50 Shades of Gray.. am I the only one?

Not getting the hype either. I had to really force myself to finish book 1, not even going to bother reading parts 2 or 3.

I could only make it through about the first 20 pages in the first book. :rotfl:The writing was so awful, I couldn't take it anymore and had to stop. :scared:

I am very very close to the beginning of the book and already think the writing is horrible and the main girl is annoying. I was so irritated with her during the interview at the beginning of the book. He answered the questions honestly and appropriately and her character keeps thinking "Holy crap he's arrogant!!!" But, I hadn't seen him do anything arrogant. Maybe his character IS arrogant, but if he is, the writer certainly didn't convey it during the interview scene, so the girl just ended up seeming very dumb and I was completely confused by her irritation with him.

When I heard it was a fanfiction based on a series that read like bad fanfiction to me to begin with (Twilight), I knew it wasn't for me.

really thought it was only me... The ladies I work with are just crazy over this book. I thought there was something wrong with me :worried:

I was getting angry the more I was reading... the girl is just dumb and the guy is so controlling and disgusting! Not exactly romantic :rolleyes2

I have less than no interest. I've heard these book are written like poor fan fiction, complete with writing and grammar mistakes. I tend to stick with authors who can write better than I can.

I can't bring myself to read it. I've read an excerpt I found online, and just no. Perhaps I'm unfairly judging it by that one excerpt, but it read very immature teen voice to me. I'm not a fan of that type of writing to begin with, and when it's in erotica, well, I'm not okay with that.

I was feeling the same way when I was reading the first book. I forced myself to read the second and really looked forward to reading the last one.

I agree, it is not the most well written book, but I wasn't expecting it to be either. I felt the story got better as read on.

This last line made me laugh.

I so agree.

I've said it before, this book is just awful and if women want to really read some kind of erotica, do the research and you'll find stories much better written and portrayed. I couldn't make it past page 12 but skimmed here and there to see what the fuss was. Just horrible. And a character that constantly says "holy crap" ? Oh please. Is she 12???

And the phrase mommy porn makes me want to punch something.

I agree. I don't understand the fuss. In my opinion, it is not well written. The only thing I can think that sets this book apart is the erotic elements.

It makes me sad. There are those of us who write and cannot get published. We've done all the right things. We've spent hours and hours reading about the writing process. We've gone to tons of meetings to have our work critiqued so that we can make it better. We've read tons of good work so that we know the difference. And yet, we just can't get there. It wouldn't be so bad if I thought that publishers were even taking the time to read my work. I don't think they do. Unsolicited manuscripts tend to go into the slush pile. Yet, getting an agent is becoming very difficult. There are just so many people trying to get published.

I'm lucky in that I entered a contest and one of my picture books will finally be published. If not for the contest, I'd be out of luck.

I'm not sure how she managed it. Sometimes, it's all about who you know.

Sour grapes? You bet!

I agree it's about content (even though it's terribly written). There are a lot of repressed women in this country.

Oh thank goodness I am not the only one. I really do not like this book at all. It is not well written and its just not my type of book. I don't think I will read the other two.

I would never pay money for something that was previously available for free. Yeah its been slightly edited and the names have been changed, but its still the same Twilight fan fiction story she posted online for FREE. I think its ridiculous all these people are paying for it when a simple search online will bring up the Twilight fan fiction (called Master of the Universe) fanfiction story.

I thought, before this thread, that I might read it if only to see what all the fuss was about. Then I saw this thread, and googled "50 Shades of Grey excerpt", and found a blog with excerpts (and some amusing commentary), and burst out laughing a few times. The main character and the writing were so juvenile. I don't think I can read a book where I want to make corrections in red and send it back to the writer.
