This time next week, my family and I will be entering the lobby of the Poly to start our wonderful vacation.
So excited!!!!!:yay::yay::yay:

Have a great trip :cool1:.

We are staying at the Poly for the 1st time and have a Garden View room. There are 5 of us with a double stroller. Which Longhouse do you recommend for two adults and three kids? Thanks!

We stayed in Samoa and loved it for the convenience as it's just steps from the GCH, volcano/quiet pools, the beach, and Captain Cooks :goodvibes.

We will be too :yay::yay::yay:

My DH and my DD (6) and I will be there on Tues and Wed and then leaving on a Disney Cruise on Thurs :scratchin here's hoping that works out :thumbsup2

Have a great time at the Poly as well as on your cruise :wizard:.

We are staying at the Poly march 4-6 and requested Samoa, will it be done refurb by then? should I request another building?

I thank everyone on here for all your help and advice. I am so excited to stay here that I am thinking of cutting some time in Clearwater to extend our stay at the Poly!!!

We got back from our quick trip last night! Here are a couple of items to note (this was our 5th stay at the Poly and our first stay was in 2007):

- Online check in: I have done online check in for most of my stays at the Disney resorts since they started this service. At the Poly, including this time, I was granted my request - Tokelau, patio room. I love it because I walked right up to the counter (after being escorted inside - I don't like that by the way, it's creepy and I'd rather them spend money on other benefits at the resort), received my packet, talked to a CM to verify all was as we needed it (she was willing to make changes to anything if needed and possible), and we were on our way to the room in 3 minutes!

- COLD!!! Oh my, we got a cold front from Sandy and it was also windy. We were not able to enjoy the pools because of this and I realized that I really would have liked a hot tub at the Poly. It's the only time I've ever felt this way. I'm usually not a hot tub kind of person but with the chill, it would have been nice. Also, they are so limited on the pants they sell at any of the Disney stores. They are typically 'sweats' like although they do have one pair of jeans. Unfortunately, they size everything way too big and even their size 2 swims on me. I had no desire to buy overpriced pants that sag in the behind. And my son won't even wear sweats. LUCKILY, we brought jeans and capris. So even when you think it will be warm, it's best to bring at least one long pants/shirt even if it is the item you wear on the plane.

- Tokelau Room 1933 - I think we've had this room before :rotfl: Seriously, we've had 1938 (end room near the Neverland club side) and the end room on the other side near the water and two other times we've been near 1933. We've always been on the non-pool side - odd huh?? Anyway, I was hesitant about another patio room due to the big bug I saw skittering in the closet last time (palmetto bug someone said???). But no bugs this time and the kids were really happy to be in the patio room. They ended up both with Ridemakerz cars (remote control cars you can build and activate in the back of Team Mickey at DTD) and they were out on the walkways with their cars having a blast! Anyway, the room itself was the same old Poly room. Mostly the same pros and cons I've noted before...

Pros - BIG rooms; daybed is a +++ because it provides 3 separate sleeping areas; loved the two chairs/ottoman/table set up to eat at; love the SINGLE sink since it provides more counter space area; all areas are INSIDE the bathroom so no noisy sinks outside the toilet/shower area; large closet spaces and nice food area with fridge (even worked with the door closed :thumbsup2).

NEW Pro - This time, the mattress was so comfortable. I must get all the mattresses right before they switch them out at the Poly but this time, the bed was firm yet soft and comfortable.

Cons - I hate saying this is a CON, but it is a dark if you don't open the blinds and turn on the lights. It doesn't really bother me but after staying at other lightly decorated resorts (BWI, BC, etc), there is a significant difference. BIG CON - NO FAN in the bathroom. Last time, some maintenance guy tried telling us there was a silent fan - HA! Bring matches people :rotfl2: And leave the door open so it doesn't steam up the mirrors for 20 minutes. Another BIG CON - the outlets. Uh, where is the inspector??? The outlets and wiring are old and need serious help. My hair dryer kept turning off the bathroom outlet. And the sparse outlets you can find in the room are scary loose. DH is a contractor and while he didn't come with us this visit, he was concerned when we were there last October. Let's hope the rehab includes electric wiring.

- Kona Island Sushi - YUP, I was able to get the sushi to go!!! AWESOME! We did get a regular cali roll and a luau cali roll which were ok. At least the wasabi woke it up. But the tempura shrimp mango sushi was really good (it could have used a little cream cheesey-ness like another good sushi place does it, but it was still really good).

- Captain Cooks - I like this place for the mickey waffles, grown up grilled cheese and dole whips but I confess those kids chicken nuggets (like all the places that serve the KIDS nuggets) are gross. I would prefer an adult chicken breast nuggets like most of the quick service restaurants but oh well! They did have a new menu item - kids mini mickey waffles! I love the kids meals due to the perfect portion size (even for me, not just the kids) AND the included drink and 2 sides. The mini waffles were crispier than the big waffle but my daughter prefered the mini waffles. They just didn't come with strawberry sauce so I still bought a big one for us to share and she could get the sauce.

- Tambu Lounge - love the drinks but the service is slow. They really should have more bartenders when the place is packed. They had one and then there was another guy...stocking napkins :confused3

- Shopping - Nice selection of merchandise including Poly only merchandise. But I couldn't find my usual hair flowers :(

- Monorail - THIS is the TOP reason we prefer to stay here. We had all but one good experience. When we left MNSSHP, the resort monorail line was jam packed with people. I've never had that issue before leaving MNSSHP and was surprised (I've had the issue when it is a normal night right after the fireworks though!). It took us 4 monorails to get on and we should have taken the boat (bad decision on my part). And they are very careful about the monorails now so there is a LOT of waiting when you are on the monorail. I totally understand and prefer that safety win out but am glad to see that they are going to make some changes to the system to make it quicker and more effective yet keep it safe.

- Parking - they were resurfacing part of the parking lot but there was still plenty of space - and plenty of spots close to the GCH and to Tokelau. No issue with the parking!

Overall - another fabulous Poly stay! We would love to head back. I still wish they would get reasonable 1 BDR villas there. As the kids get older, we prefer that set up. It's difficult to assess because we like the 1 bdr villas but we love the Poly pool, location, and transportation. Well, I guess I will worry about the 'where' after my husband gives the OK for another trip - and he's not giving in - yet ;)

Hello~just paid my final balance for a two night stay at the Poly before my cruise. This is my first stay at the Poly and splurged for CL Lagoon View. I was excited but after reading many reports of dark rooms, lighting, loose sockets in walls, I must say i am a bit nervous and taken back. I sent a request to the Poly IPO today asking if they had a full length mirror on the door in the bathrooms (have stayed at YC and BWI where both do) and I got a one line answer from Nicole that stated Sorry, no mirrors and call if you have other requests. I guess I just felt a bit brushed off.

I really want to get excited about my trip as it is my birthday present to me. I am a huge fan of all things Disney, I just don't want to feel disappointment before I even arrive. Afterall the preplanning to me is as much fun in the excitement that builds before vacay.

Can anyone advise who has stayed in the Hawaii building if there is a mirror on the door or anywhere else I could stand in front of to get ready? I am visually impaired without my glasses, so it helps to have the mirror to see up close.

Thanks so much!:)

Hi
I am here now in CL garden view. My room does have a full length mirror on back of bathroom door! The dark furniture makes it somewhat darker but I love it here! We have stayed at other resorts but this one seems to take you away. Don't think you'll regret it...

Something to remember when deciding on a resort, you never know if you like something until you try it! People who have stayed in the resort many times are sometimes able to see "problems" that other may never notice. And a "problem" to one person is not necessarily a "problem" to someone else. The Poly is an amazing resort with so many positive aspects that I have to look hard to find negative things to say about it. My family takes one big vacation a year and we save to be able to do the things that we like. With that being said, we go back to the Poly every time we stay at Disney. I'm sure there are some things that could be updated, changed, fixed...... but those really aren't the things we notice. You can find problems anywhere you stay. If you want to stay at the Poly, don't second guess yourself based on the opinion of others. Try it for yourself! Lets face it, you will be at Disney in an amazing resort for your birthday. How much better could it get!!! Have a GREAT trip!

Congrats on booking your first Poly stay (and CL)......I wouldn't worry too much as the Poly is an amazing resort :). You won't know if you like it until you try it for yourself. I don't think you will be disappointed ;).

My thoughts exactly :thumbsup2.

Can anyone help me out on this??

I wasn't aware that Samoa was scheduled for Refurb :scratchin I am also staying at the Polynesian in March(2-8) and requested Samoa as well. The only Definite Refurb I am aware of was Hawaii (Jan-Mar). Though I may have missed that annoucement since I was just recently at the Polynesian and not on the Disboards :rotfl2:

Can anyone help me out on this??

I can't answer for sure as I haven't really kept up with the refurb schedule. But I did look at tiki mans site and Samoa is supposed to be done Jan-Mar. My guess is if the work is started on time and at the beginning of Jan, your chances are probably pretty good as it will be about 2/3 of the way done at the beginning of March. Hopefully someone else will have some more insite and can give more detailed information :).

Hi princessap! We're returning to Poly in January and requested Samoa. But Tikiman's site reports that the Samoa refurb is scheduled for January through March. But who knows, so my plan is to keep the Samoa request on our reservation and if it's not available when we arrive, have backup requests in mind to discuss with the CM at the front desk. Looks like Tokelau refurb may be scheduled for March - May, so I think that will be our backup request. I like the central location of Tokelau and it looks like it offers some great garden views. Maybe it will still be available for your dates, since your stay is so early in March.

27 days to our trip and poly stay! Yippee!
Everyone seems to be recommending Samoa or Tokelau. We booked TPV and have requested for Tahiti. I am getting nervous and now really unsure if I am making the right request. I really want this trip to be great! Hmmmmmm..............:confused3

TINKERBELLIE16

Thanks for your mini trip report! :)
So sorry the weather was icky, no swimming for you!
It's funny you mentioned the "guide" who walks/talks to you while you go through the entrance. I'm one of those who likes to stand and drink it all in when I arrive. Don't talk to me! Lol!:rotfl:
Glad to hear that you didn't have any major monorail issues. Were the parks crowded? Did you eat at O'Hana's? Yum!
Welcome home!

I know everyone is always very concerned about choosing a specific longhouse...especially those who are newbies to the Poly and more familiar with the spread out resorts at Values and Mods. Poly is not very spread out. It is quite compact in comparison. Every longhouse is closer/further from different points of interest like pools, GCH and TTC but honestly the walk is minimal anywhere.

Given the uncertainty of the refurb schedule, my advice would be to request the other needs.....such as close to pool, close to TTC, close to GCH, balcony, monorail view, etc. This gives the staff a better understanding of what you need and more rooms in the inventory to choose from. If you request a longhouse that is out of inventory because of refurb or guest capacity, the staff has no insight on why you chose that longhouse. KWIM?

We have stayed in both Aotearoa and Tokelau and loved both locations for different reasons. There is no bad location at the Poly and each longhouse has its own view/location personality that will give you a unique experience. I wouldn't sweat it. Know that if you get to your room and really dislike the view or location, you can walk back to the lobby and ask for a new room. The CMs really do want you to have a magical vacation and will work to accomodate your needs. :thumbsup2

We're requesting Samoa or Tokelau because we booked a garden/standard view and because it is important for us to be relatively close to GCH. Tahiti would definitely be in the running if we booked TPV and were less concerned about proximity to the GCH.

Thanks. Is there a longhouse that has TPV as well as being near to GCH? I am getting greedy :rotfl:

we are going March 4-6 and I requested balcony and Samoa...should I call back and add on other requests? with three young daughters I would like to be close to pool and monorail...

Or should I wait until the ten days before we go (I read somewhere that requests should be done within ten days of arriving but not sure how true this is??)

Thanks. Is there a longhouse that has TPV as well as being near to GCH? I am getting greedy :rotfl:

I've always been a garden view girl at Poly, so I don't have personal experience with TPV. I've read that Aotearoa has both TPV and is close to GCH, but again, I don't have personal experience. Sorry!

Thanks....I requested balcony and then Samoa....should I call back and add other stuff on??

I think graceandcarolinesmom has a good point about describing the factors that are important to you instead of a particular longhouse. I always describe factors when we make a request at BC (full balcony) and BWI CL (boardwalk view) because I can express those preferences in objective terms. For the other resorts in my signature, I don't make any requests. But at Poly, it's more difficult to articulate our requests in objective terms. Our non-longhouse request would be "balcony, close to GCH, nice view." Because "nice view" is subjective, and even "pool view" can mean different things, I request Samoa, balcony, volcano pool side. I know that view is nice and I like it! But if your priorities are "balcony, close to GCH, close to pool," then you could say exactly that - those are all relatively objective terms.

I also agree that at Poly, most rooms are great - both for views and location. Many times, I've just left it to the tiki gods and I've always been happy. We feel like everything is really close, so really no problem walking to the monorail (either TTC or GCH.) We love to walk! The only reason we want to stay close to GCH is that, if not staying CL, we like the proximity to Captain Cook's for refill mugs and breakfast. But it's not a huge issue - nothing is that far away.
