Advice needed - Universal on Saturday, Jan 3?

I'm looking for advice on how to spend our time this weekend (Jan 3/4 - Sat/Sun). We arrive in Anaheim on Friday evening . We are staying until Jan 12 and have 5 day hoppers for DL/DCA. We thought that we'd use our days starting January 5. Therefore, we're trying to figure out how to best spend our time on the weekend.

Will Universal Studios be crazy busy this weekend? Alternatively, we were also debating about whether we should use one of these days to drive down to San Diego and go to zoo. Another consideration was a whale watching tour and time at the beach (we are coming from Canada where currently it feels like -40 degrees Celsius brrrr!).

Or will most places be very crowded? Maybe we should just go for a day on the weekend to DL or DCA and make the best of it. Maybe not as bad as we fear? Lol

Most places will still be a bit crowded. Not as crowded as the weekend of Dec 26-30 but more crowded than the weekend of Jan 5-8.

Universal won't be crazy busy but all the "Grinchmas" stuff will still be there. Should be nice.

The beaches will be quite empty. We Californians don't do well in this weather.

Thanks for the insight. We didn't want to burn a day at Disney since we have the option to go during the week or following weekend. Just trying to find somewhere that the crowds might be more manageable
