really wanted brown. You may not close in 30 days, the seller, the realtor, the closing company, and the bank may not move that fast. And occationally, the people decide not to sell after all and you get to start over with another offer on another house.
