All in one place: Please Post info from your DCL Med excursions HERE

hello I'm a 24 year old going on the 10 day med. cruise 8/8. I have been on many Disney cruises before. Was curious if anyone has any ideas or suggestions for someone my age? Also I'm signed up to do the Mt. Vesuvious Hike, any suggestions on what to weat since i read that it's pretty cold? Also i have been hearing great things about the boats activities the night it's in Villefranche, I'm currently signed up to do the "Evening Casino" Which i feel i'll enjoy, but wanted to know what others thought about the ships nightly activites vs. the casino night, also what is proper attire for an evening in the Casino? I wanted to thank you all for your comments and suggestions.......oh and the perfume factory......should we not waste our money i was really looking forward to that, but it sounds like it's a complete waste of money.

Hi Brier

Just want to tell you wee story okay - we got back from 10 days Med. Cruise last Saturday. We had a fabulous times. Weather was very hot hot in Rome, another place still hot too. I don't think it will be cold in August. I have been told that July/August have a very good weather. About Casino Night - right - my husband always want see it so he brought his dad with him to Evening Casino turned out to BIG VERY DISAPPOINTMENT!! Because the gambles was very EXPENSIVE from start to 10 euros to 1,000 euros!! They decided not to played black jack and went out for a drink - discovered that two pints cost 26 euros:scared1: But they said that they were watching another people's gamble to start off by 500 euros to 3,000 euros:sad2:
So if you want to go to evening casino so prepare with big lump euros?? :scared1: or just looking around. My husband said that lots of people were disappointed when they came back on disney bus to Villefranche.

Oh yes, about prefume factory, we went with private driver and stoped over prefume factory called 'Fragonard' near Eze. I bought two pure prefume and lovely soap. I think you should visit it. enjoyed the view of it. Don't miss Eze too.

Thank you for the information. I love to gamble wth the rest of them, but I agree I don't have that kind of money being a broke grad student. I can go to Vegas to gamble....well sorry your husband didn't enjoy the trip to the Casino. I think i mat cancel that excursion it's going o be along cruise anyway. Thank you again for your insight. Any other suggestions would be highly apprechiated.

Hi there - our day in Villefranche started out to be an "adventure" from my point of view and "ridiculous" according to my DH and DS's ( 18 & 12)

We searched Villefranche to find the bus stop noted on the little map that they have at the Tourisim office right where the tender drops you off. The woman at the desk said just follow the map/directions. It was hot and we could not find any street signs, then finally found a set of stairs that took us to the train platform, but my internet notes suggested the bus. That is bus 100 to Nice then bus 82 or 83? direct to Eze Village. Well, after finally finding the bus stop ( with threats of "one more wrong turn and we are going back to the ship" and "that's it.. we are lost" - ( I pointed out how ridiculous this statement was, as we could see the Magic out in port as we climbed the streets!! :dance3: ) and finally taking bus 100 to Nice (about 15 mins), we then had to wait 1/2 hr + for bus # 112 ( which runs alternately with #82 or 83 )

We were the first ones on the platform waiting for the bus to arrive, but quite a few people ended up pushing their way in front of us and boarded first ( Made my 3 amigos even happier!. - I have a photo of the happy trio in the bus terminal! LOL!) OK - now on to EZE village - @ 25 min ride by bus - which again passes through Villefranche ( this added to their "ridiculous" viewpoint - along with the 30+ min wait!! - What can I say - my family is NOT adventurous and wants to get there the fastest way!!)

Ok - after all that "FUN" we arrived in Eze and climbed up the hill - things started to get better after viewing a beautiful Lamborgini parked by the hotel there - then when we met Horst at "Les Trois Etoiles" in Eze Village - and started sampling the liquors/oils and vinegars.... everyone calmed down and relaxed a little! We LOVED Eze Village - and a visit to Horst is a MUST DO!! He wraps anything you purchase very well and all bottles arrived home safely and are being throughly enjoyed! EZE Village is beautiful. The stores are in the old stone arched buildings - really something to see! If you visit Horst - please tell him Sherri says HI!

After the village we walked back down the hill and it was about 3:15 - and the resturants at the bottom stopped serving lunch at 3pm - so the cafe across the street from the bottom of the hill was still serving pizza which we ate al fresco -very nice.

Horst told us of the "short cut" down to the Fragonard Perfume factory - between the "supermarket" and Chevral Blanc restaurant - and we went there after our lunch. ( I think you can buy already made sandwiches in the supermarket, if that interests you too!)

The tour of the factory was free and the 4 of us had our own guide. It was interesting - We learned what a NOSE is and got to take a little smelling test to see how good our noses were. Then our guide became our own personal sales person, and brought us into the store to make our purchases. There really was no pressure- they were very nice - yes, we did make purchases!!

Ok - we were then done for the day - walked back up our "short cut" ( it actually was) and took a cab back to the ship. - $35 Euro(a BMW!) - 20 mins - NO Complaining = PRICELESS!! ( the whole bus trip for the 4 of us was @ 15 Euro there) - Also the police officer at the bottom of the hill in Eze kindly called a cab for us.

I would suggest - finding out the bus schedule if that is the way you want to go before hand - this way you won't have to wait 1/2 hr at the terminal - we took our time getting off the ship and arrive in VF around 11am - by the time we got bus 100 and to Nice - it was 12 noon and in Eze it was @ 1:15 - as the 12:30 departure from Nice was more like 12:50. The bus is cheaper - but - the taxi is faster.

All in all - everyone agreed that this was a great day - I don't want to say the best on our trip, as all of the ports were different and wonderful in their own way - but we really enjoyed ourselves. I would suggest eating somewhere up in the village if you are there at lunchtime, and others said the enterence fee to the gardens at the top was worth it - I wish we had seen/done that.

Here is the link to the pics from our trip.

We just returned from our cruise in the Med. We did a few excursions and enjoyed them all.

Palermo - We have an 83 yr old cousin in Palermo, actually Casteldaccia which is 30 mins away. We took 2 cabs to her house, they stayed with us and then gave us a tour of Palermo. The whole trip cost 500 Euros.

Naples - We went on the Flavor of Sorrento and the Pompeii tour. This was a great tour. The flavor of Sorrento brought us to a farm where they make fresh mozzerella and had lunch there, YUMMY!! Then off to Pompeii which was extremely hot and alot of walking!!

Sardinia - We choose to take this day off and just went to town with the free bus. It was Sunday so everything was closed, bummer.

Civitavecchia - We did Rome on your own. It was great. We took the bus to Rome and they provided us with maps and let us loose. We walked to the Trevi Fountain and the Collessium. Ate lunch at a outside cafe, then took the train to the Vatican. Took the train to the Spanish Steps and then took the train back to our pick up point. We really enjoyed doing this on our own.

La Spezia - We did the afternoon Pisa tour. This worked out well. Pisa was very interesting and our tour guide who grew up in Pisa enjoyed telling us everything she new about it.

Villefranche - No tour on this one. We took the train to Monaco, a bus to the Grand Casino and walked thru MonteCarlo. The Grand Casino was wonderful. Not much to see since we went during the day, but it was still beautiful. We decided to walk back the train and stopped at an amusement ride called EUROSPLASH. It was a flume ride that we enjoyed since we were so hot from walking.

Marseilles - No tour on this one either. However, we did take the bus to the shopping area. This is the most disgusting town I have ever been to. Every store front was a cafe, but when you walk on the streets there is dog poop everywhere. Have they ever heard of a pooper-scooper. We made this trip just a few hours and we went back to our wonderful ship!!

I hope this helps!!!

My son and I were on the 7/7/7 and I did both the Perfume Factoery excursion and the evening casino. The perfume factory was interesting and it was fun creating our own perfumes/cologne (my son insists we call it that!) and we were able to take our recipe back. We still have another week before it will be ready for prime-time but it should be interesting!! We then took a walking tour of Eze which was fasciinating. It was a different excursion and we liked it!

I am not a big gambler and was pleased to see that they had .5Euro slot machines that actually paid quite well. I played for the entire time and only lost 15 euros and that was becasue I didn't reset the machine (ok I was playing .5E at a time!) and I had four pulls before I noticed it was 4E a pull:scared1: Of course I didn't hit then -- just when I played .5!!!! I enjoyed it just for the ambiance and I liked to watch the others play.

Hello again All!

Thank you for your poast so far. I have another question for everyone. I'm trying to finish my packing for my 8/8/07 1o day cruise. I'm pretty sure what to pack for the cruise itself I have been on Disney Cruises before, now my problme comes when packing for the excursions. I have no idea what to wear around these cities, and stick out like a sore thumb for pick pocketers. I have read post about pick pocketers and luggage stolen probems at the barcelona airport. I'm a little nervous that I have no idea what i'm doing, it's been 12 years since i was last in Europe. I was looking for anyone with safety suggestions for checked luggage and teh excursions. Also what to pack to wear for walking tours, the hike up Mt Vesuvious, and any other suggestions anyone can offer. Thank you again for all your important info you have all provided. PLEASE help me pack! Ha Ha Ha

Oh any one hear about this whole cling wrap thing they do at the airports for international luggage and anyone know the limitations on locks for international luggage I'm flying Delta out of Kansas City, to Atlanta and Atlanta to Barcelona. Thanks

Hi Brier - we (me, DH, DD24, DS23) did the Mt. Vesuvius hike on the 7/7/07 Med cruise. The walk up is quite vigourous so you start out feeling a little chilly and then begin to feel warmer the more you hike. It was very foggy the day we were there so, unfortunately, we couldn't see the crater at all. :guilty: You'd be fine in shorts, t-shirt, and light jacket. The second half of that tour is Pompeii, and it was VERY hot walking around there. At no time during that tour do you need shoulders and knees covered.

We went to Monte Carlo during the day as part of the "Monaco, Monte Carlo, & Eze tour." According to what we read, dressy-casual was required to enter the casino. We even confirmed this with the Excursions desk onboard. Well, the truth is that dressy-causal is required only in the evenings. We were WAY overdressed, and very hot walking around. :sad2: It seemed everyone else on the tour was much smarter, because only one other couple had long pants on. When I asked the tour guide about the dress code, she said men could not enter with flip-flops at all, but we saw two guys in the casino wearing exactly that. So, again, shorts and a t-shirt would be fine for that tour during the day, but you'll need to be dressed up in the evening.

Have a wonderful time!

thank you for all your help. I actually just cancelled my evening casino and booked myself with the rest of my party on that tour of Monaco, Monte Carlo and Eze. I'm sorry it was foggy the day you were in Naples I'm sooooo excited to do this hike up the Mt. to see the crater. I will relay this information to the rest of my group. Oh one more thing did you feel pretty safe on the excursion up the Mt. and Pompeii....my family in not the hiking family so i'm doing it on my own...any suggestions? Thank you again!

Can I just ask what you wore during your excursions? I'm having trouble packing and am worried about sticking out to pick pocketers. Thanks

Did anyone go to Lerici Beach from La Spezia ??

On the 7/18 cruise we signed up for the Lerici castle/dinosaur Disney excursion. You take a tender directly from the boat to Lerici. Once we got there, we quickly decided that we didn't want to hang out with the tour group & would rather explore on our own. We found out from the ferry company at Lerici that there would be 2 boats that day to La Spezia - one at 12:10 PM & one around 6 PM. We took the earlier one & then had lunch in La Spezia, toured around there a bit & took the free Disney tender (goes about every 20 min or so) back to the boat. It was an expensive way to do it (like $90 pp I think to do the Disney excursion), but it saved us time in terms of tendering to La Spezia first, plus the boats to La Spezia from Lerici were so limited, I'm not sure you could do it on your own. Lerici was awesome though - may have been our favorite stop! Cute little town - nice respite from the hectic pace of much of the trip!

Believe me, there are no pickpockets up where your climbing!! :lmao: We did the Mt. and Pompeii tour. It was quite a climb up to the crater. Just pace yourself because the air is thiner and you will get winded pretty easy. Coming down was a bit slippery in spots with the loose gravel so take your time and enjoy the view!! :cloud9:

In Pompeii just stay with your group and you will be fine also. :thumbsup2 Great choice for Villafranch too! The Monaco, Monte Carlo, Eze tour was great!!

For clothes, just basic colors. Pretty much white and black or dark colors seem to be worn by the Europeans. I wore some bright colored shirts at times and felt like I was the only guy with color on in a black and white picture!!

We're considering switching our excursion in Olbia to the ravioli-making one, based on the enthusiastic reports about it in this thread. We're wondering, though, what the ravioli end up filled with. Our DSs (8 and 4) both love cheese-filled ravioli, but we don't eat meat and the older boy in particular would be really grossed out if he had to handle any. Thanks for any info you can share on this subject.

Also wondering if anyone can report on the following excursions:

Erice and Segesta (Palermo)
Etruscan Treasures (Civitavecchia)
Hidden Treasures of Herculaneum (Naples)
Lerici's Castle and Dinosaurs (La Spezia)

We're signed up for all of them and haven't seen much (or any, in some cases) discussion of them.

Thanks!

Sent you a private message on Etruscan Treasures. Not sure I did it correctly. If you did not get it, please let me know, and I will try again.

We did a couple of tours through Claudio at:
http://www.limoinrome.com/home.htm

At Naples we had a private tour at Pompeii, and visited the Amalfi Coast - Sorrento and Positano. We had breakfast at a restaurant high above Positano. Our driver was Aaron and our tourguide at Pompeii was Veronica. Both were good, but I have to say that Veronica was outstanding. If you are going to use Claudio's company, be sure to ask for her as a tourguide at Pompeii.

We also used him in Rome, and again had excellent service. Since there were 10 of us, Emmi was our guide for the day and we had a private tour of the Vatican and the Coliseum, bypassing the long lines.

I highly recommend this service if you haven't booked yet for the August sailing.

We did this excursion and really enjoyed it. It is interesting because Herculaneum, while it appears to be a rural area, is right in the city with houses around it. You get off the bus and walk about 7 or 8 blocks to the site and then down a fairly gentle hill to get into it. We did not walk through the entire site but did see a good bit of it. Our guide was good and it was an enjoyable 1/2 day. It is not as big as Pompeii but is very well preserved and was apparently a more wealthy city then Pompeii. I'd recommend this trip if you want to see some ruins but don't want to take a long bus ride. We spent probably 3 hours walking through the site. Stopped at the cameo factory on the way back.

It was very hot when we were there in July. Do the morning tour if you have a choice. Have fun - we had a great time! :dance3:

Can I just ask what you wore during your excursions? I'm having trouble packing and am worried about sticking out to pick pocketers. Thanks

Brier

Wear comfortable clothes. Unless you are avoiding all shore excursions and tourist sites, you will stick out to pick-pocketers no matter what. Your camera, water bottle, and tour guide will mark you as a tourist no matter what.

We didn't wear anything Disney or chunky tennis shoes with white socks to avoid looking "too American." We did a lot of touring on our own. Keep your money in your front pocket or in a hidden purse-like thing around your neck, under your clothes (although this made us blazing hot & we decided to just carry the cash in the front pockets after a few days).
