Pre trip report... Forgive me...this is my first

WHO: Jenn (me) and Sabrina (bff)
WHEN: Jan 8-11
WHERE: Animal Kingdom Lodge-Club Level
WHY: My 35th birthday girls weekend, first time away from the kids and WHY NOT!
HOW: Lord only knows! Lol! I'm not sure how we'll get from point A to B without the whining, crying, tantrum, I'm hungry, hot, tired no I'm not tired....in our ears! What will we do without our 4 and 5yo DDs and 2 yo DSs....oh I'm sure we'll figure it out! So come along and let's see what kind of trouble we get into! I promised my husband I wouldn't get banned from WDW because if I do, he'll go without me!

Our itinerary is as follows: I have an AP (DVC member) and Sabrina has a 2 day park hopper

Friday Jan 8: Arrive at MCO approx 10:30, hop the DME to AKL-CL. The afternoon is open (looking like rain :( ) so what will we get into?.... It will likely start with a welcome mimosa in the lounge but we shall see where it goes from there?

Saturday Jan 9: EMH AK, then to Epcot (maybe a few drinks around the world). MK FP: 7DMT, BTM, SpaceMt. Definitely plan to hit splash mountain as I read it closes for refurb.

Sunday Jan 10: EMH HS, then to MK, afternoon is free, hope to see fantasmic and jet to EPCOT for ADR. Will we make it?

Monday Jan 11: sleep in, lounge breakfast, check out

ADRs: Friday: California Grill at 7:20pm (hoping for a spectacular view of wishes)
Saturday: Grand Floridian Cafe at 6:15pm
Sunday: Via Napoli at 8:30pm (first time, looking forward to this)

Wish list:
Trader Sams
Drink around the world
Resort monorail crawl (walk....I mean walk...crawling will surely get me expelled! Lol)

MIGHT I PREFACE THIS BY SAYING NEITHER ONE OF US ARE BIG DRINKERS! Lol

I can't believe this is happening! The trip to the airport was uneventful and security was a breeze despite my huge over packed carry-on! Sabrina's flight was on time and she's on her way! I will be boarding soon! Much to my surprise my husband upgraded me to first class to start an awesome weekend! I hope to post pics soon!

The flight was good. Lots of leg room, snacks and two completed crosswords with a little snoozing here and there as well. The captain mentioned overcast skies and light drizzle in Orlando but that's not going to get this girl down! I'm looking forward to seeing Sabrina! Believe it or not, this is only the third time seeing each other in person!

Let me take a moment to introduce the cast of characters. I'm a physician assistant currently working as a stay at home mom and Sabrina is a dental hygienist. We met just over three years ago on a cruise (not DCL but RCI-oasis of the seas.) She and her husband were cruising with a toddler for the first time as were DH and I. I noticed the look in her eyes immediately like, "what was I thinking?" Cruising or vacationing as we knew it will never be the same (well until this weekend ). After some small talk at the kiddie pool and running into each other here and there, DH and I invited them to dine with us. I think knowing how each other felt traveling with a toddler was a nice distraction for both families to enjoy a meal. We hit it off immediately as our lives paralleled in more ways than one. We pretty much remained penpals with the occasional FaceTime until this past April when we met up at no less than WDW (not planned mind you!) This was the first time seeing each other since the cruise over two and a half years earlier! The second time was over the summer when she and her DD came to stay with us at our Lakehouse in upstate NY.

The excitement of catching up, enjoying adult time and being at the most magical place on earth is building up as we are now descending (and my left eardrum is about to rupture because my gum is in my purse which is in the overhead that I didn't grab when I wanted to get up to use the restroom after two cups of coffee and a bottle of water...ahhh) sorry I digress...we are now approaching MCO!! Woot woot! Disney here we come...

Seeing each other was great so we weren't bothered at all by the long DME ride. The bus driver said the trip was about 75 minutes, which I thought was longer than usual, but we had lots to talk about. We stopped at AoA, pop and then AKL. I had already checked in online and received a text at 10:23 that room #4213 was ready! I didn't want Sabrina to miss the club level experience so a CM with her iPad escorted us to the lounge. We were immediately offered a beverage which was sangria. Janet at the desk was great at making us feel right at home. Sadly, our awaiting room was a queen and a bunk bed so we changed that hoping a family would get their request. Sabrina saw Janet write down our assigned room so we were able to scope things out. Our new room # 4437 was close to the elevators, not far from the lobby but was not ready until 2:50!

No worries, because in the meantime we toured the grounds, checked out the animals, snacked and chatted by the pool with an adult beverage in hand!

What a great start to our girls weekend! Up next appetizers in the lounge and ADRs at California Grill at 7:20.

After a relaxing afternoon we got freshened up for dinner and headed to the CL lounge for apps and wine! How exciting to actually get "dressed up" for an adult dinner. We got to the lounge about 5:45 and it wasn't busy at all. On the menu was lamb stew and a turkey curry.

Both very good but we were feeling a bit tired and dehydrated from our travels so we skipped the wine and hopped the bus for MK. We literally walked directly to the bus stop as the bus was pulling up! It wasn't crowded and it was a very brief (less than 15 mins) ride to MK. It wasn't raining so we walked to the CR and checked in at the podium on the second floor. I had already put a request in for a fabulous table but after a few minutes of waiting "wow" the request delivered! What a great table!
image.jpeg
I didn't think I had a pic and sorry about the glare, but I wanted you to see we were on the window! Pictures do not do this view justice!

Still feeling a little dehydrated we skipped the wine menu (clearly you can see now we are not big drinkers but hey it sounded fun) and we shared the BLT flatbread. It was amazing! Dinner was served just as wishes was about to start! We both ordered the filet and we were not disappointed!

image.jpeg
What a perfect birthday dinner! Stuffed to the gills we still opted to share the butterscotch creme brûlée! My birthday dessert said congratulations, but hey, it was complimentary and yum-o!
image.jpeg

Barely able to roll out of there, we said heck with the bus and grabbed a taxi back to AKL. A quick trip for about $25 was well worth it! Hooray we were home again, in our pjs and off to sleep for a good nights rest! Up tomorrow, alarms set for 6:45, a CL breakfast and EMH at AKL.

Wow! What a cool story about how you two met!

I finally figured out how to attach pics! I'm also forgetting a few details! Upon entering our room Friday afternoon I had a cute birthday bag of goodies from AKL. It had chocolates, a wooden giraffe mask ornament and of course my birthday button! After returning from dinner that night, a beautifully wrapped box of wine from Disney floral and gifts... Well, I'm assuming (I never unwrapped it) it's Chardonnay because that generally what I enjoy, but this trip I was definitely a disequilibrium lightweight! Maybe that's a good thing? Idk, you'll have to keep reading!

So the alarms went off, but we did exactly what any mother who had the chance to sleep in without being awoken at the crack of dawn would do....we ignored it! Lol! Not for long though, we were up and in the lounge by 7:45. Breakfast is my favorite offering at AKL-CL. I always get a croissant (it's my vacation guilty pleasure), lots of fresh fruit (raspberries or blueberries, pineapple and strawberries) along with a bowl of hot quinoa, with milk and berries! Delicious. Oh, and of course coffee
image.jpeg

image.jpeg
We knew we had a short trip to AK so we moseyed to the bus stop and headed to EMH. First up, Kilimanjaro safari. We walked right on and the animals were front and center. This was the first time I saw the hyenas and the lions were like statues!

I love that ride! A quick detour to Starbucks and over to Its tough to be a bug! I didn't remember that attraction being so fun! Maybe because my kids hate it and I haven't been in a while. Things were going great, just doing as we pleased, so after watching the baby gorilla entertain us for a while (** I have a cute pic which isn't uploading so I'll try later**)we were ready for Expedition Everest! Go figure, it was down! It was still early and not busy so we decided to stay and check out Dino land. This was Sabrina's first time at AK and she was very excited to see the sights and learn the ropes for when she returns with her family. We rode Dinosaur (my first time, because my kids would most definitely be too scared) and then headed back to Asia to wait in line for 50 mins for expedition Everest! Ugh....what did we do before FP! It was very fun, even though the two children behind us riding alone literally looked like they disappeared! They were so cute and if you could've seen their faces when it was dark or when you see the yeti....so cute! I guess you can't help but be motherly even when your kids are at home! What a great morning, but we were ready to head back and nap by the pool! Speaking of napping....we were exhausted and feeling nauseous, had used the restroom what seemed like every few minutes and not wanting to drink alcohol.....something was wrong? Oh no! Could I be pregnant?.. This couldn't be possible, or could it?

Oh the bus! The motion sickness machine! I forgot how much I hate these things! We live in VA and drive to the World because my husband hates them too... so it's been a few trips since I've had to go farther than AKL to AK and this is only at the request of my DD! "It's ok, I thought, it's our shortest trip," but poor Sabrina! She felt sick too! We made it though! A brief regrouping at the bus stop benches and maybe the shrubs :crazy2: and we were off to the gift shop for Dramamine and possibly a pregnancy test! Nope, they don't carry them! I was surprised by this! Well it turns out.... NO! Or at least I think? But chances are I'm not! Sabrina was sick too! Oh well, at this point I was feeling better. We headed to the 6th floor for some salty snacks and jungle juice then down to the pool for a little rest and relaxation! It was mid 70s so a nice nap was just what we needed! It was a bit cool in the shade as we witnessed a rescue from the lifeguard! Yep, you heard right! Whistles blew and in he went! Poor guy, it looked chilly, at least to a sane adult! Luckily the little girl, maybe 4-5yr at best, could swim but appeared to have tiptoed just far enough to be bobbing! Great catch by the lifeguards, but the worse part was the parent! Would you believe she stood at the zero entry end, hands on hips just staring, no reaction. No thank you, I'm sorry, no talking to the child, just shuffled back to her table with her back to her children as the lifeguards continued to ask the girls (there were two...twins!) to stop running and walking along the ledge by the bridge at the Uzima pool! Sorry, maybe they did have their eyes on their children but whoa, it made it hard to close my eyes and relax. It was a bit comical at times, as we named them the little Dennis the menace twins. That was enough excitement and we were starting to get more shaded so we moved seats and soaked up some rays for another hour! We had thought about heading to Epcot, but there was always tomorrow!

After soaking up some Vitamin D and recouping in the Florida sun, we ventured back to the room to get ready for ADRs at Grand Floridian Cafe at 6:15. An early dinner encouraged us to skip the lounge and board the bus to Epcot, to catch the monorail to TTC, and over to the GF. It was suppose to rain and it was getting dark so we packed the ponchos and umbrella for a fun night at MK! We were still staying hopeful that wishes wouldn't get rained out. FP were set for 7:05-8:05 BTM, 8:20-9:20 7DMT and 9:50-10:50 space mountain! The transfer seemed longer than usual with stops and the monorail being extra packed because it was now pouring, but we made it to the GF on time and didn't wait long to be seated. We had a cozy table for two by the window in the far back dining room. I love this place! The food is great and extremely reasonable! Sabrina and I knew what we wanted to order and we had excellent service! Much better than the night before at the Cali Grill! The food and ambience were superb but we got the impression that our server was perturbed that we didn't double our bill with 2 glasses of wine each and an after dinner beverage. Maybe it's just us? Ok, back to the Grand Floridian Cafe, we split the autumn heirloom apple salad and Caramelized onion soup gratinee. This was the first time Sabrina tried "French onion" soup! Crazy, eh?! For dinner, Sabrina ordered the ravioli (no longer on the menu as I'm looking up the correct name!! What? It was amazing) and shrimp and grits for me! Both, perfect! Sorry no pics, darn! Last but not least, a dessert of chocolate fondue (can't help but start signing :music:Frozen when I say that) and a birthday cupcake! Delicious!

image.jpeg
The rain had subsided so we were off to hit the pavement in MK! Up first, big thunder mountain, it's now a steady drizzle so we decided to put our ponchos on. We were in the last car and screaming in hysterics! What a blast!! MK in the rain with no children.....we never laughed so hard!
image.jpeg
On to my favorite ride, splash mountain! If I wasn't getting soaked enough already...we were front row, after a steady rain... Oh boy, water rushed the seat and soaked my pants! I knew it was coming too! Luckily for Sabrina, I absorbed the water which was intended to soak her! And I was wearing the thicker poncho! We had the first car on the 7DMT and then decided to sing our way through the little mermaid before heading to main street for the fireworks. It wasn't too busy and nothing beats that show! Tears in our eyes and signing Disney songs, it really doesn't get any better than that! So magical!
image.jpeg
Is it just me or is it new that the descending ticker bell is a CM?! Maybe I'm delusional, but I thought it was just a special effect before? Last, but not least, space mountain. It's a good thing this was our last FP, because Sabrina about tossed her cookies (or chocolate fondue)! We walked through the emporium before calling it a fun night at MK! The wait for the bus wasn't long but I couldn't help but over hear the two twenty-somethings that were on the boardwalk earlier say that they were on their fourth bus after a ferry trying to get back to AKL! Oh boy!!! Just think, that could've been us, but thankfully we've been vertiginously off kilter the past few days! Alarms are set for 6:30, as we must get to HS for EMH on time!

Thank goodness for the snooze button! Whose idea was it to get up at 6:30 anyhow? Partly mine, I'm sure. It didn't take long to get up and around and have our usual club level breakfast. It was a bit cooler today but at least it wasn't raining! There wasn't too long of a wait at the bus stop, but oh yea, it's marathon weekend! This was the first time we really felt the effect of the race and detours. Truly not that bad though. We were to the gates by 8:30 cheering on marathoners as we walked by! Sabrina was "randomly" selected to be scanned by the metal detectors. I'm sure you are all well aware of this, but if your not, it's Disney extra measure of precaution because some bozo decided to bring a gun to our happy place! How dare he?! Idiot! I forgot to mention that I was randomly selected at AK yesterday! If you haven't frequented a park during a marathon, it is strategically roped off. One might ask "how does a chicken cross the road during a marathon?" Simple, you're corralled like cattle as they shift the route allowing both directions to cross without interrupting a thing.....except for when you decide you want Starbucks which is right there, but you have to go all the way around and you forget you need a certain souvenir and then you need to go all the way back, but to exit it's all the way around again! My sequence may be backwards, but we were back and forth a few times any how! Hey, it's Disney, how irritated can you possibly get? We only had two things on the brain, Rock n Rollercoaster and ToT! Simple! RnR first...just a 20 min wait, but didn't feel much more than 10 minutes. I was handed one of those plastic cards on a lanyard by the CM at the entry. I guess I should've asked?! And a "13" minute wait for ToT, which felt less than 5! Thank goodness for EMH. I love both those rides but that's all she wrote for Hollywood Studios! As previously mentioned, Starbucks and a few souvenirs and we were off to MK! Oh, has anyone staying at a resort ever used the souvenir resort delivery service? I wasn't expecting them to tell us 2 days! I assumed by that evening! Oh well, we were leaving in the morning, so that wasn't an option. Off to MK on the longest bus ride yet! Ugh!
image.jpeg
As you are all well aware at this point, the buses and us, don't mix! It was uneventful though so that's a plus! We had our FP set for Pirates of the Caribbean, jungle cruise and Peter pan. There was a 40-70 minute wait on all three, so we chose well. We also visited the Haunted Mansion, Mickey's PhilharMagic, the Hall of Presidents, country bears jamboree, watched the afternoon parade and did some more shopping on our last day.
image.jpeg image.jpeg

Sabrina and I bought matching sweatshirts "aw" and checked off the items that the children at home requested! Lucky ducks! Maybe because we were feeling a tiny bit guilty that we were there without them, but that passed quickly! We were on the bus back to the room to relax a bit before heading to Epcot on our last night.

I am amazed at what you 'can't' buy at Disney. I forgot to pack finger nail clippers 2 years ago during one of our trips. I don't know if it changed but we couldn't buy them anywhere. We tried the BWV gift shops (both), the emporium at MK, Mouse Gears at Epcot, every store we could find at DTD (just to name some). Everyone said they don't carry them.
Glad to hear a good review for the GF cafe. We are going to try it this spring.

Thanks for reading along! I'm slowing down and realizing I'm not that exciting! Lol. You will love GF cafe!

I wish I could say the bus ride back to the resort was uneventful, but to spare you the details, the greenery by the Kidani bus stop trash can will be much greener this coming spring! A little fresh air walking from Kidani to Jambo house did just the trick but we decided to head back to the room and get ready to go to Epcot early. We had ADRs at Via Napoli, which I was greatly anticipating! In fact, the only thing I wanted to eat the entire trip was tiramisu. I read a cute TR of a mother daughter team who ordered tiramisu as an appetizer! What a great idea! While back at the room to warm up and clean up we noticed the keepers out with the animals. I feel like I saw a few new animals on the Savannah this trip, but I could be wrong?! Maybe a few warthogs? And these puffin/duck/penguin looking birds?

Ok, so out on the balcony, our neighbors were SMOKING!!! Oh my gosh, I was so annoyed! I think it was the neighbors to the left since there was no balcony to the right as we were on the end, but grrr! It could've been below, idk, but we were so mad! So mad I did nothing! I should've called the desk! I mean what do you do!? I've read the front desk, isn't the front desk, but rather a call center. Should I have called the concierge line? It just irks me (apparently not enough, because once again..I did nothing). Oh and their conversation....oi....let's just say their favorite restaurant is Cape May! Shout out to Cape Mays. Lol. I've never been there, but maybe I will try it now....I'll give you the PG version, "it's their jam!" So that was enough balcony entertainment for us. We decided to head up to lounge for a quick bite since our ADRs weren't until 8:30. The lounge was packed! There was literally standing room only! We actually pulled up two chairs by the elevator. The lounge offering were great tonight! The soup and hot apps were so good. Note to self, write down everything and take pics if you're trying to write your first TR! I apologize!

I'm a huge fan of AKL-CL! I love the ambience, food, staff, etc. There seems to be much debate (at least in our house) if CL is worth it and I say yes! We never buy a dining plan, but to have water, beer, wine, juice, fruit, yogurt, snacks available especially with toddlers, is worth it to me. The 5-7pm offerings followed by dessert is a meal to me, and I can eat!! I think you should try it at least once. Luckily, as owners at AKV we have the ability to stay CL when we want and except for our first trip, which was 4 months out, we've always been able to book at 11 months. This trip, on the other hand was booked while driving home November 8, so it was not on points....eek!

It was definitely chillier at this point, so warm soup hit the spot. The bus ride was quick and we made it through security quickly despite the terrible jokes from the not so funny security officer. Darn, I wish I could remember his joke about Gaston! First stop was Nemo and friends. After that we watched the Dolphins, the Sharks, and then over to living the land. Normally, I would've been sad that we just missed Soarin' before refurb, but it's safe to say, we might have been "those" people! I can't imagine if we tossed our lunch on that! I'm not sure when I turned into such a wuss!
image.jpeg
Brr it was chilly!
image.jpeg
It was 58 degrees chilly? Not cold for winter, but in Florida...brr. We decided to warm up by walking around the world and check in early for dinner. Well, half way around if your are familiar where Italy is. We didn't wait long to be seated and dinner was better than I expected. We shared the mozzarella caprese and the carciofi pizza. Omg delish! My absolute favorite pizza at our local spot is a white pizza with spinach and artichoke, but this was a million times better! I was sold and stuffed! Uncomfortably stuffed as we managed to eat all but two slices, but I couldn't bring myself to throw it away, so I insisted i'd at least try to eat a few bites for breakfast! I also tried giving it to a few CMs who were interested, but sadly declined due to rules. Before tonight I had never seen illuminations and assumed we would miss it given our 8:30 reservation, but look what we saw as we were walking out with tiramisu to go!
image.jpeg
Wow! It was gorgeous! I definitely plan to watch it in its entirety someday with an adult beverage in hand! DH and I will be there in April for sure! Holy cow, the boards were right! It was a mob trying to get out of there, but we managed to squeeze onto the bus and get home in one piece! It was kind of cozy being at Disney in the cold! The room was hot and we were enjoying the time while sadly packing our bags :( Flights were 1:20 and 2:30 so we'll be on the 10:35 DME! One last childless night to be able to sleep in.

Wow! I'm sorry it's been so long since writing last! I hope you all have enjoyed reading my first trip report. I definitely know what I can do better the next time. At any rate, it was fun and I hope you all thought so too. Now let's finish this thing up!

Departure day.... On our last morning waking up at at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge, we had no plans. We were pretty much all packed and no alarms had been set the night before. I decided I had to check my bag downstairs due to all the gifts that I bought this weekend! After going down and back twice because I left my ID in the room, I was now ready to roll! There was just absolutely no way it was all going to fit in my carry-on size suitcase! Tip, always bring a bigger suitcase to Disney! With plenty of time to spare, we made our last trip to the Kilimanjaro club lounge. I needed one, maybe two, croissants and a warm bowl of quinoa with fruit before heading north! It just doesn't taste the same when I make it! With coffee in hand, we were free to just sit and reflect on our greatly needed weekend away! We both were feeling blessed to have had this chance to relax and reward ourselves for the hard work we do as mothers, wives, and daughters! By 10:15 we were heading back to room 4437 to say goodbye and grab our things. The wait for Magic express was brief in the brisk 42 degree Florida sun. Two more stops and we were on our way. Sabrina's Dramamine kicked in quickly and we both caught a little nap on the way to MCO. In the meantime, I ignored a call I was getting on the way there.....as it turned out, it was from the airline letting me know that my flight was delayed an hour! This wasn't terrible but I was ready to get home. Pulling off the MCO exit the bus driver announced there was a gator sunning on the bank, but it was too late...I missed it! I've yet to see one of those critters! Maybe that's a good thing! Have you all seen or read the trip reports of a snake in the shower or a flying squirrel in the toilet?! I would literally die! I love Disney too much! Parting ways with Sabrina was sad, but we'll be seeing each other soon I know! I wish we had planned to stick together until our flights, but it's was easy to pass the time at the airport with all the shops and eateries. I also wish I had bought something from the Harry Potter store, but I'll save those souvenirs for when I finally get to visit Diagon Alley. I read a thread here that there a bus trip some DISers set up to Universal....I bet that was a blast! A little more time at the Disney store before deciding to tackle the security line! Whoa! It was packed. I was flying first class home, which allows for priority screening but that was no help! Oh well, I still had a lot of time to kill. I think my terminal was A, or maybe B, but regardless, I made it to a comfy chair in the sun with an iced coffee and an egg and cheese croissant (hey, I'm still on vacay)! I called my husband, my mom and checked in with Sabrina when lo and behold I got an email subject: Disney?! It was from my dear friend Leanna! We went to college together and she now lives in SC. She was at Disney and swore she saw me on Main Street watching the parade Sunday! Omg!!! Yes, it was me! She said she was trying to get my attention, but her husband insisted it wasn't me! Aw! So sad I missed them! I hadn't seen her since my wedding in 2007! Regardless, it was so fun to know that we were there at the same time and we promised to stay in touch and get together soon! We discussed a girls weekend at our lake house, but I'm thinking another Disney weekend would be a blast! As you may remember, it was marathon weekend, so there was a ton of happy and likely sore, marathoners sporting their runDisney apparel and decorated metals. After coming down from "my omg I can't believe I almost ran into one of my BFFs from college" high, I started a conversation with a gentleman congratulating his success in the half marathon. He explained how he had just started running and was hooked....he encouraged that I start running after I expressed my desire to one day partake in the Disney running fun!! So....I've decided I'm going to do it! I'm going to sign up for the Wine & Dine Half marathon in November! I'm so excited and already started training! I think Sabrina may run too and we've started discussing our trip! Tentatively, a 2-bedroom at the Grand! So much to look forward to next fall, but in the meantime, I've got April 17-24 booked as a split stay between AKV and PBV to look forward too! Oh and a whole lot of training!!
Thanks again for reading my rambling babble! Until next time :wave2:

I can't wait....56 more days until we check in to AKV April 17-20, then to PBV 20-24! FP and ADRs are set!
Yak and Yeti
Boathouse
Via Napoli
CRT
GFC

Kona
I wish Sabrina and her family were joining us, but she's set to sail RCI-oasis, the first week of April for her 35 birthday! Her first time back since we met 2012!
